Default New Mercedes-Benz GLA BMW X2 Rival

Quote:
The new Mercedes-Benz GLA will be officially revealed later today (11 December), with recent spyshots and a design sketch giving an early glimpse of the BMW X2 rival.

Although still featuring some front and rear disguise, the recent shots show that the crossover's shape takes inspiraton from the A-Class hatchback it shares a platform with, while the headlights are slimmed down variants of those found on the new GLB SUV.

The car sits lower to the ground than its predecessor, but Mercedes has previously confirmed that the GLA's roofline is more than 10 centimetres higher off the ground, allowing for enhanced headroom and a more upright seating position in line with larger SUV models. Leg room is said to have been improved as well, despite the model being 1.5cm shorter overall than the outgoing car.

Earlier this year, spy photographers captured the interior of the compact crossover for the first time. The image shows that the dashboard is also set to be very similar to that of the A-Class and Mercedes' other new compact models, featuring rounded air vents and the twin touchscreens of the MBUX system.

The new GLA will join Mercedes' MFA platform-based range alongside the A-Class hatchback, A-Class saloon, CLA four-door coupé, CLA Shooting Brake estate and B-Class MPV.

Merc's first compact crossover might enter at the premium end of the class, but it faces tough competition from established entries like the Nissan Qashqai

S-Class of SUVs packs a wonderfully refined and powerful diesel powertrain,...
It now sits below the GLB, the largest car on that platform and a new, fully fledged rival to the BMW X1 and Audi Q3. That leaves the GLA to compete with smaller compact crossovers such as the Audi Q2 and Ford Focus Active and is why it likely has a lower, more car-like profile.

Minimal technical details of the GLA have been released, but we know it will be closely linked to the A-Class in terms of interior design and technology, engines and gearboxes. That means it will adopt Mercedes' latest touchpad and voice-controlled MBUX infotainment system, alongside more advanced safety features and increased material quality.

The engine range will kick off with a 1.3-litre turbocharged petrol unit developed in conjunction with the Renault-Nissan Alliance. This will likely be available in two states of tune, while a 2.0-litre engine will top out the range for the time being. A 1.5-litre diesel will also be offered.

Later on in the GLA’s lifespan, we will see a return of the AMG-tuned GLA 45, putting out anything up to 416bhp through a performance-focused four-wheel-drive system. Before that arrives, there will be a 302bhp 35 variant, as is now available in the A-Class.

The GLA will be produced alongside the A-Class at Mercedes' factory in Rastatt, Germany. The A-Class will also serve as the basis of the EQA, an electric hatchback that's scheduled to arrive next year.

2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class Completes Fresh Entry-Level Lineup
The new 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA-class crossover caps off the Mercedes entry-level small-car lineup, which includes the A-class, CLA-class, and GLB-class.
Mercedes's MBUX infotainment system is standard on the new GLA-class and is displayed on either a 7.0- or 10.5-inch screen.

Pricing has yet to be announced, but the FWD and AWD GLA250 will arrive in summer 2020, and the Mercedes-AMG GLA35 will arrive later in 2020.

Acknowledge the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA-class as the luxury brand's freshened U.S. small-car lineup's coup de grâce. They'll arrive in the second half of 2020 as a front-wheel-drive Mercedes-Benz GLA250, GLA250 4Matic, and a sportier Mercedes-AMG GLA35.

The front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive GLA250 models are the introduction to Mercedes's luxury SUV segment. The new GLA-class is 3.9 inches taller than the current model with a minuscule amount of added cabin space, and its overall shape looks relatively unchanged—updated LED lights and a single-louver grille are the key differences—while the interior gets the bulk of the updates.

The updated interior is a much needed improvement when we compare it to the current GLA's cheap, dated, almost non-Mercedes-quality cabin. Mercedes's new MBUX infotainment system now comes standard on the 2021 GLA-class, whereas on earlier models many desirable infotainment features were optional. The system is displayed on a 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster paired with a 7.0-inch touchscreen in the GLA250 models, while the AMG GLA35's screens are 10.5 inches; the larger screen is optional for the GLA250. Both come standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability.

Every GLA-class is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four paired with an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, though in the AMG GLA35, the turbo four's output is upped to 302 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque compared to the standard GLA's 221 horsepower and 258 lb-ft. The more powerful AMG variant's Speedshift dual-clutch transmission allows it to launch to 60 mph in a Mercedes-claimed five seconds flat.

The standard GLA250 features front-wheel drive and. 4Matic all-wheel-drive is optional and AWD models come with an Off-Road Engineering package as standard. This includes an off-road driving mode with hill-start assist. Mercedes's driver assistance systems, including active distance, steering, brake, blind spot, and lane-keeping assist, come standard on all GLA-class models.

Pricing has yet to be announced, but expect to see GLA250 models in showrooms by summer 2020, and the Mercedes-AMG GLA35 by the end of 2020.

I totally understand why they are doing it but it does make me a little sad to see the luxury brands sellout with these CUV’s.

Yup same underpinnings as the A35 hatch/sedan just lifted. I got a lowering module for my GLC and it sits just right. Looks like a hatch/Wagon - Love it!

I had a GLA250 as a rental and it was a complete piece of ****. I was mind blown at how crappy of a vehicle it was let alone from a “luxury” brand. I came yo the conclusion that the target market is:

Broke white women trying to look more “upper” class / economic status.
Middle class father and mother wanting to look wealthy and fit in with their neighbors who are buying their daughters German cars for their sweet 16. Also white family.

I thought the Nissan/Infiniti was a GLA in different clothes. It even had the MB powertrain.

I was shocked how cheap the interior was. In pictures it looks okay but once you get inside and start touching materials it feels and looks up close like something from GM. The latest Outback/Legacy interiors feel more premium.

Exactly. The materials are cheap, it rides cheap and the car is cheap itself.

Has nothing to do with bean counters. The car is relatively inexpensive and thus would have relatively inexpensive materials. What are you expecting? AMG level quality? I think your expectations need to line up with the costs of a vehicle.

It’s not my expectations it’s yours. I’m responding to your critique of the interior and telling you to adjust your expectations. lol

The GLA interior has always been ****e. Sat in one awhile ago and had a similar reaction, " This is a MB ?" The dash was sparse, materials were crap and if you are a normal sized human being you are eating your knees in the backseat. Nevertheless, IMO this is a marked improvement over the previous gen and def worth a look if you are seeking an entry-level MB. Hate on internet.
