Default 2021 Lexus IS Thread

A New Lexus IS Is Coming In 2021, And The IS 500 Will Be A Bittersweet Surprise

This new info piqued our interest but we are also waiting for official word from Lexus

While we were worrying about the pain in the ass that is the new coronavirus, back in March, a Toyota-related leak revealed the carmaker’s upcoming plans vis-a-vis its lineup. Among the cascade of novelties, we also learned that a 2021 Lexus IS is on its way.

Not much is out in the wild regarding the sedan, but speculation about what the incoming IS could hide under the hood ranged from it getting the Supra’s BMW-sourced 335-horsepower, 3.0-liter turbo straight-six to more recent rumors saying the novel Lexus IS range might even encompass a V-8 model.

So, how about a 5.0-liter V-8 to motivate the Lexus IS?

Have a quick look at the current Lexus IS lineup available in the States and you’ll see two versions, offered with either RWD or AWD: there’s the IS 300 and the IS 350. The 300 gets its oomph from a 2.0-liter, turbo inline-four (241 horsepower) while the 350’s poison is a 3.5-liter V-6 (311 horsepower).

Lexus IS specifications

Engine In-line 4-cyllinder aluminum block and cylinder heads V6 with aluminum block and cylinder heads

Valvetrain DOHC 16-valve with Dual VVT-iW

DOHC 24 valve with dual continuously Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i)

Displacement 2.0 liter twin-scroll turbocharged with intercooler (1,998 cc; 120cu. in.) 3.5 liters (3,456 cc; 211 cu. in.)

Bore x Stroke 3.39 in x 3.39 in. 3.70 in. x 3.27 in.

Compression Ratio 10.0:1 11.8:1

Horsepower (SAE) 241 hp @ 5,800 rpm 260 hp @ 6,400 rpm

Torque 258 lb.-ft. @ 1,650-4,400 rpm 236 lb.-ft. @ 2,000-4,800 rpm

0–60 mph Acceleration 6.9 sec 6.1 sec.

Top Speed 143 mph 130 mph

Estimated Fuel Economy (City/Hwy/Combined) 22/32/26 19/26/22
If the caption on one of @allcarnews’ Instagram posts is accurate, the four-pot and the vee-six might be joined by a naturally-aspirated 5.0-liter V-8 once the new IS hits the shelves in 2021.

The new range topper won't be called the IS F, though, but IS 500, according to the same 'report'.

What’s more, the same source mentions that the 2021 IS won’t be an all-new model as it will sit on the same New N underpinnings it has been using for the past seven years. Instead, Lexus will tweak the body design-wise, widen the front and rear tracks, and at the same time, revamp the cabin. So think of a heftier facelift of sorts.

On that note, it also goes without saying that we’re taking these bits of info with a pinch of salt since Instagram is not exactly what we’d call a reliable source.

These are nothing but rumors and speculation until further official notice from Lexus, which is yet to come, as a spokesperson for the brand declined to comment on the matter when approached by The Drive.

If I'm buying a Lexus, I'd like to own a car with a reliable Toyota engine.

I had a hard time liking the current IS for its odd (to me) looking front and rear end, refresh looked even worse. Hope they can improve that area.

The 2021 Lexus IS straddles the line between a new model and an extensive refresh. It rides on the same platform as the previous vehicle, and the engines carry over from before. However, the sedan's overall dimensions are 1.2 inches longer, 1.2 inches wider, and 0.2 inches lower. An overhauled suspension has lighter components for the A-arms, coil springs, and stabilizer bar. Inside, there's a standard 8.0-inch infotainment display or optional 10.3-inch screen.

While the regular Lexus IS should be on sale before the end of the year, don't look for the IS500 to be in the lineup until the 2022 model year. Also, the brand's boss for the Australian region says a new IS-F isn't happening there. Since these trademark filings are only for the US and Canada so far, there's early evidence of the V8 model being limited to certain markets.

The front of that car is what happens when you let Marketing have too much input, too late into the design phase. I'll bet there were versions with the badge 3 times that size up on the board.

It's nearly as dumb as the new BMW grills.

I mean, that's even closer to a Corolla than before. Could even say a Prius Prime. Design leach.

Looks like they stole the greenhouse/roof line from a older Acura sedan. Car looks OK except for the damn grille. Can't tell which is worse between Toyota and BMW - why not both?

I like the new shape and the fact that it is made in Japan. Too bad no 6 cylinder turbo, but should be plenty quick for normal street driving.

I like it from the side, and maybe the back. I’m sad to see another car get bigger for no reason.

Speaking of BMW, the current 3-series taillights look very Lexus-esque.

Hard to tell what's what in the entry level luxury segment anymore. MB seems to be the most unique looking of the bunch but even in their lineup, everything looks the same (C/E/S class), just different sizes. The W204/W212 generations looked awesome and distinct from one another.

Personally I am very excited for the new Acura TLX Type-S which seems to be a return to form of the Acura of old. 3.0 liter twin turbo V6 (rumored to be mid to high 300hp) in a car that actually looks good? Sign me up.

I feel at this point every company that makes sport sedans should have a model featuring a turbo six cylinder with output north of 350. The TLX Type-S does look appealing. No manual option though.

Pretty much agree. The current V6 is an excellent engine, but the segment has moved on. I'm pretty sure the base 4-cyl engine in the new 330i is faster than this in the real world, and the new M340i is in an entirely different league of performance altogether.

The Lexus is still probably my favorite aesthetically in the segment, but that will change when the new TLX comes out.

Default New Lexus IS F coming after all (with 354 kW V8 engine), claims report

Quote:
New Lexus IS F Will Be Worthy Thanks To A V8 Engine

It will compete, for real, with the Mercedes-AMG C 63 and BMW M3.

The naturally-aspirated 5.0-litre V8 will be a slightly tweaked from the RC F.

May make an appearance this November.

The Lexus IS has suffered one of the cruelest fates in the history of the automobile. From an unprecedented and unexpectedly great car, it was turned into an old man’s car and has yet to recover. The IS F was a beacon of hope for the product but it failed to light a fire among performance enthusiasts. Now, there’s hope that the next-generation IS F might fix all of this.

Back in June, Lexus revealed the new IS, a largely unchanged but facelifted car. In July, Lexus trademarked “IS 500” in North America which led us to believe that Toyota’s luxury brand’s naturally-aspirated V8 might return to the IS. The only issue with this is that the car can’t, at once, be an IS 500 and the IS F…

IS F is indeed in the works and will feature the V8, the same found in the current RC F. Output is said to be rated at 475 horsepower and 395 lb.-ft. of torque. At one time, there were rumours that a turbocharged 3.5-litre V6 was to be the heart of the beast but frankly, the Lexus V8 is a supremely smooth and responsive mill, very much in line with the brand’s aura.

There’s little more to share about the IS F other than it might break cover as early as November.

Lexus IS

A fresh report suggests a new Lexus IS F is on the way ... and soon.

A fresh report out of Japan claims Lexus will soon unwrap a new high-performance IS F model conceived to compete with the likes of the new BMW M3 and Mercedes-AMG C63.

According to Best Car, the recently revised IS sedan range will gain a full-fat F variant as early as November 2020, powered by the Toyota-backed firm’s naturally aspirated 5,0-litre V8 petrol engine.

The publication says the V8 will deliver 354 kW and 535 N.m in IS F form (interestingly, a touch more power and torque than it makes in the RC F) and be complemented by choice chassis updates.

The news follows Toyota’s July 2020 application to trademark the Lexus “IS500” badge in North America. At the time, rumours suggested it would feature either a turbocharged 3,5-litre V6 or the aforementioned free-breathing V8.

A heavily revised version of the IS sedan was revealed in June 2020, with the updated range scheduled to arrive in South Africa early in 2021.

Best Car furthermore claims Lexus is preparing LC F and LS F variants for 2021, each expected to use a newly developed, twin-turbo 4,0-litre V8 engine worth 493 kW and 650 N.m.

Glad it's happening, wish it had happened before I bought mine; ah well such is the way of things.

Are the V8's offered in both RWD and AWD? Not that I would get one, but I really like the new shape. Very clean.

last time the IS-F was offered(2nd gen) it was RWD only, who knows what they will offer this time around, but likely RWD only as it will probably be a driveline pluck from the RCF.

It seems like the only cars that are interesting anymore are these hi-po versions of already pretty expensive luxury cars.

I'm sure the ISF will be a good car, but it's going to come at a big price I think.

Wow, great news if the IS really gets the V8 back.

Launching the GS F while killing the IS F was one of the most baffling decisions by a car brand in the last 10 years.
