Anyone Running 300hp and Similar Torque On Stock WRX Tranny?
I am trying to figure out how much power the stock WRX tranny can reliably handle for a future project of mine.
I know a few people have the Cobb APS kit that boosts power to near 300 and I am sure many of you have done other mods to boost power levels. Did you have any problems with your tranny holding up? What alternatives have you explored (Other than a Dog Box) to handle the power? Thanks for all of your help. Brad

I have 300 (crank)hp right now and no problems w/ my tranny whatsoever. I'll have the Cobb FMIC, STi injectors, and Supra fuel pump installed soon and I'm sure the tranny will still hold up just fine....

at about 320 hp - ebverything is ok if you dont shift that hard.
When I went over 360 HP on race gas - thats when i started smoking clutches and broke a 2nd gear off a tranny |

I'm at about 300 and the tranny is fine. Hard shifts do cause some slipping of clutch. Be nice to your car and your tranny should survive a long time. If you are going to drag race, drop the clutch and don't feather it in. This should add a few years in my opinion and if done right your car will still be just as fast.

?
Ok, I am confused now...I thought it hurts the tranny more if you drop the clutch instead of slipping it out.

As far as I know, feathering the clutch is terrible for your clutch, and I would think your whole transmission. Maybe your right about it being easier on the rest of the transmission, I don't really know for sure, but it seems to me to be much easier on the car when I just drop it. When I feather the clutch in for a day at the dragstrip all sorts of strange smells come from my transmission. Bad smells make me think of bad things. Clarification anyone.

Pick what you want to break...
If you feather the Clutch you will start smoking clutches but it will be easier on the Tranny... Drop the clutch and you are puttin gmore strain on the tranny and saving the clutch.. As Alfrie says at a certain point it doesn't matter which way you go... |

Slipping the Clutch kills clutches but saves transmissions. I would much rather replace a clutch rather then a whole tranny. I would first rather have clutch and transmission setup that will handle the power whether I give it a little clutch slip or slammed upshifts.

I hear that feathering the clutch is the easiest thing on the transmission, but i actually like a quick but controlled release.
Its lasted me over 150+ launches so far... Tears up the tires though, but hey i would rather replace those than the clutch or transmission. One of the main reasons i am still on the stock tires... -Nathan |

Im at 300hp (crank). no issues with tranny. I did about 10 total runs dropping the clutch at 5k rpm, and went to 1 autocross event.
i havent abused the car in about 15k miles though since then, just drive it aggressive but no crazy launches or banging shifts. i also run full redline fluids in the engine, coolant, transmission, and rear diff. i should be at 340-350 crank hp shortly and we will see what will start happening as a result of the extra power. also no clutch slippage at all. im at 21,500 miles so far. I'm running 257 WHP which I guess translates into 300-something at the crank. No "problems" with the WRX tranny beyond what people normally encounter. GoodFinder
