Anything a new BRZ owner needs to know?
Hey,
Friend of mine just bought a BRZ Ltd this past weekend; he's picking it up tonight. Anything in particular he should be watching out for (other than the normal dealer prep stuff)? He already drove his car on Sat when it was delivered to the dealer, and all seems well, just thought I'd check here to see if there's anything you guys have noted after already having these for a bit. Since I've been teaching the guy to drive stick, he let me drive it too; what a blast this car is. Fun to rev & push it, without worrying about going to jail over it. |

wait a while before modding it, or wrapping the tails. he might get condensation in hte tails. i have it in both but happened after a few months...the navigation might act up, thats just a software update through the dealership. if he gets the crickets, dont worry.
most of all, get snow tires! the stock tires are awful. ENJOY IT! |

The stock tires are perfect for tail-happy fun. No clue why people keep saying they're bad.
For autox, width matters. For random hooning, stock tires are fine. Expect window auto up/down issues from ice thawing on the sensors in the door. It's in the manual on how to deal with it. |

chano, stop smoking the chronic! the stock tires while are yes easy to break loose offer no confidence on the road in anything but dry weather. i'm all for hooning, but you can hoon with ANY tire if you know what you're doing. i can't wait to slap on my 255 michelin super sports.
i haven't had window issues...yet |

I hoon on the ice with studded snow tires. I hooned on the stock WRX tires at freezing temps, but grounds were still dry. I also hoon in the rain. I don't care WHAT tires the car has, I'll do it. The issue is how EASILY the tires can break loose. The car itself evokes enough confidence to where I wasn't worried about the tires. You can feel when they want to break loose. I just think you're missing the point of the tires. Subaru/Toyota have already stated why they specifically picked the tires. They're only horrible if you're looking for ZOMG ULTIMATE GRIP!!! I expect slide and I want it when I ask for it. This is why Top Gear enjoyed low-speed drifts. Having wider, stickier tires forces you to try harder, go faster. Even Rally Sport Direct switched up tires to bring back that "drama". |

check in the glove box for two plastic plugs. If they are there, your dealer forgot to install them in the rocker panels under the car.

Hooning is all well and good....but I wouldn't trust my 255 615K Azenis to get me to work 50 miles away in inclimate weather....

Best advice is to have him RTFM to avoid questions about TPMS light coming on, why his trunk won't open without the key, where the jack points are, etc.
Aside from that, best advice is to get the car OptiCoated or similar ASAP if he wants that done so that there will be minimal need for any paint correction. Don't have the dealer wash the car unless you want swirls in your paint. Also wait at least 1k miles before you mod in case he gets any of the issues related to crickets, CEL/traction lights, condensation (as mentioned above), etc. A clear bra would be nice to have as well if he wants some paint protection on the front end. |

Clay bar right away. So much crap collects on these cars from here to Japan. I did a clay bar 2 weeks after I got mine and it was caked with stuff. The grounds were dry here in Alaska, so I know the grime didn't come from the roads.

Don't turn off the TCS and VSC unless you really know what you're getting into.

He picked up the car last night, all went well; everything seemed fine, thanks for the things to look out for.
This is his first manual car, so he needs to get (really) comfortable with the basics before he thinks about playing w/ TC & VCS. He got into the stick BRZ from an auto Saturn SC2 though, so I consider it a victory. |

I think the oil consumption thread talks about it with greater detail. Before that I went hard out-the-box in my WRX because I felt NASIOC was full of old skool advice. A lot of people that receive specific training on these cars say they already come broken in from the factory. |

Break in procedures are debatable, as always, but I wouldn't have him totally thrash it in the first 1K. After that, though, feel free to stomp on it.
Also, like mentioned, if he gets the high pressure fuel pump "crickets," just tell him to laugh it off. It isn't detrimental to the car, and there isn't a permanent fix anyways. And a good rear jacking point is the differential, just make sure to put a wooden board between the diff and the jack when lifting the car. Above all else, tell him to enjoy the performance and the great gas mileage! |

I'll add another vote for a more "spirited" break-in (don't get too crazy though!). I got my BRZ on a Thursday and ran an autocross on Saturday. In fact my BRZ had 3 autocross events under its belt by 1000 miles.
I've run 10 events total since June of 2012 and all seems well so far. I did my first oil change at 3500 miles and am getting ready to do my 2nd oil change soon. I have checked my oil religiously and haven't had any discoloration or consumption. I ran a lot of events during some pretty intense NC summer heat too. |

Based on what I've been reading over on the FT86 boards, the part number of the new fuel pump is the same as the old. Many owners have reported having their fuel pumps replaced, only to have the chirping come back after another couple hundred miles

Is this the low pressure fuel pump under the rear seat or the high pressure fuel pump attached to the camshaft that chirps?

It's the high pressure pump that chirps. Not to be confused with the clicking or clacking that is normal for the HPFP.

Yeah, I haven't heard of the "problem" going away after a new pump, so I just haven't fought it. It's whatever. It doesn't subtract from the car's performance any.

I find it very annoying that while my heat is set on high, I turn my blower off, seconds later after turning back the heat on with recirculation, I find myself having to turn off A/C too.
