Question Pile of Newbie Qs (X-Post from accidental post in conversions topic)

sorry for the crosspost...accidentally posted in the wrong place

alright...i picked up a 95 impreza 1.8L awd 2 weeks ago, and have been doing a fair amount of reading. it needs a few little things to get it running top notch, and then i'll start working on it a heavier.

in the mean time, it has 3 issues. one minor, one major, and one more of an annoyance. lets start with the minor issue.

minor issue:
i have a hole in my muffler. I'm debating between taking it to a garage just to get it done, or doing the replacement myself. My question here would be, what mufflers can anyone recommend as a not-so-ricey but still nice and shiny, affordable muffler. also, what size inlet does my car have stock? i cant seem to find that measurement anywhere.

annoyance: my shifter has an incredible amount of play in it. Tom over at Karboy has informed me that the front/rear bushings will fit in my car, and the install looks really simple...so im prepared to take that on. when i asked about upgrading to a short shift, he said i'd need to do a linkage swap from a 99 on up..can anyone give me an idea of how rough of job this is, and where i might find what i need to purchase?

finally, the "major" issue:
upon warming up, i get an occasional burning rubber smell, accompanied by smoke from my engine bay. not a ton of smoke, just enough to seep out from the edges of the hood when im parked...me oil levels are reasonably consistant, my engine is not running hot at all, and my idle is smooth as a baby's bottom. anyone have any suggestions/recommendations/ideas?

thanks in advance, i look forward to response as lurking in the forums has turned up a wealth of information already.

cheers,
Alex

Yeah, I would definately get that checked out ASAP. I'm thinking it probably has to do with the belts. After your car has been sitting for a while, pop your hood and let someone else start your car while you watch the engine bay. Once you find where the smoke is coming from, update the post and maybe people on here will be able to help you. As for the other ?'s, what do you consider "not so pricey"? And changing the shift linkage could turn out to be harder than you think depending on your level of mechanical skill. Look in the Private For Sale forums for somebody parting their car out, or ask some venders who sell a lot of parted-out items.

replace the muffler yourself.

Yes, those bushings make a huge difference.

Get the burning smell thing checked out by a mechanic you trust.

You can get a new muffler on Ebay for cheap. You can get an entire system on Ebay for cheap. Keep in mind, that you will get what you pay for. Buy a used one from the classifieds on this list.
It is not just the bushings that give so much play to that shifter. There is an offset universal joint that suffers far more than those bushings with extended use. It is attached to the single rail coming out of the transmission and to the top shifter linkage member.
I am not saying the bushing that you replace on the lower arm doesn't have play, but I have seen more play at this joint in my own car.

Read below.

You are just gonna have to carefully hunt around for whatever is burning under the hood. Look underneath the car in your hunt for whats burning. The hottest thing in your engine compartment is your turbo, after that the cats that are in line behind it. Something has attached itself to them, maybe a wire, hose, shrew, dead bird, etc...

-Good luck

update:
im fairly confident it's NOT my headgasket...for one, im not getting any color to my exhaust. i'm not losing oil pressure, im barely losing enough oil to notice except for when its exhibiting this smokey/smelly behavior.

i havent pinpointed the EXACT location of the leak, but i know its passenger side right above where the exhaust pipe begins to head towards the back of the car. wherever the leak is, is causing the oil to well up into a drop, and once the drop is big enough to break free, it falls and hits the hot exhaust pipe...hence smoke/smell.

i got a quote from a local mechanic to put in a new mid-pipe/exhaust for $180ish including labor ($35 for labor...its 70+60 for exhaust and mid-pipe respecitvely)

opinions?
thanks.
