Default Bought 2 2011 Subarus in 7 days... feeling self-conscious around neighbors

Hey everyone, just wanted to see if anyone can relate.

My wife and I work around 90 miles from eachother and we live in the middle so we both have about a 90 mile commute. Mine is slightly longer, her slightly shorter.

She had a 2006 Mazda 3 with 108k and I had a 2007 FJ Cruiser with 99k. (We drive A LOT, I know). I got sick of the FJ and the gas mileage and I never really liked it anyways so I decided to get another WRX which I got the weekend before last. While we were there we were checking out the Forester and this passed weekend decided to trade in her Mazda for a new Forester.

Used car values just spiked and we got good trade-in deals and around $500 under invoice on each car, not to mention 1.9% financing. (We had 7% and 9% on our other cars with 16 and 7 months to go, respectively). Now my wife and I are feeling self-conscious as we live in a predominantly blue-collar, older neighborhood (we're 30 and professionals) in a small town and we feel like everyone is staring at us now.

I know, boo-hoo, you have 2 brand new Subarus Too sensitive? Anyone else have similar stories?

There probably just checking out your rides. I have a new 2011 SWP WRX and everyone stares at my car(that might be because I have the only one around here) but never the less they have alarms and are under warranty, I don't see anything to worry about.

I'm not worried they will be damaged. I guess I'm just worried they think we're excessively wealthy or they're jealous or they think we spend our money stupidly.

Either way, if what you say is true, your neightbors need to get over their jealous and it is your money.

Also, I would think you'd get a lot more stares in the FJ Cruiser than the WRX. Hopefully you don't get too sensitive when I tell you that I find them to be pretty ugly.

I wouldn't worry about it. Not any of their business how you spend your money.
Besides, you got a good deal on 2 cars, good trade in value and a lower rate, if YOU can afford the cars, that should be your only concern.

Both our payments that we've been making for 3-4 years went down.

Youve been a member on here since 2004. What did you used to have Subaru wise?

Anyways I saw that you kinda complained about the gas mileage on the FJ cruiser, the WRX doesn't have that much better gas mileage.

You guys shoulda gotten 2 hybrids and 1 WRX for the weekend

But hey if you got the money, fill her up and go!

exactly, that is how I read your story that your payments would be down. You made a good financial move and have peace of mind of a new, reliable car with a warranty on a long commute.

My neighbor got a 2011 WRX limited a few months ago, I want my wife to trade her car in so I can get a 2011 WRX sedan. So much quicker and responsive than my FXT. I think she has her mind set on something else.

I do have to say that you did raise a realistic point on what the neighbors think. However, you read a little deeper than you should have.
My family has a house on the Jersey shore. A lot of people bought/remodeled when the market was rising or bought some really nice boats. I can only imagine how they are feeling since the economy dumped and a 24' boat is like 60k or so(depending on brand, style etc...).
I probably only think about the $$$ for 1/2 a second and move on with my day. I spend more time thinking that they made a nice selection for a boat and it looks good. I don't know a thing about any of them. For all I know, they are millionaries or really broke.

Bought a 2010 Forester XT for my wife. Loved it so much sold my Honda Element and bought a 2010 WRX (basic). Love it too.

You guys are crazy on the hwy mileage. Although I drive pretty conservative I guess. Here's what I see on my cars routinely hands down:

Forest 22city/24hwy

WRX 23city/25hwy

WRX actually get better gas mileage than our XT.

Neighbors? Never thought of it and don't care.

Yes, I used to have a 2002 WRX (bought in late '03) before I bought the FJ in 2007. And yes, the FJ is pretty much ugly accept from a couple of choice angles.

My WRX is getting 22.5 MPG all around average. Just got the forester last night so I don't know about that one yet. The FJ was supposed to get premium in it but I never put it in.

I know these aren't accurate in reality but here are the EPA estimated mileages for all 4 cars. At least an equal comparison can be made:

Avg before: 22.5/28
Avg after: 20/26

FJ: 17/21
Mazda 3: 28/35
WRX: 19/25
Forester: 21/27

So we are actually worse off now if we drove both vehicles equally both before and after but we had additional issues before like we never took her Mazda ANYWHERE because it was too uncomfortable for me to drive for more than half an hour so we always took the FJ. My wife also HATED driving the FJ because it has terrible blind spots.

She only had so many miles on the Mazda because we used to live a lot closer to my work and she had like a 120 mile round trip commute. Now we can take the Forester everywhere when we go on longer trips which will improve us by 7 MPG when we travel on longer drives. (We visit family an hour away a lot as well).

Additionally, when I got the WRX (higher gas mileage was only a by-product) we didn't intend on getting a Forester as well but we quickly realized that with our golf bags and 2 black labs, it just wasn't going to work without an SUV.

Real life mileage is about 18 in the FJ and 23 in the WRX so that is a 28% increase in mileage. When you spend $500 (another $300 for the wife) a month on gas, it makes a difference.

Im on the let the haters hate side. Who cares about your neighbors, you not only got a nice upgrade.... sounds like you made a good financial decision (except you restarted your loans that were almost paid off). That being said... your payments went down on both and you both sound a lot happier and more comfortable in your commute. Sounds like a win win for me. As for the neighbors..... Mine eye me too.... only one that doesn't has 2 subarus himself! Guess they just do not understand until they get a subaru.
