Default 2016 Crystal Black Silica STi - Correction + Coating

Been a busy month and a half.

I have yet to see this color in person so needless to say I was intrigued to see how it would look when completed - it didn't fail to deliver.

Due to severe time constraints I didn't want to go through the hassle of setting up 50/50 shots on every panel, apologies in advance.

The paint was moderately swirled but nothing too serious. Perfect Finish worked its magic yet again.

Tools/products used:

Karcher Pressure washer with no name foam cannon
Adam's Car Wash Shampoo
Metro Masterblaster air dryer
Claymagic clay bar (didn't need this in most areas, paint was actually quite clean)
Rupes15 Mark II with 5.5" pads
Griots Garage Polisher with 2" pads
PC with 3" pads
Sonax Perfect Finish
Menzerna FG400 for spot compounding on the heavily scratched areas
Aerospace 303 for trim and plastics
Optimum Opti-Lens for headlights and tail lights
GTECHNIQ Crystal Serum Light

Process:

-5 minute foam bath using Meguiars Hyperwash to loosen up the heavy layer of dirt and dust on the car.
-Rinsed and foamed again for added lubricity during hand washing
-Two bucket wash method using Adam's Car Shampoo and a Merino Wool Mitt
-Air dried with Metro MasterBlaster
-Masked off all of the plastic and rubber that may come in contact with the edge of a pad
-Measured clearcoat for peace of mind
-Cut at speed 4.5 and finished down at speed 5 with the Rupes
-Panel wipe down with Gyeon Q2M Prep
-Application of GTECHNIQ CSL
-Headlights and tail lights were corrected, polished to a high gloss, and then sealed with Optimum Opti-Lens
-Plastic and trim was cleaned with APC and a soft boars haired brush then sealed with 303 Aerospace.

Photos:

Backed the car out after finishing 80% of the correction this afternoon
Bare Paint

Going to back the car out tomorrow after the coating has cured and snap more photos.

Any questions please feel free to ask.

After Coating:

Note: These are RAW photos, I believe editing them or hiding behind filters is detrimental to this industry. Very fortunate to be able to borrow a friends professional grade lenses.

I spy with my little eye a white and gold STy

Beautiful results! Hard work and effort sure does pay off. I have been on a bit of a detail kick lately and have been trying new products, the latest being F11 Top Coat which I will do a full review/writeup later on. Keep up the good work and shine on! Love the powdercoated brembo's too.

Looking good! I also dig the powder-coating on calipers.

Looking good. How was the application? Any high spot issues?

Thanks for the kind words gents.

Regarding the coating: VERY user friendly, no high spots or streaking issues whatsoever. Using a foam block with suede microfiber applicators and fresh microfiber towels is the way to go.

Appropriate lighting is paramount as well.

That looks fantastic. Looks like Black CHROME.

Is that a white peanut?

Looking up prices for claymagic... WOW.

Is it worth it? I've picked up the 100g CG medium clay bar for 13 and it was very good, compared to this 160g meguiars set that I bought.

Megs comes with quick detailer and a nice micro cloth but man, the claybars (at least the ones that I got) are like gum that have sat out for a couple hours. It worked, but it was nowhere near as user friendly and 'clayish' as CGs.

I go with Clay Magic for only two reasons: 1 - my local detailing shop (www.detailing.com) carries it, and 2 - hasn't marred paint on me.

Other than that, I can't really justify it over any other brand.

With that being said I don't use a traditional clay lube, if the paint is heavily contaminated I'll just clay immediately after washing, using the car wash soap and mitt for lubrication. Followed up with a rinse and air dry.

Thanks, if my memory serves me correct close to 25 hours over the course of 2.5 days.

Great job! I do have 1 question and one comment.

Why didn't you coat the lights instead of Opti Seal?

My comment is about your comment regarding photography.

If you have a friend with pro gear, you may want to ask him to explain raw vs JPEGs

The pictures you are posting are JPEGs. I think what you meant to say is that the raw files have been not edited. Which defeats the purpose of shooting raw. If you don't edit, why not shoot large JPEGs?

Same friend with the lenses set up my camera to capture as "raw" and I export them in lightroom as JPEGs, but that's all I know of it.

By raw I meant unedited. They're imported and exported the same as they're shot. It drives me up a wall when people doctor their photos and crank the clarity to make their mediocre work look decent.

I can understand trying to salvage a photo that really shows the imperfections on a panel but the exposure is out of wack, but after shots? That's laughable.

Regarding paint coatings on plastic - I'm not a fan. I've put Opti-Crap, I mean Opti-Coat 2.0 on headlights years ago and the haze came right back.

It left a sour taste in my mouth and I'll only stick to designated use products from here on out. Can't warranty what I don't trust.

Paint coatings on paint, plastic coatings on plastic, etc.

Opti seal is not a sealant designed for headlights specifically either. But the coating you used on the paint would have provided better protection than Opti Seal. Just saying.

As far as raw, at the minimum, you'd want to sharpen the files a little bit. Otherwise your results are not as sharp as they should be.

Shoot I misread, sorry!

I used Opti-Lens, did I mess up the original post?

Under the process list you wrote Opti Seal. I didn't read the info on top of it where you indeed list Opti Lens
