The article also mentions development of a multistage automatic. Is this going to replace the cvt in the current wrx and ascent, and possibly go in the new STI to give it the capability of getting eyesight for the first time.

Not sure what exactly a multi-stage automatic is, but will be interesting. I wonder if they've considered doing something like Toyota is doing with the new Corolla hatchback (actual 1st gear followed by CVT).

That's translation talk for multi-speed. I would think it would be at least an 8 speed unit. If it was a modified CVT I would think they would have said next generation of CVT or something along those lines.

Maybe they should make a raised crostrack break= raised Levorg. A smaler outback type car. In the latest interview Mr Doll told Automotive News people stop buying sedans and even hatchbacks to buy SUV or small SUV's.
If there is one company that can do it, it must be Subaru. Could be sold woldwide. |

I own an impreza 2016 hatchback and have been looking for a larger family vehicle. (Second kid on the way) any suggestions?
After doing a couple of test drives of Subarus offerings. I find that the Outback (legacy platform) is too rolly, tall and large for city goers like myself with dated engine mechanics, and the Forester, also tall and too small (Impreza platform), it has a similar wheelbase which the back seat entry is tight. Maybe with the Accent being the new biggest Subie, they could redesign the outback to a smaller footprint. Or.. the Levorg can come and take up the place between the Forester and Outback. The viziv tourer needs to come to the US most likely with a turbo, performance engine. Refined and all, the older 3.6l 6cyl engine is showing its age. Hatchbacks are a must. Wagons even better. What would you call a car sized between a hatch and wagon? They should do that. |

The illusion makes it look larger. Sadly if the Levorg does make it to the US, I wouldn't be surprised if it got the black body cladding treatment and a small lift. |

I agree the cladding has been a trend in automotive taken from more rugged Jeep and truck like vehicles. I don't care so much as they provide us with the second coming of the legacy gt wagon |

Have you checked out the new Crosstrek and Impreza with the updated SGP? They are roomier. If previous gen Forester is too small then check out the newest one coming out.
I really like the Outback. Compared to a car it is kind of rolly, but overall I think it plants itself down fairly well. I've driven it during work traffic around NYC and it gets around pretty great. |

I guess these cross overs are medium wheelbased cars are what you would call them. But every one is lifted.
I tried the outback. It's great. I prefer the NA 3.6 to the turbo 2.0 in the xt. It's a little large coming from a Impreza in terms of nimbleness. But I guess the power and room would make up for it for utility reasons. My thoughts are that the 2020 outback will definitely come with a mid sized turbo engine in 4 cyclinders. Do y'all think the viziv might have a hybrid powerplant? I might be okay with it, if it produces enough HP. |

If you shop outside of Subaru, VAG has offerings in the wagon department, but there are trade-offs. Volvo has offereings right? but again, trade-offs. A Subaru that fits your needs? sorry, not on this side of the pond. You either get the impreza Hatch or make "two jumps" to the outback CUW. Would a Legacy wagon work for you? it wouldn't for me with the powerplants Subaru has on offer currently, and it also doesn't exist. Forester XT? again, crossover, bigger than the impreza, but smaller than the outback. Again, not enough go for me, and I need three pedals. btu maybe for you with a drop and a tune/downpipe it would be enough? I personally don't mod new cars, but others do, so that might be an option. Maybe buy an 06-08 Forester XT and go through it - give it a drop, fresh bushing all around, mild turbo & STi drive line? |

It's not really a 1st gen, engine is the tried and true one that's was introduced in 2013ish in Caddy ATS, then into (and current) Camaro, with all issues remedied. Interior is European GM (better than US).
I think its reliability will be rather good. On top of that, if you can wait until end of year, you'll get them cheap. The only issue is lasting power. Is this a 1-2 year car making parts hardish to get (like Pontiac G8 or Chevy SS)? Or will it last longer? --kC |

I hope not. I LOVE the CVT in my IMpreza and when I go back into a car with a regular automatic, all of the lag during gear shifts bugs the hell out of me.

All those who clamor for an eight speed AT can get one... but it’s not all roses. Subaru‘s HTCVT in my FXTT is THE best transmission I’ve owned in more than sixty years of driving. The one in the Ascent is doubtlessly even better, though in aspects not applicable to me. I chose the ‘14 FXTT because it had a CVT, and later, two WRXs and this '17 FXTT. Each were different, each year the CVT got better. The 4th model year in this Forester is perfect. All my previous criticisms are gone. It takes time to refine everything. |

As someone who has 24 rose bushes I'm of the mind this hackneyed expression means exactly opposite of the truth.
Toyota CVT also has its fair share of forum haters stretching deep into the last decade. Not all roses there either, mate. I did quite like the CVT in our Corolla S+ far more than the CVT in my Legacy 2.5i. Expectations were extremely low though as was the demand for performance, so that argument is moot. It's arguing which lite beer gets you more wasted. None do just noise and bloat. No lite beer in my performance wagon please. |
