I'm happy with or FXT, but I may have preferred an Outback with similar power (and twin-scrollness). The FXT is a fine transition car, from an STI, but now I'm ready for more.
Maybe I'll also be ready for a larger vehicle some time in the near future, which is why I'm really hoping the Ascent is just some ugly duckling that handles like a land-barge. It's a new segment and my expectations are probably unrealistic, but a man can dream. Other than that, no FXT (or Outback version), and they won't be options either.

Very impressive set of features, but needs more power. Will wait for XT's return or will buy other brand.

The more I look at this new one, the uglier it gets. Especially the tail end. Those lights, that grille. Ugh. Why Subaru.

For the first time in like 20 years, I'm about to say I'm done with Subaru. The only car I'd consider getting is a WRX since I've never owned a turbo car. |

I'm a weirdo because I like the new taillights a lot.
Angelus, the turbo Subies are fine. Just higher maintenance. New WRX is very good if you can sedan and body style. |

I test drove my 2012 Impreza and a WRX - it was my first time driving a turbo, was quite fun. In the end, practicality won out |

Japan at least has the Levorg which would have been a great option for more trunk space while keeping the FA20 DIT As for design of the Forester... Well... Another boring look just like the Ascent. Mandatory lobster claw taillights like most car manufacturers at the moment. Last edited by Bellipotens; 07-03-2018 at 06:41 AM. |

Hardly a misperception, misconception or misanything.
The sad reality for the XV econobox is a. low power to weight ratio (thx to CVT + S-AWD above all else) b. horrendous drivetrain loss (hp/tq at the wheels is easily castrated by 29-32%, again thx to above duo) c. no TR690 or 580, just the vanilla belt driven CVT d. el'cheapo styling (especially up front). Dont get your hopes up with the primitive Hitachi ECU/TCU combo either, no driving 'style' adjustment or profiles or anything. Even SI drive on other Subarus is merely a gimmick composed of a few tables that can easily be changed or set equal. The XV should come with the FA16DIT (not for the peak hp but avg tq) or EZ36D (same reason, plus SoA could get rid of the backlog of these end-of-production engines faster) mated to the TR690, get a facelift (especially the hideous 2nd gen headlights and grill) and loose some weight and it would be great for what it is. Competitors couldn't touch it. As-is, they walk it even while parked. Its another modern Subaru meh mobile, just like the Impreza, BRZ, Forester, Legacy and Ascent (for some of the same and many different reasons). |

^^ +1
Also it would have been nice to at least see the 2.0 Diesel engine as an option in the XV. 110kW@3600rpm 350Nm@1600-2800rpm Where the XV 2.0 has 115kW@6000rpm 196Nm@4000rpm The 1.6T has 125kw @ 4800-5600rpm 250Nm @ 1800-4800rpm |

Hmm, I suppose the problem is I'm not looking for "adequate"... The XV has so much potential, but like other posters have noted, Subaru could just make some tweaks and really knock it out of the park.

The mad sales increase of this 2nd gen Crosstrek pretty much prove you are in the minority with everything you just said. And you do realize it is a faster car(with the all popular magazine tests) than most of it's direct competitors. Subaru will likely never have a car "competitors couldn't touch" because that is also subjective. Example: for what I want in a car, the competitors can't touch a Subaru. Someone will surely counter my statement.....and then there you'll have it!! Quote:
Really glad I got to drive one. And it is called the Crosstrek. But I know y'all know that..... |

For example; the Crosstrek does have a TR580. And you’re right on with your example... after 26 years after finding Subaru no one yet makes something I want more. There’s far more to a vehicle than it’s simple metrics, like horsepower, that make them valuable to people. |

You're wrong! Horsepower is EVERYTHING! And when the competition makes more horsepower, everyone else needs to make more horsepower too!
I think enthusiasts forget that these are commuter vehicles that typically don't see high rates of speeds and need the best gas mileage possible. We're on an enthusiast website though, so of course we're gonna get a lot of misconceptions of what "need" for more power actually means. "Want" is the new "Need" these days. |

Crosstrek is the pathetic 'catchy name' (marketer's consumer psychology trick) so the thing sells better this side of the pond. From gen 1 on, its simply been the XV on the home market (and most of thr world) and still is:
https://sp.subaru.jp/xv/xv/ Just like B4, S4, G4, etc. Hyundai, Kia and many other car and electronics (cell phones in particular) manufacturers employ the same marketing tactic here, as the general population responds better to Santa Fe, Elantra, Optima, Razr, Galaxy, etc then their native designations. Sadly, Subaru's diesel is dead because it was an engineering failure (issues galore across the fleet sold in Europe). Too bad as the Forester and XV would both benefit from the low and mid-range tq. Average tq between 1.5-4K RPM, not peak tq or peak hp. The FA16DIT and FA20DIT (even if detuned like the USDM WRX or further still) would do the trick, maybe next gen. Sorry. OT. I'm just hoping the next 3-ish years hurry up. I'm wanting to think that Subaru is waiting for the full SGP swap over before playing their "More STI" card.....and see more fun cars across the board. |
