mcu81-

I was thinking of going that route, as the harness will cost me some time and money, just the same. What about spark advance? anything else a new ECU could do? Just wondering how perfect I would be that route vs the 99 ECU. Also, what about the TB? I've got the newer one. Is it better.

Damn typing stings. Such a little nagging thing. Where's the pity party?

So a simple ECU reset won't get the ECU outta limp mode? I'd have the dealer or whoever scanned the ECU clear all codes and try it again.

BTW...your rich condition is telling you that your 2.5 doesn't want 2.5 injectors with that ECU......unless you drop fuel somewheres else, like pulse width. But since you're in limp mode, you don't have much choice right now.

It's not limp. At least I don't understand it to be that way. It;s not like it won't get power. Just down low it won't. The top end, although a little studder from time to time is not too awfully bad. I asked about a reset and the mechanic said they couldn't. I don't know if that's true, but he didn't want to do it. I'll stop by the other Subi shop on the way outta town tomorrow.

I don't know that it is a rich condition. It's just a condition. The ECU is in one mode, unchanging. Another thing the mechanic said is that it doesn't change back and forth from open to closed loop in this state. It just stays the same.

There were no CEL's. And the other stuff wouldn't even come up. None of it. The ECU isn't talking, it's just running it's predefined map.

it can't be reset according to the mechanic. It's not talking at all. It's not rich that I know of, it just is. One map, unchanging. He said it didn't go into open or closed loop, it just always runs thta map. Makes sense, because when it's cold, it smells gassy, and has a serious bog coming off idle. It gets better and better util it reaches normal operating temp.

pull your negative for an hour, hook it back up, start her, wait 5-10 min at idle then take her for a spin............i think that is suppose to reset it..........and just get a safc, the timing if OK not super but its not worth messing with

here's my best idea ever. I'm going to Dallas. If it blow up, it was a bad swap. If not, I can work with it. I'll be posting from the road soon, on the new Treo phone. Sound like a good idea?

Me nither, but that's what I'm doing.

You must have a windows ECU......:P
Okay, so how much would a used 97 L ECU cost you? I'm guessing not much given it's an L and not an RS or WRX etc...

You got any friends with a 97 that would allow you to plug in their ECU for 10 min? How about a dealer with a 97L on the lot? Go test drive it to your house and swap ECU's to check for sure! You could always say it had a "little bog" and pass on the deal....

Don't give up on the L ECU yet. The wiring alone would make me want to explore every other option first before going to a 2.5 ECU.

to reset the ecu take the positive battery lead off and connect it to the negative of the battery for 30s. This will allow the ECU to reset.

i'm not sure if this is the problem as i understood limp mode to mean the motor would make no power after 4K rpm.

Get another 1.8 ECU and test it.

On another note I still didn't get an answer as to how that other guy adjusted his fuel mixture.......

PM me and I'll give you my number. I'm in Dallas and I did this swap earlier this week and mine came out perfect. The shop I work for does alot of conversions like this. If you want help when you are in town, let me know...I have some ideas.

resetting the ECU does nothing. I've tried many times. In fact, just did it again.

Rick-You have PM. I'm headed your way immediatly.

I'm in Dallas, and guess what?!

FIS (Forced Indusction Systems) in McKinny fixed it!

I rolled in late on Sunday, and was greated by Rick. He ran Delta Dash right away and found I was getting a 16% correction in fuel. Immediatly, we know the problem, which wasn't what Subaru said. OK, why then, why no CEL's? No codes at all, so it was time to guess and check.

Rick masterfully worked around from sensor to sensor, checking for possible oddness. BTW, he said I had everything hooked up just fine. After about an hour of testing, head scratching and more testing, he checked the throttle position sensor. A long shot, but that was about the only thing that we hadn't hit.

Viola! It wasn't totally not working, but it's goofy as all getup (well, it was). Rick can explain it better, basically the voltage would jump around spastically as the throttle was in various spots. I guess when I had the 1.8, I didn't have enough power to feel anything. I just figured it was slow.

So now I've got the solution to my problem, but no new TPS. What to do? Rick busted out some contact cleaner and compressed air, see if we could get it clean enough to work better. Better? It's 99%, if not 100%. I'm stoked!

This thing is fun as hell on the highway now. With the taller gearing, I can really get myself into trouble in third. I have another problem though. I'm in Texas, only 30 minutes from FIS, and FIS totally rocks. 4WD dyno, and knowledgable people, VERY knowledgeable people to operate it. I'm now sitting here trying not to blow a truckload of money on intake, exhaust and unichip. But I just found a used unichip at a decent price, IN TEXAS!

Crap. I feel some spending coming on. Anyone know where I can get a good used intake, and complete exhaust system???

Rick, I know I thanked you more than once, but thank you, thank you, thank you again. I could have scratched my head (and everyone else's) for years and not figured out that sensor was half broken. Really, if you guys are anywhere near TX, FIS is the place to go. First off, it's Subaru heaven, with old school swaps, full blown rally car, all the way up to the STi everywhere you look. Second, the knowledge of the car is unsurpassed. I kid you not, after finding this oddball problem, I applauded...twice.

I've extended my stay a few days to see if I can get these parts hooked up, so I can get it tuned at FIS on my way out. Wish me luck. I'll post dyno numbers, regarless of whether I get goodies on it, as I'm going to at least get a couple baseline runs on their dyno.

What other option did I have? Well, there was one point that day that I didn't think anything would fix it. Really, I thought we had checked EVERY sensor on it. Nope. One left.

I'm not one to be throwing "props" around, but MAD PROPS to Rick and FIS. Where alse could I have gone? Really. Amazing my vacation landed me 30 minutes from them.

Hey What kind of milage are you getting?

I am getting 350/KMS on 55L or 15.7 L/100Kms on combined city hwy driving. Seems pretty ass to me.

It's 15MPG!

Don't know what milage I'm getting now. i was getting ~24 MPG on the HWY, hauling ass, before the fix. I'll know when I get home, as I'll have another 1000 miles on it. I'll let you know.

Taking pictures is kinda moot. it looks like a 2.5 in an engine bay. Which almost looks like the 1.8 anyway. Kinda boring for the time it'll take me to take and uplaod pics.

not to hijack your thread, but i have some questions..........

I didnt have any sensors on my 2.5 when i got it, so i am throwing mostly all the sensors from the 1.8 on it........ i got EVERYTHING done but 3........ its the 3 external ones that bolt onto the intake manifold, one has a red clip, one blue one gray, 2 have knobs on them, one doesnt(blue)

I even pulled their p/n all 3 are denso
Red 14774AA471 w/knob
GRAY 14774AA391 w/knob
BLUE 14774AA271 no knob

I need to know exactly what they are......any help is appriciated

also on a side note, the injector wires are a BREEZE, if u have the 2.5 connectors. instead of splicing, all you have to do, but carefully is pull on the wires and hold the plug tight, and the wires will come out, w/their brass ends still on them, then push them into the 2.5 clip..... simple.........

anyways i looked up all 3 sensors at subaruparts.com and they only tell me their solenoid valves........

thanks to any help,

-mikey
