Parking Brake will not disengage
I'm having problems with my parking brake. Whenever I leave it up overnight and go to pull the lever back down the next day, the lever moves down into place, however the brakes are still engaged. The car has trouble moving as the rear brakes are locked up. I had this looked at where I go to school and the mechanics simply put it in the garage and let it thaw out, seeing that the problem was weather related - the calipers were frozen to the rotor I think. When I went home over winter break the problem happened again, and my mechanic took apart the assembly and looked at it and said it was fine, the only thing he told me he did was "I shot some gunk on it" or something like that. But he basically said everything was fine. Well I'm back at school now and guess what - it locked up again. Should I get the whole parking brake system replaced or what? Has anybody else had this happen to them?
I realize if I park on relatively flat ground I can just leave the car in gear, however parking on a hill is a different story. I just want to get this goddamn problem taken care of.

I was taught as a young child not to use the parking brake in the winter.
If there is moisture in the cables, they will freeze. When you use the brakes, they get hot. Condensation can form - and freeze your pads to the rotor. |

That makes sense, although what is bothering me is that I have a habit of putting the parking brake up, and I have done so the past several winters, and this has never happened.

It is the parking brake cable that is freezing. I have the same thing in my car and don't use the parking brake anymore when it freezes. Probably the best thing to do is get any new cable/housing.

go get a heater from the store... put it in the garage with the door down (I suggest a heater that does not use hydrocarbons for fuel... something that plugs into the wall). Bring the garane up to temp.... release the brake... VIOLA!

Thanks for the recommendation, but my garage does not have any power to it.
