Default Mid-Engined Corvette Program Reportedly Inching Towards Public Confirmation

Mid-Engined Corvette Program Reportedly Inching Towards Public Confirmation

General Motors is in a good spot. The automaker is profitable, itís back under private control, its ignition switch fiasco has nearly come to a close and, more importantly, its portfolios across major automotive markets are extremely competitive.

Why do we lay that out first? Because, it means GM can afford to allocate extra capital for a very special project. That project is a mid-engined Corvette. While the automaker, nor the Corvette team, has said any word of confirmation, Corvette Forum has reportedly received some sensitive intel from an unnamed source.

According to the source, the mid-engined Corvette has been under development for a few years now, with the first test mule spotted this time last year. That, or thereís going to be a very niche, wide-body Holden Commodore Ute with an unusable bed. The source also spilled the project is likely heading to validation at the time youíre reading this, meaning a confirmation of the program should be public soon, maybe even this year.

Attitudes inside GM are fierce towards upsetting cross-town rival, Ford, and its GT supercar it revealed at the 2015 North American International Auto Show, and certain insiders have been itching to upset the GT. With that information, if the source is accurate, weíd place our bets on a big announcement for the 2017 North American International Auto Show.

This time (well, the last couple years) actually seem believable for a change. Test mules, decent business case and Ford going to LeMans.. If Corvette can come out with a mid 200-300k "poor mans" exotic, they can probably do alright.

200-300 is a poor mans exotic? Maybe if they do a poor mans supercar, but that's high for an exotic.

I thought it went: Sports car / Supercar / Exotic / Hypercar / Something Arab.

Regardless, if they can undercut the GT and offer something less racecar and more GT they might be onto something.

No. Supercar used to be the hypercars before the hypercars.

Buddy, the corvette is supposed to be the affordable sub-$60k sportscar.

Putting the engine in the middle and charging over $100k makes it no longer a corvette.

Put the engine in the middle and charge $60k base... still a corvette.

Then the C6 ZR1 wasn't a Corvette? The C7 Z06 + Z07 pkg isn't a Corvette either? Both were / are over $100k.

Nah, those were souped up supercars. What percentage of corvette sales did those account for?

Have you seen the reliability problems those two examples you cite have had? They can't even make it around willow springs and laguna seca. What was the magazine? Motortrend? Car of the year? Every other one of those on the road is in limp mode.

More than you think, maybe. Z06 with Z07 package sales account for 10.12% of all Corvette sales for MY2015. C6 ZR1s outsold Z06s three to one in MY10, accounting for 12.9% of all Corvette sales that year. More than one in ten...

The latest reviews say they fixed the issues. Watch the one with the GT3 and Viper

They need to break corvette off as its own separate brand and make an uber mid engine version, the current version, and a base model version, then release an SUV in the line up

You think I am kidding

Nobody says Chevrolet Corvette

It's just corvette or vette

That has been mentioned before. Would not be surprised if it was just "Corvette" and sold in their own showrooms / space.

Basically you would have:

Corvette/ Corvette Z06 / Corvette ZR1 / Corvette Zora (has a nice ring to it, eh?)

Everything but the SUV you mentioned may very well be what GM will do to the "Corvette brand" if/when this mid-engined version FINALLY gets the green light for production. IMO, the ZR-1 moniker should be reserved for the mid-engine layout given it will be a performance step above the F/R Z06.

All the butthurt Corvette traditionalists should thank/blame Ford for this.

Corvette: A small warship designed for convoy escort duty.

Yep, Corvette would be the perfect name for the D-Bag sports SUV category.

A mid-engine Vette has been talked about since the late 1960s. Nothing new to see here.

While I think Corvette could easily stand on its own, I do not think chevy will ever let go. I mean without them, all they have rental cars and Camaros.

Difficult to say. When it comes to the mid-engine Corvette, I would normally sit firmly in the "they keep talking about it but its never gonna happen" camp; however, I seem to remember one of the rags did a huge article for the launch of the C7 and in there they interviewed a GM head, and he was saying they were "Go" for a mid-engine car that got canceled because of the bankruptcy. And IIRC he even said they are getting back on track for a potential mid-engine C8, since the high end models are getting too much power to stay FR much longer. That sounds... plausible, but I wish someone had scans of the article I'm remembering.

Regarding the brand, you might be right. I don't think it would be bad to have a Corvette brand if they made a couple different models to go under it. On the flip side, the main purpose of having a halo car is to bring people to your brand; not to create another one. Even though the situations would be slightly different, it does make one wonder if GM observing the failure of Chrysler's separate SRT brand will factor into that decision...?

This rumor pops up every few years, and I never believe it.

It's: Sports car / Exotic / Supercar / Hypercar / Something Arab

Bunches of companies make sports cars.
Companies like Ferrari and Lamborghini make exotics, but their top end models like the LaFerrari are supercars.
Companies like Koenigsegg make hypercars.
Then there's the Arabs.

Spinning Corvette into it's own brand is Genius. But it's GM, so they won't do it.

Here's the thing, after the last corvette redesign, the engineers were publicly stating that they can't squeeze any more performance out of a front engine configuration.

That's probably a hint.

Well, the vette' already is technically mid engined since the engine sits completely behind the front suspension
