Default My brother is looking at this 1999 Dodge Durango. How bad is this rust?

It's a black 5.9L 140,000mi example.
Yeah, I know
I've tried talking him out of it but he really wants it.
The body is in good shape, it drives fine, no smoke/weird noises/transmission oddities. While I was giving it a once over I had a look underneath it and most of the undercarriage is clean with only surface rust, this part was so rusted it was crumbling:

It was directly under the running boards, so I'm thinking that it's just them crapping out, and isn't a problem with the actual frame, but I wanted to be sure.
Having never owned a truck or body-on-frame vehicle I couldn't tell if this rust was on a structural part of the frame or if it was just the running boards crapping out. What do you think?

Rotten rocker panels definately. Looks like the exhaust system might be on it's way out also. I wouldn't buy a durango either way... but if he is set on one, and the price is right ($2k-), sure why not.

Please keep trying for his sake. Those things are piles of steaming poo. ESPECIALLY with that many miles. Crap. Junk. Feculent mounds of rancid elephant feces.

Really. if you like your brother, convince him to seek something else.

Complain to your mother that she shouldn't have been drinking when she was pregnant with your brother.

I've tried so much that I've given up. The thing is going to kill him on gas.
Would the crappy rocker panels make it unsafe to drive, or is it just stupid and ugly?
I know they have some of the worst transmissions ever made, but it seems to be working pretty well.
They're asking $5k, but I think $3500 would be fair.

keep linking him viable alternatives from craigslist or something.

"look at this lovely toyota tacoma! it's RED! and if it's FUBARed with rust, they might buy it back! unlike those ******** at dodge."

then link him that top gear segment where they try destroy it.

WTF is wrong with him? Why is he so hell bent on that vehicle. Even if it was in better condition, and even if they weren't known for crappy trannys, and even if gas wasn't $4+ a gallon, it would still be a horrible buy.

Have you brother read this thread.

To the brother: Please, man, swallow your pride, save your money, and please reconsider. Trust us, you will be happier NOT buying such a piece of junk. You can spend your hard-earned cash on something much better. There are not many vehicles on the road worse than a Durango.

Edit: If you buy it, your brother has the right to call you a nitwit, dumbass, polesmoker, choad-boy, etc., for the rest of your natural life.

Rust never sleeps, you know. Om nom nom.

My friend had a Durango. I think I'd hit the character limit talking about all the crap that was wrong with it. I felt sorry for the steel molecules that were a part of that thing.

Dodge has something like 114 day supply of those things on the lot, he might be able to get a new one for a good hummer.

Even the brand new Durango is a steaming pile of pooh. If he's your brother you will NOT let him get this.

That vehicle is the worst potential automotive purchase I've seen in recent memory.
The rust is terrible, those trucks are junk, and gas is passing $4 per gallon.
There are eleventy million cars that would be better to buy at this point.

I would honestly rather ride a bicycle than buy that... My buddy had one back when gas was $ 1.80 a gallon and bitched about gas mileage then. He would be lucky to get 10-11mpg going downhill

If he's gonna make a bad purchase at least encourage him to get something useful like a pickup.

But I'd certainly spend ~$3K on a decently maintained Toyota than a Durango. The engineering and durability is just ... better.

You tried now let him buy it and wait for the exhaust to fall off or for him to Flintstone the floorboard. Just be sure to be with him when he fills up for the first time.
