If the car had start/stop inevitably it would only stop, not start, for 79's car, and be added to the list of problems.
Some things are better left alone... |

Just checked my oil. I have 4700 miles on the OC and I am reading halfway between low and high. Does anyone know roughly how much oil I would need to go from half to full?
Not really happy that it is consuming at all, but this I am sure is within the acceptable range. |

probably about 1/2 quart. Usually the area between the two dots on a dipstick indicate one quart.

Yep. The gauge between the marks on the dipstick is 1.1 quarts. I still haven't had the chance to take the spashguard off and look for signs of coolant leaking anywhere under the car.
Did your low oil light come on, STeye? It will usually come on at the midpoint between the marks. |

So I wonder how many people who own 2012 Impreza 2.0's have to add oil and how many don't burn any appreciable amount.

1.1qts between the dots. so a little over 1/2 qt. sounds like yours is using about the same amount as mine |

My coolant level is maybe 1" above the LOW level mark when cold, and is perfectly on the HIGH level mark when hot. So I don't understand how your coolant level can stay so consistent regardless of temperature. |

There is something I noticed when I checked my oil today. The car was cold where I pulled it into the garage to check the oil. I let it sit for 20 mins before checking. At that time it read just a bit over the MIN! I then took the car out for a couple mile drive to fully warm it up then parked it for 20 mins and the result is what is shown above. It appears as if you start the car cold for a couple of seconds, the oil isn't hot and it gets splashed around the engine. Because it's cold, it doesn't then drain down to the bottom. It took the oil getting hot for it to settle and read correctly. |

yep. I've found the best time to check the oil is ten or twenty minutes after its been driven long enough to get fully warmed up to operating temp.
Steve, I don"t know what to tell you, I check the oil and coolant so often its ridiculous. They both measure the same for all intents and purposes. as I said, I have very little variation at all between cold or hot on the oil or coolant> obviously ymmv. |

I just had bad luck too... 4 brand new tires.
Within 1 week. 2 Screws found in tires. 1 Was not deep and facing the sidewall driver's side. The 2nd..Flat right in the middle rib of the Hankook Evo tire as I hit the on ramp. I needed to get that one patched....Needless to say... I feel cursed...like how does that even happen. Literally perfectly in the center of the tire. |

havent posted in a while, but after an oil change from subaru 500 miles ago i got a low oil level light, then it turned off and turned back on so i checked my oil and it was at the bottom dot. took it to subaru and they said there were no leaks and just to keep an eye on it and put some oil in when it gets low. they also said a lot of new engines consume oil until around 15k miles, bs if you ask me, my 3 previous brand new cars had no such problems.

Wait, now I'm confused. How many times has your oil light come on? Did it come on again after the dealership topped off your oil level?

Wow that's pretty massive consumption. You should just about qualify for a warrranty fix/replacement.
Have you complained to SOA? |

Two things this thread shows is all dealers are totally incapable of properly doing OIL CHANGES. And also, apparently dealers are telling people that new cars burn oil. I can't believe they expect you to be okay with that kind of issue on a brand new Subaru. Actually I can.
Another thing I've learned is that they don't actually like for you to be honest on their Customer Satisfaction surveys. In my case, they no longer send them. Subaru of America are just a bunch of lying, know-nothings who get paid to answer calls. They know absolutely nothing about the cars, and the dealers don't either. If mine was that far down after 500 miles, I'd be watching the dipstick very very regularly, and have a complaint filed. Filing a complaint would put your info into the list in case they actually decide to step up to the plate and do the right thing. I'm not holding my breath, but at least if there's a recall or something you're documented. |

If you don't do your own oil changes you should at least educate yourself enough to check the oil level after someone else changes your oil.
There are multiple horror stories of oil change places overfilling, underfilling, forgetting the drain plug, or the fill plug, or the dipstick, or not changing it, etc. They are not urban legends. One friend had her rebuilt big block engine destroyed when the oil change place didn't refill it, and my father drove off from a toyota dealer without the fill plug, which resulted in oil sprayed all under the hood on his new Sienna. I have myself 'accidently' left an oil filter washer on the block and installed a new filter over it (suprisingly common mistake). But I caught that as soon as I started it up, so it didn't cause much of a problem. Anytime anyone does work on your car, inspect it afterwards to make sure nothing obvious is screwed up. I had to teach our teen daughter this, after she came home and asked me if I could tighten her lug nuts on one wheel because "something was off". What was off was one lug nut, missing, and four others falling off, because the "licensed state inspector" did not retighten the lug nuts after pulling the wheel to check the brakes. |

^^ Good advise, and is a large reason why I do my own oil changes.
Let's face it, no bored grease monkey who is measured against getting a job done quickly cares as much about doing a good job on your car as you do. I use quality products, and I'm willing (even eager) to take the time required to cross my T's and dot my I's. I wipe oil drips clean. I inspect other rubber components like CV/ball joints while I'm under the car, and look for drips and other issues. And then I run through a mental check list before lowering the car off the jack/stands and starting it:
Knock on wood, I've never effed up an oil change on my own car. |

What amazes me is that subaru apparently hasn't done much if anything to clue the dealers in on any aspects of these cars. Mastro insisted that the spec for a 12' impreza was 5.8 quarts. I politely asked them to look it up, and told them they had the fb confused with the fa from the brz. But no one at any level in the Subaru corporate foodchain knows much about these new "wonder cars" other than- "these things just burn oil, that's how new cars are designed".

Cars have an acceptable amount of oil consumption. For example, my car is obviously consuming some oil, however it meets the threshold for what is acceptable. Regarding the dealer not knowing the capacity of oil, that is not SOA's fault. It is the ignorance of the technician that is to blame.

I've never had an oil problem, and have always done all my own work unless it was something major. Letting dealers touch my brand new car was a BIG mistake.
But as mentioned, at least I have it ALL documented. |

I always do my own oil changes, but I am willing to let them do it since it's free. I have and will always check my oil after a change since I really don't wholeheartedly trust dealers.
When I first took delivery of my SECOND '12 Impreza, the technician who performed the pre-delivery inspection soiled the sun shade on my moon roof. They then tried to scrub it resulting in the felt getting all screwed up. I pointed this out and they said they would replace it. I ended up doing the job myself because I didn't trust a tech that couldn't perform a PDI without screwing up. The process for changing the sunshade requires the removal of half the plastic in the car. I wasn't about to trust them to do that correctly. |

Three service managers didn't know how much oil. The general managers are clueless. The techs regularly put 6+ quarts in. My car came with the greasy fingerprints on the visors, headliner, etc. Other than putting Nitrogen in the tires, my car really didn't get much of a pdi. It was dirty, and they usaed oversized wood screws to put on my liscense plate, which is all scratched up from their air tool. My lugnuts are also rounded down a good bit for only having two tire rotations. Only YOU can prevent dealer mishaps... Only you! |
