Short block warranty is whichever is greater of the following:

Remainder of factory 5 year, 60,000 powertrain warranty
3 years or 36,000 miles
1 year unlimited mileage.

The warranty for your repair has expired on all 3 counts

Problem And Likely Cause: Chirping throw-out bearing (TSB), unacceptable rattle behind headunit, broken rear cupholder

Modifications: None

Submitted For Warranty Work (Yes/No): No

Reason Given For Denial: Despite TSB, dealer claims noise is not indicative of a problem with the throw-out bearing and will not replace it under warranty. Dealer says diagnostic for rattling noise behind headunit will be $100 and didn't give me a warm fuzzy anything would be covered under warranty, even if they found and fixed the issue. They gave me a price to fix the rear cupholder and never mentioned or offered to pay for it under warranty.

Your Story: This is mainly about the throw-out bearing. Bought the car used with about 25k miles. About a week after I got the car, I started hearing a chirping sound coming from underneath the car. I actually heard it while I was going through a drive-through as the sound was bouncing off the building and being amplified. I actually pulled over in the parking lot to figure out where it was coming from and discovered it was the throw-out bearing after I found pressing on the clutch pedal stopped the noise. Did some searching online and found the threads and TSB about it. I took a few vids on my phone over the course of a few weeks and brought that to the dealer with the TSB.

So I guess that is how it works these days. You own a $30k+ car with issues and have to play hardball to get them to honor the warranty that every car manufacturer touts as some sort of good thing.

Problem And Likely Cause: Car threw a check engine light yesterday (Friday 2/14) morning. Result of code P0172 System too rich bank 1

Modifications: Cobb Stage 1 + (big sf intake)

Submitted For Warranty Work (Yes/No): Yes

Reason Given For Denial: Was told that "vehicle is currently modified and thus not covered by warranty"

Your Story: So yesterday morning I wake up to a Christmas tree on my panel. Check engine light, blinking cruise control light, hill assist, etc. I schedule an appt at my local subaru dealership for around lunch time. At my appt they check the code and find the above and then start to look for the cause. Eventually they get to checking the software for upgrades and find that I have a modified tune. At this point they call subaru (guessing SOA?) who tells them that because of the modified tune they are to stop working immediately and return the car to me. They never even find the root cause of the code. ALSO they tell me that my "vehicle factory powertrain and emissions warranty is now void due to modified tuning." They provided me a case number for the "modification form" they submitted to I think contact SOA?

I realize this seems very odd since all I have heard about is people being denied warranty work due to mods but this dealership just told me that not only would they not continue working on the car but that I would need to seek out a third part subaru mechanic to do future work (on powertrain and emmisions items). I still don't know what is throwing the code but I guess that is for me to now discover.

Obviously this sucks since I have a 10 year extended warranty on my car (and yes I realize I was playing with fire by going any stage on my car with this warranty). All of the other components are still covered but anything powertrain and emmisions is no longer. The service manager basically said I should cancel my warranty if this was going to be a big problem.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

not much you can do aside from find an independent shop. i also agree with getting a refund on the warranty. im sure you can find another dealer to work on the car, but you are going to be paying out of pocket for it.

I haven't read all 132 pages but I thought the whole idea that they couldn't "void" your warranty was the main theme at yet here I stand?

Sounds like you didn't do your homework before you modded your car. Dealerships don't want to deal with your aftermarket intake and aftermarket tune. They will tell you to put it back to stock. If the light comes on then they will diagnose the car. They aren't going to waste their time if there's an issue with a tune that they had nothing to do with.

they cant void your warranty for using non oem parts that meet oem specs. oil filters and oil for example. changing the tune certainly voids the warranty because it makes the engine run outside of its designed parameters. more boost and power it wasnt designed for. they have no way of knowing if the tune is good or not.

"According to the Magnuson-Moss Act, a vehicle manufacturer cannot automatically cancel your warranty just because you’ve installed aftermarket car parts. This is an illegal practice. That said, if your aftermarket part somehow causes or contributes to a failure in your vehicle, the dealer may be able to deny your warranty claim—as long as they can prove the connection. In these cases, the burden of proof is entirely on the dealership."

Most of us have known this for years, but we all know the MMA is a bunch of BS. "The burden of proof is entirely on the dealership". Yeah right. The only way to win in these situations is to pony up with an attorney that specializes in these things and go after Subaru of America.

QUESTION: Once you flash your car with an AP, am I correct in saying that you cannot put the ECU back to stock (even if you flash the "stock" Cobb flash map)? The dealer can see that you have flashed the ECU forever, correct?

From everything I have read, there is simply a logged count of ignition cycles or something along those lines, which is reset upon a reflash or complete loss of power to the ECU. When you uninstall the AP it flashes the copy of your original map it takes during install - as I understand it.

The code is indicative of a dirty MAF no doubt caused by the oiled filter element. I have a K&N drop in, and i normally clean the MAF every OC because if i don't, I'll (sometimes) get that code after every 7K miles (every other OC). Once i clean it, it is fine until i have to recharge the filter or i go longer than 7K miles without cleaning it.

I 2nd the canceling the warranty as it is now worthless, as the dealership sent in paper work to flag your VIN.

You're missing the most important part of the MMWA- the aftermarket part has to be a direct OEM replacement with the same specs. Adding a giant air filter or a downpipe with high-flow cats are jn no way direct OEM replacements.

Yes they can tell the date when a new map was flashed to your ECU.

Default Warranty Denied for total engine failure

Good Afternoon,

So I just bought a 2018 Subaru STI and put about 9k miles on it. So in total it has 21,734 miles on it now. I check my oil all the time, never had a check engine oil light. I took it to the shop and they are denying all warranties due to the car being 1.5 quarts low on oil. I am lost for word and have decided to seek legal advice. Any advice would help....

Usually when people say things like "the shop" they aren't referring to a dealership. You're story is full of holes. Did you take it to a dealership? You only would have had to change your oil once, where did you get that done and do you have receipts? Haven't seen to many new Sti's eating oi like that.

They can't deny all future warranty claims, probably just those for an internal engine issue that can be linked to oil starvation.

Don't worry. If your window regulator fails, they can't deny your warranty based on low oil.

That being said, totally a dick thing to do for a car coming in 1-1.5 qts low. Especially on a car that has some history of eating its' bottom end even with oil.

Just to follow up on this. I wound up fixing the rattling behind the head unit myself. It ended up actually coming from the A/C vent piece above the head unit. I used some felt tape around the edges. Good as new.

I took the car to another dealer to address the broken cup holder and throw-out bearing issue. They took care of both issues under warranty and I couldn't have been happier with the level of service I got from them. If anyone is in the South Jersey area, Cherry Hill Subaru is excellent.

You have proof of purchase at whatever mileage. Any reputable dealer can not deny a powertrain claim, so long as everything is stock. As long as you change the oil as recommended, which is too long of an interval imo, you shouldn't be denied. Dealers want customer pay over warranty numbers. Speaking as a Subaru Senior Master still working for a dealer.

Problem and Likely Cause: Car hesistates and jerks back and forth between 2000 and 3000 rpm when partial throttle is applied. Car also encounters knock and significant power reduction is noticed when outside temperature is above 80 degrees or so. Feels like a naturally aspirated car the past few 85 degree days.

Modifications: None

Submitted for Warranty: Not yet, I don't want to hear excuses

My Story: I love this car when its cool outside, but the first warm day outside it felt like my old Tacoma and was probably making similar power sadly. The stock tune on this car is garbage, but i don't want to void my extended bumper to bumper warranty by having it tuned, even though a pro tune would really help it and Subaru knows it. Really sucks because Cobb headquarters is 5 miles from my home. I'm hoping adding a better intercooler, CSF radiatior, and an IAG street AOS will allow the vehicle to drive healthy without bogging down so much when its anywhere near 80 degrees or so; could probably throw in the Killer B oil pickup as well to roundout the reliability package lol. Contemplating bringing it in over the hesitation in the factory tune and the PCV issue that is diluting my 93 octane fuel. I know they won't fix anything but having cusotmer's concerns recorded early on in ownership go a long way come time to fix things.

Problem And Likely Cause: Oil leak - bad valve cover gasket

Submitted For Warranty Work (Yes/No): Yes

Reason Given For Denial: No denial, problem fixed once, repeated again this spring 2020.

Your Story: Vehicle went in for service interval, shortly after smelled oil (external leak, heated on block, pooling around manifold). Ran for another year to 202 and problem repeated this spring.

Being repaired under warranty, but wondering if others are having the same problem.

Default Trouble/Warranty Denial Report Thread: Drivetrain (Engine, Tranny, Diff, Etc.)

Make: 2014 WRX

Mileage: 33,500

Time Out Of Use: 6 Years

Problem And Likely Cause: Engine Bearing knock

Modifications: Catback exhaust, sway bars and end links, short throw shifter

Submitted For Warranty Work (Yes/No): Yes

Reason Given For Denial: Unable to provide proof of maintenance records.

Your Story: A month ago, I experience some weird knocking around my engine, and noticed weird noises between 1-2.5k rpm. So I decided to bring my car to the closest Subaru dealership around to have my car diagnosed. Few hours later after dropping off my car, the Service Advisor ask for my maintenance record of my car( oil change maintenance). However, I do not have the complete log or receipts of the filters and oils I’ve purchased. My car is currently under warranty (Subaru Gold Warranty- covers up to 8 years I think?) plus the extended warranty for this model due to the class action settlement (http://www.enginebearings.settlementclass.com/faqs.html). BUT the dealership/SOA refuses to repair my car under warranty nor give me any alternative options.

The reason why I do not bring my car to the dealership for any services is because my brother in law who is a certified mechanic and has over 10 years of experience has been doing all the maintenance to my car. I promise you that my car is in great condition and never abused it.

Unfortunately, I was not aware that if we were doing the maintenance ourselves I needed to keep records of ALL the receipts and log when the service was done. This is my mistake on my end. However we (my brother in law and I) ensure to do an oil change every 3-3.5K miles. I log this by ensuring to reset Trip A on my car, and once it hits the maintenance mark we go ahead and do the maintenance

Can anyone give advice on how to go with this? Is it still possible for me to fight SOA and Subaru dealer to have my car fix under warranty? Thanks!

Any update on this? Getting this bucking for a while as well.

As listed in Section 11, Line s of the Settlement Agreement:
"Modification of OEM exhaust system components and emission
controls, including catalytic converters;" So based off your Catback, they don't have to honor the claim.

Doesn’t your extended service agreement say proof of maintenance will be required?
