I would hope Subaru is going to be using the next gen tech, and not what Toyota currently uses. The next gen RAV4 Hybrid is apparently going to be better in terms of fuel economy, but they're marketing it as more of a performance offering it seems like so I wonder if Subaru will do the same? If they try to get the "green" crowd with the a car that gets a couple miles per gallon better combined than the regular gas one it will be a failure again.

People who truly care about city fuel economy probably aren't even shopping the Crosstrek either, they'll either be in a Prius which gets 58mpg city or in a pure EV. |

One would think that this hybrid would have to be somewhat impressive in terms of MPG for Subaru to re-try it, correct?
Hopefully it adds enough of a performance boost to justify the added weight |

Well, that's going to be subjective. We had several Crosstrek customers upgrade to the Hybrid because of the "performance boost" it had. This one could be even more; but, would it be "justified" to YOU?

I call BS on that. Nobody takes a vehicle through R&D and certification for just a 'lets see what happens' study. Saying they never expected it to sell is just a CYA move. Bascially it is the equivalent of saying, "she did not break up with me, I broke up with her".

I guess the only people who can say whether or not it was justified are the financial people at Subaru |

But, they may essentially be doing the same thing. The previous one was available nationwide. This one far FAR less. |

I really can't imagine how it could be considered a success when they obviously did a lot of work developing a brand new drivetrain for something that was killed off within 2 years. Maybe objectively they learned something from it, but I can't imagine that they made any money off of it considering how quickly it was killed.

They have been working on electrification for well more than a decade. Maybe 2(B9 Scrambler, B5-TPH, R-1e, HM-01, how many VIZIVs?......) I seriously doubt they EVER get their money back on that

I dont believe that will be the case. I saw the article out of Colorado stating that dealerships (probably just one) are telling people that this is the case but I doubt they even know any more official info than we do.
I have seen dealers say all kinds of things the ended up being inaccurate. Hell I was walking around the local subaru dealership last weekend while my vehicle was being serviced and mentioned the upcoming hybrid to a salesman that approached me. He never mentioned the announcement about it being the crosstrek just that friday (I doubt he knew). He also still believed that the only info available about the 2019 forest was a picture of the taillight. (thats when I stopped talking to him) I just dont see them going to route of plug in hybrid for a limited release just to be in compliance. Thats a big investment when they could have just done a conventional hybrid. |

The ZEV mandate has tightened for 2018; automakers must produce and sell actual ZEV vehicles in order to avoid having to buy large amounts of ZEV credits. A conventional hybrid no longer counts as a ZEV; it needs to be a plug-in hybrid or a full-on electric. See here: http://www.autonews.com/article/2016...rder-to-ignore |

I always take this website with a grain of salt.. but look at the hybrid setup in this supposed japan version of the 2019 forester:

That's exactly the same as the previous XV Hybrid. They probably are just trying to recoup some costs and sell it in places where people might actually want to buy it.

Har har, funny funny. Well, I don't say anything unless I know. Ask anyone. There may be a lot of folks here that seem to have a problem with how much I like Subaru and "defend" them; but, I don't think any of them will say I put out false info. Now, with that said, I gave it more thought and I will say that anything is possible and they may expand where they sell this thing if it's popularity is bonkers or something; but, until then, I hope you are near those states if you want to see one. |

I Might be a perfect fit. My round trip commute is about 25 miles. I also really want to own a cosstrek. So if it can keep a steady 55 mph plus one hard acceleration out of y neighborhood on pure EV. I'm game.. Problem is my car sits outside the garage.
