And for anyone who is interested, I installed the Forester Silver DIN Flip-Lid pocket in my TR over the weekend. I had to drill one hole per side in the brackets, but it fits and looks awesome !!

i have an automatic 06 2.5i. Do i still just pull up when trying to get the piece out by the shifter? it feels like it is going to break and I don't want to force it...

[edit- also do i need to disconnect anything on the battery?]

Just grab one of the corners of the shifter boot and pull up. Comes out very easily. Shouldn't require too much force, but you probalby aren't breaking anything either.

I disconnected the negative terminal on the battery as a precaution.

Just to make it a little easier, here's the page from the 2006 service manual on how to pull the console. As you can see it's just clips (they call them hook pawls) that hold most the console trim.

So you just pull up on the bottom of where the shift selector (I have an auto) is right? Pull up on the silver/grey trim part?? Im afraid im going to break the trim or the clips holding the trim on. Does any one that has done it know how to without breaking anything!!!?!?!?!
THanks!!!!

Not sure if there are any subtle differences (I have a manual), but you don't pull UP so much as BACK (towards the rear of the car). If you rest the heel of your handon the console with your fingers curled inside the trim around the shifter, it doesn't take much more the clenching your fingers to pop it loose. After that, it's all pretty obvious.

yeah you pull toward the back of the car, and I was pulling at the bottom where peqy has the arrows drawn in the picture. just pull it up slowly then you should be ok, there is not much to it.

Just traded the 04 for the 06 TR on Thursday and I've already got the Espelir CB on and I've had a bunch of questions about head units and speakers and this is thread has answered almost all of them. Now that I know just about any head unit I get will work, what is the vote on speakers? Keep stock size? bump up to 6.5 and 5.25? get 6.5 and 5.25 shallow speakers? Any suggestions will help.

Sorry forgot something. Where is the best place to get the adapters for bigger speakers? Which speakers do you recommend? Also I don't have the tweeter kit on my 06 is it a pain to install component speakers?

I am also curious as to what the circled in red is for (posted by peqy). If anyone know please respond.

I am new at this too. I do not know much about stereo head unit. For those that opened up their console, is there an auxilary input at the back of the stereo head unit? I am interested in using a portable mp3 player and want to directly link it to the stereo. I don't want to use FM transmitter since the impreza's radio antenna has bad receptions. If you know, please let me know. I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

Nevermind. Found some info about the auxilary input myself. For anyone that wants to know. Apparently, the stock unit doesn't have one. The choice would be either to get a new head unit that has it, or an aux-in board and install it in the stock unit (if you want to keep stock unit), or FM transmitter (for those that want no hassle), the iRiver AFT 100 FM transmitter seem to be getting some pretty good reviews.

Forgot to mention. Thank you AZRally for the wonderful instructions and pictures for stereo installation.

The red thing circled in the picture above is actually a manual release for the shift selector (Automatic only). If for some reason the mechanism gets stuck in park or any gear you can pry the cover off and access a screw to release the shift selection mechanism. Kinda weird.......i read that in the owners manual cuz i had the same question.
