Default Review: Cobb Stage 1 vs Torqued Performance Stage 1

2012 WRX, bone stock except for tune.

I purchased the cobb AP because I didn't like the stock tune at all. Not smooth, not consistent, and very unsafe. I got the AP and didn't look at any other tuning options because I just wanted a "plug and play" tune to get rid of stock tune.

Got the AP, loaded up the Stage 1 91ACN map, and it was a minor (power) difference from stock. Definitely felt smoother and that hiccup during acceleration was gone, but still wasn't as smooth as I was hoping. And it really didn't feel like there was much more power over stock. I was also getting knock no matter which gas station I chose.

I decided to go with the torqued performance tune after reading so many good things about it. Loaded it up to my AP, flashed it, then went for my first datalog. I IMMEDIATELY noticed the power difference over the cobb. It is VERY noticeable. With this tune, it it sooooooooooo smooth and actually pushes you in the back of your seat (unlock stock or cobb). With the power I noticed, I was worried I was knocking or it wasn't safe (especially since I'm on crappy california gas).

Well, here are my logs. These are my logs after I flashed the "base" TP map. Eric from TP hasn't even touched them yet, so I expect this minor knock to be gone as soon as he sends me an updated tune. Overall though, from a/f correction, ignition timing, knock, etc, it looks much safer than the cobb tune already.

Cobb stage 1 logs:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/...1RHpPNmc#gid=0

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/...DSENWMGc#gid=0

TP stage 1 logs (without Eric even messing with the tune yet):

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/...RZDJ3aEE#gid=0

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/...RdzZuNXc#gid=0

Hope that helps anyone on the fence about switching over to TP.

Just going by what pretty much everyone else has said. I have no proof, but I've seen enough proof from others.

I'm an expert because I said "just going by what everyone else said."

Makes perfect sense. Idiot.

Sorry. Your comment just irritated me for a couple reasons:

1. I got rid of the stock tune immediately by purchasing a cobb ap without asking questions.

2. Only reason I asked questions about the TP was because I was doing it through cobb and just wanted to make sure it was the same process

3. I never claimed to be an expert on the stock tune especially since I said "just going by what everyone else says."

The Cobb ACN91 map is very conservative so that is probably why you noticed such a difference. When my car was stock I switched from the Cobb 93 map to Eric's and it wasn't very noticeable. The low end felt kind of flat between 2-3k rpm's under normal driving conditions.

Wasn't very noticeable or wasn't noticeable? I am currently running Cobb Stg 1 93 and was debating on switching to TP...

If your currently using the Cobb 93 map without issues I'd just stay with that to be honest. Once you add a downpipe I'd consider buying the TP stage 2 map if you don't have future plans of a protune. That way Eric can make adjustments if needed and you'll get a bit more power from the car.

Just an observation... There are some real pricks here. I have come across several threads where people are just having friendly conversations and then someone comes in attacking other forum member's post. I don't get it. We are all here to share a common interest, no need to make others feel unwelcome.

Any how, I am running the Cobb Stage 1 on my 2012 Hatch and have noticed a slight difference in torque and overall a much smoother power delievery. I plan to go to a protune from Cobb SoCal when I pick up my DP from Nameless and a new TMIC from Process West. Cannot wait!

Hey Hatchin,

You are gonna love Stage 2 with a protune. Good luck with not modding beyond that. Modding a Subie is second only to a crack addiction.

As for the periodic flaming, a lot of that comes from people asking the same questions over and over again or glutting up a forum with unrelated info. The internet has too much crap on it, we just want to keep this simple and easy to navigate.

Couldn't agree more.
Please share your results once you get the protune I was planning on doing the same package and would be curious how you like it, I'm in Ventura so I think your results would be close to what I could expect.

Let me know how that nameless DP treats you. I was really interested in getting one but stuck to cobb since I got a great deal on it.

Oh and as far as TP goes, I can't speak for cobb, but I've gone through 3 major stages in my car, all with Eric (TP). Stage 1 with intake was tons of fun, cost effect, and felt refined. Stage 2 came and it felt like a new car. He was on top of adjustments, and got it right within 3 tries. At that point I could take my friend in his freaking 400whp IS300. Now I'm running a custom E85 map from TP. After tons of data logs and revisions, I'm extremely happy. He was relentless with adjustments and the turn-around time from him is spectacular. Fastest I got an updated map from him was within 20 minutes of sending logs. Longest he's taken was about 2 hours, still very reasonable.

Definitely. There is currently very few reviews on the Nameless DP, so I'll be doing my best to share my experience with everyone.

Will do! I plan to start a thread for my build, in which I'll thoroughly cover my experience with the Nameless DP.

Thanks a lot for the insight on TP! I have been reading a lot into Eric's maps and am heavily considering testing out his stage 1 and ultimately, matching his stage 2 w/ the Nameless DP. From what I have read so far, Eric's maps seem to be less conservative than the Cobb's... which is exactly what I am looking for. What inatke are you running? That is impressive on the stage 2 power, I am pumped to get my car on that level.

I have the stage 1 93 conv map and I noticed a big difference over stock. Im making around 16.8-17 psi on an average day. Maxed at 17.4 psi and it was pulling really hard

I just flashed stage 1 91oct on my 2012 wrx, even 91 octane, Deff smoother lay on the power and noticeable power gain, really smoothes out the transistion when letting off clutch and also easier between low rpm shifts, going to flash the 93 octane later. I did see 15.4lb boost earlier..

I don't really feel more power per say, but my speedometer tells me there is more, overall worth it IMO, I cannot say on gas mileage yet
