and from the looks of it, it will be lighter than wrx despite the difference of power. according to subaru, the wrx is too big as it is for wrc. if this car will be more nimble, and have the awd, it would very interesting.

This. Keep it small. Keep it relatively light. But let it be relatively practical too. And let it be full fun.

I think it'd look better in a 3-door format.

But the writing is on the wall, and it's not just in the US. Most hatches are dropping 3-door format. Even the vw polo is only available in 5-door format now... 3-door hatchbacks are such a small segment, I have a hard time seeing Subaru entering that segment, unless they are literally just slapping a subaru badge on the Yaris chassis.

25,000 units in a single year is not exactly a limited run. 209 units for an STI S209 is definitely a limited run. Creating a dedicated assembly line just to create the GR Yaris is a pretty expensive undertaking to just stop making them after 1 year, but they could only make them for 1 year.

I donít see anything that says this will be a single year.

There are 3 basic builds. AWD, 6MT, 1.6T in high and lower power versions make up 2. The 3rd is a 1.5NA, CVT, FWD in the wide 3 door Yaris body. That is how they will get 25k without bringing it to NA.

+1 Perhaps the reason why it is not coming to NA, is because it was being joint developed with Subaru and they agreed that Subaru would get to release their version in NA.

nope, for homologation purposes only the AWD one with the lowered roof counts. But since Toyota decided not to use this one for the WRC, they can build more or less than the predicted 25k cars. But this car will die after the production run, thatīs for sure.

They are making a 1.5 NA CVT that goes in the low roof, wide body 3 door Yaris. It is the RS model. The RZ and RC models are the 1.6T 6MT.

https://global.toyota/en/newsroom/toyota/32741087.html

There was a report about the homologation no longer being required because they will run the current chassis one more year, but I havenít seen anything official that they wonít race this chassis with the new hybrid rules that come in on 2022.

Dude, I’m on board with the RC variant. I love bare bones purpose built cars.

What about the part where they say it would pack a vertically mounted boxer engine? Hahahaha
How would that be coupled to the transmission? 🤣

By vertical I think they mean the front would now face one of the fenders instead of the radiator. With one head facing the radiator and the other head toward the firewall. It would have to be a different transmission, since the engine would be transversely mounted at that point.

Less power vs others in the race, but lighter weight, AWD, high cornering speeds, minimal understeer..

I'd buy one if available in the USA especially if 3 door.

I'd dump my IS in a heartbeat for a 4dr version with diffs.

Dang it Toyota.

4 door version? Part of what makes this unique and cool is that they lowered the roof and eliminated the rear doors. Undo the cool thing because extra small car needs extra doors.

It must be a 3 door.

Quit screwing over the American hot hatch from the outset. It was the same story with the FiST..
