Quite possibly. I've owned neither so I wouldn't know. Definitely just from all the speculation I've heard and reading I have done. It just seemed that the STi had a lot of pricey extras that your average Joe would never utilize if they never necessarily tracked the car.

Just depends on what you really want man.
Most definitely understand that it does really all come down to me since in the end it's my choice and my money. For someone who's never owned a Subaru, I just wanted to get opinions and feedback from those who have.

The transmission issue does concern me a bit, and that's without knowing what's wrong with it or whether you're more oriented toward straight line performance/drag racing/hard street launches and harsh upshifts or more toward corner-carving, easier launches, and softer shifting.

Give some thought to how abruptly boost comes in with respect to winter driving, whether this is the difference between a WRX and an STi before you buy or between stock and "tuned" afterward. A too-abrupt transition is likely to make driving tricky under conditions where grip is lower than when it's only wet.

The transmission issue does concern me as well. I've yet to hear back anything regarding what the issue was and how they (the Mechanic?) determined it needed to be replaced. Could be why it was traded in. I'm not sure if I should take it as a warning sign to stay away or as a sign that at least I know it'll have a "new" transmission put it and that at least they discovered and did it rather than if I did.

If I had to answer and choose from those options, I would say I'm more oriented toward straight line performance + corner carving. But ultimately there are no plans to drag race, track the car or do any hard launches. But that's not to say it may see redline or what not a few times here and there.

Heck, even with my Miata and where I live I've yet to take the Miata canyon carving through the Rocky Mountains.

Another reason to get a 6spd car....

IMHO if you were to get say... a GD based (Less $ than GR) STI even a stocker... you will find the Miata staying in the garage more and more.

I find when I'm only taking local surface streets the Miata is a toss up with the Suby, but I more often choose the Suby. My Miata isn't boosted, but the convertible chassis is already taxed. The Suby is just a better ride and more pleasurable to drive. Anything more than a grocery run I grab the Suby keys.

I'm also betting if you had a wrx/sti that you would find yourself running those canyon roads after all.

Default All The Updates!

I thought I should provide an update to close out this thread.

Rather, than copy/paste my original wall of text I've cross posted, I will just leave it that I am now part of the Subaru family and that I walked away with the keys to this last Friday:

Not sure yet since it's still so new to me and I haven't driven it much yet since I got it Friday night and I didn't get insurance on it until today (since they were closed over the weekend).

It's also got a small oil leak from the drain plug, this was discovered during the PPI, but it looks like the drain plug may have been installed without a gasket or so. Should be an easy fix and I don't plan to really drive it until that gets sorted out, which should be soon.

But first impressions are that I waited and made the right choice that ticks off all of the checkmarks I was looking for in my daily.

it also doesn't quite sound right either. But alas, I think I can live without the rumble. Maybe someday in the future I will have one as a project car.

You could just buy a Evo X. That will give you lots of options for upgrades and power while being reliable.

Otherwise, just buy a used WRX. It's a pretty good deal for the money.

If you are looking for a fun daily, I'd recommend a B8/B8.5 S4. It blows my old WRX and Evo X out of the water in terms of reliability, quiet, and easy power on pump gas (350whp on 91 octane with a tune). Should be around 15k for a used 2010 S4.
