Question Anyone buy a OBD-II scan tool for thier Subaru?

Seeing that most dealers charge an arm and a leg for them to pull a simple code, has anyone in here bought a OBD-II scan tool? If you did, does the Auto X-Ray scan tool work on a Subaru? Auto X-Ray says it will read ALL imports and domestics from 1996 on. It can pull codes, potential codes in process, erase codes, read sensors in real time. It sounds like a quite a good investment for $220. I'm a do it yourselfer and I really don't see the point in having to keep my car at the dealer for the day while they pull up a code and charge me a $40-80 dianoistic fee for 2 minutes work. Most of the stuff they repair are 15-30 minute repairs. Got to love technology.

I just got one from:
http://www.ghg.net/dharrison/obdscan.html

It was $147 shipped (laptop sold seperately) and does everything you mentioned. They also told me it would log up to 4 parameters at once, but I've yet to figure out how. And if you call them, good luck understanding the lady that answers the phone and getting through to Dan (owner, designer I'm guessing) seems to be next to impossible.

Dave, find a new dealer! I just pull in to my dealer and ask them to pull the code, they've never given it a second thought.

Of course, I'm also going to get an OBD-II scan tool. I work on four '96- cars, so it'll be worth it. I'm mainly considering the Harrison model as well.

Man it works with a palm also anybody know what it hooks into in the palm? I have a handspring visor which would be a lot more convenient that hooking it up to my laptop since my palm is always with me. Can you reset the ECU with it?

poppa smurf - on the handspring theres an extra cable you have to order, then it just plugs into the same thing the hotsync cradle does.

works fine

I'm looking for something like this that runs on the PocketPC. Anybody know if one is available? If not, I may look to write one if I can find the necessary information...

Default iPAQ

I am still waiting for one for my IPAQ, it cost all this money yet there are no programs for it and a few for the palms. Also it's windows based so it should be easy since there are quite a few programs out there for windows based computers.

Dave, I agree with Julian...my dealer drops what he's doing, plugs me in, finds/resets, and I'm on my way with no money out of pocket.

If I could get my hands on the code for the other windows apps, it probably would be simple... So if anyone can provide, please let me know

I've got the Harrison palm version on a beat up old Palm Pilot. I just leave it in the car. I've never bothered to install the laptop version, but the Palm version has very few features.

In contrast, the laptop OBD tool for the Audi lets me monitor and log ANY parameter. Very useful when the car felt sluggish, we compared TPS with requested boost with actual boost. Wish I could do that in the Scooby.

I've got the Harrison OBDScan version, i use both the palm and the laptop software. the palm does everything the laptop version does, except data logging. The palm does require a null modem adapter and a male-male adapter, which i think he sells on the site now.
they will both let you clear trouble codes, though i havn't tried it yet. i bought the universal one so i can read any car (1996-newer). you have to go to the website and download version 3 of the OBDScan software to use the data logging; I couldn't get the older version of the software to even work.

i have noticed though, that I can only read the second oxygen sensor (the first one is missing?), if anyone knows about that please comment...

as a side note, dan was quick to answer emails when i first had trouble with the software...

Jon,

Are you comparing the Harrison Palm version versus the Harrison laptop version?

If not, what were you using to scan the Audi you mentioned? Cost? Link?

Jon, did you know that you can get a version of the Vehicle Explorer software what will work with the VAG-COM interface adapter? See http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/tour/obd-2.html. With this software you should be able to log throttle position angle and intake manifold absolute pressure. Not the same, but close.

The shop manual says that in OBD-II Mode $01 (Current Powertrain Diagnostic Data), PID 24 (in hex) is available. PID 24 is AF/sensor 1 (i.e. "bank 1") output voltage (V) and short term fuel trim (percent) associated with A/F sensor 1. So your software ought to be able to retrieve this PID. If not, then there's a problem. One note about the front sensor voltage. It's not the true voltage from the front sensor. It's a synthetic voltage meant to behave as if the front A/F sensor were really a 1V switching O2 sensor.
