Depends, if you want your reciever to do the processing then bitstream. You got no choice really.

depends on alot of things. if your using dvd and no hd audio codecs then your receiver can probably decode so send bitstream. if you are using bluray and trying to get hd audio, then your receiver has to accept audio over hdmi. if it does you need to know if it will decode the codecs or will it just accept pcm. also will your bluray decode or bitstream? the ps3 only decodes where as alot of the bluray players only bitstream.

well i did some reading here and there. my unit has 3 output versions. stereo, spdif raw and spdif pcm. raw basically comes out as dts or ac-3/dolby digital, which is 5.1.
aparently raw is a little better since it is usually how it was recorded, has better separation, and usually finer detail . for expample if i switch to pcm, then my unit auto decodes and will only decode to prologic and prologic2, whereas if i use raw, then my unit detects dolby digital and it sounds tons better. btw i don't have a HD player, just regular DVD and upconverting. someday i'll afford the blu rays i still need to get the hdmi cable also. i guess my player needs it for upconverting copy protected dvds, which i assume is most of them. my unit does not do HDMI, so it'll just have to be for the picture. i'd just use component, but it doesn't support the upconvert on the protected dvds. so that's kinda dumb and defeats the purpose. weird. |
