SUBARU ANNOUNCES ITS FIRST PLUG-IN HYBRID VEHICLE, THE 2019 CROSSTREK HYBRID

CAMDEN, NJ – May 11, 2018

Subaru of America, Inc., which has recorded nine consecutive years of record sales and 10 consecutive years of growth, announced today its first-ever plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV), the 2019 Crosstrek Hybrid. The new Crosstrek Hybrid maintains all the capability of the traditional Subaru Crosstrek with increased fuel efficiency. It can be driven as a normal Hybrid, using both gas and electric power and eliminating range anxiety, or driven on pure electric drive for local commuting.

The Crosstrek Hybrid is an advanced, eco-friendly version of the versatile compact SUV that has become the brand’s third best-selling model in America.

The 2019 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid uniquely integrates the Toyota Hybrid System (THS) with Subaru’s four-cylinder direct-injection BOXER engine, Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and an all-new transmission.

The Crosstrek Hybrid combines the wide-ranging off-road capability of the gas-powered Crosstrek with hybrid efficiency.

Arriving at Subaru retailers near the end of this year, the 2019 Crosstrek Hybrid will also feature unique styling, calling out its distinct abilities. Like the gas-powered Crosstrek models, the 2019 Crosstrek Hybrid is built around the Subaru Global Platform that was designed to accommodate hybrid and electric powertrains.

Outback BEV would make more sense since it could handle a 40k+ price tag and would be sized closer to the Audi E-Tron Quattro and Jaguar I-Pace.

Crosstrek PHEV makes sense with Niro and Outlander plug-in offerings.

Yes, that was my thinking on pricing. I was browsing at the dealer last week and saw a Crosstrek with a $33k price tag. That's a lot for a tall Impreza.

Hybrids are a complete waste of time and money. BEV have progressed just far enough so that hybrids are not needed. Carrying around two entire drivetrains is just crazy. Added weight, cost, and complexity. Do one or the other. The current crosstrek gets 27/33 on regular gas. How in the world is that not good enough.

Didn't they try this before and axed the previous Crosstrek hybrid?

CAFE rules might be just killing Subaru. Wasted money for Subaru in my opinion especially hybrid models. Price will be higher but not significant improved MPG for the money.
For hybrid cars, I prefer to see around 45 MPG range instead of 30-35mpg range.
I thought Crosstrek hybrid was joke since it had 3-5mpg better range than regular gas crosstrek and paying $3000+ more. Very doubtful that Subaru can achieve near 40mpg range for upcoming hybrid model.

Suggests that this is going to be a better implementation than the previous attempt.

Interested to see what comes of this, but won't want one in my driveway.

5MPG city which is significant. People just couldn't get away from no gain on the hwy. The added cost came with added features as well. Before then, you couldn't get the MFD or push button start on a Crosstrek and it also had "nicer" interior touches and LED taillights. LOL. All pretty standard now.

I guess we will see what happens, but I’d expect this to be a better effort than last time. The only glaring issue with the Crosstrek is lack of power, so if this helps with that and gets a few more MPG, good deal. The option to run full electric, even for short distances, is nice too.

I wonder if it will be a change to the AWD system - it can still be a symmetrical system if the rear or front axle are electric power only. It's a Toyota system, so likely not (likely a beefed up E-CVT variation to handle AWD output); but it would be a good move for Subaru in their future hybrid systems - FWD ICE, RWD EV, it can torque vector instead of ABS derived systems, you lose the driveshaft & some parasitic losses, bias can be adjusted on the fly eg. overdrive/underdrive the rear axle; heck "EV only" or "ICE only" mode can be utilized in certain situations, vehicle would have a better weight distribution to boot.

But it's 2000's Subaru, so nope.

In a interview the Japanese boss of Subaru Europe stated that Subaru is working on a plug in that uses Toyota parts, but that it would be implimented in such a way, that Subaru would stay unique. Symmetrical AWD is a huge point for Subaru.

This just in, Symmetrical AWD is not a key design feature that makes a Subaru a Subaru.

Yup, its coming... They already threw the boxer engine to the curb in one press announcement.

Give me a fully electric Ascent with 400+ mile range. That would make me very happy.

My '07 Tribeca would max out at +/- 300 miles. My Sedona gets 400+ (on a 21 gal tank), so 400+ on an EV would be great. I know it'll take a few more years to get there, but it shouldn't be long.

As I sit here constantly commanding google to scrub the internet for any new leaks or discoveries with new info on the hybrid I cant help but wonder why no one has made this connection.

We all know based on the press release that subaru is working with toyota for the hybrid tech but all the articles keep pointing to the AWD prius prime (that doesnt even exist in north amercia from what I can find) and then proceed to speculate on how the crosstrek has no chance to come anywhere close to MPG numbers of the prius prime.

But why is no one looking to reference a toyota hybrid that is more similar in every way to the crosstrek, the Rav4 hybrid? It's a compact SUV that weighs about the same, if not a little more than what I'm guessing the crosstrek hybrid will. It sits higher up and makes the amount of HP I expect the crosstrek hybrid to have. So with that said I would not be unhappy with these specs and I think the highway MPG might be a litle better than the RAV4 thats using a 2.5 vs 2.0 gas engine in the crosstrek.

2018 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid
MPG: 34 city / 30 highway
Horsepower: 194 hp @ 5,700 rpm
Towing capacity: 1,750 lbs
Battery: 245 V nickel-metal hydride
Curb weight: 3,925 lbs

I have read 200hp. Strange that Toyota uses NimH batteries still.

Rav 4 isn't plug in, iirc.

Prime is certainly in the US. Someone just up the street from my work has one.

He was talking about the AWD version, not sold in US.

You are correct that the RAV4 hybrid is not a plug in, however when it comes to MPG rating the only factor I know of to be considered when comparing a plug in vs conventional hybrid is weight because generally speaking plug in hybrids get larger batteries to allow for the all electric range.

I was aware of that difference but took an educated guess that it would be a wash because the prius prime comes with a curb weight of 3,365 lbs and the RAV4 hybrid at around 3,900 lbs. I assume the Crosstrek hybrid will fall somewhere in the middle of those two numbers, but even if its on the high end of that range due to bigger battery and a driveshaft for the subaru AWD system where the RAV4 doesn't have a driveshaft from what I can find. The MPG numbers should be very close and 34 MPG city is much better than the gas only Crosstrek.

Even at its heaviest trim level the previous Crosstrek hybrid 3,495 lbs was on the lighter end of the current RAV4 (non-hybrid) 3,455 to 3,630 lbs
