how "free flowing" exhaust can/should i get?
looking to make power with my forester s/tb. lots done already. the exhaust needs significant work... its rotted, the muffler is long gone, the 02 is positioned to close to the turbo for the wideband that im running... just lots wrong. so, with cats being a non issue, and noise being not to much of a concern, how free flowing can i/should i be? i dont know at what point there will be to little backpressure. im considering trying 3" from the turbo back, and throwing in a resonator or two that i have already just to keep from getting pulled over all the time. budget is a concern, and im hoping to sneak by on under 1k cad. the car will be tuned after installation, so thats not an issue.
what are other folks running with success? what do you guys think i should go with? am i wrong in believing that removing the cat and running the two resonators i currently have wouldnt be to much louder? or should i tell a proper exhaust shop kinda what i want and just throw cash at the problem?

You have performed zero research on this topic and you should. Here are the CliffNotes:
1. The need for back pressure is a myth. A perfect exhaust has 0 backpressure. 2. Quiet for an exhaust comes from the muffler, stop thinking a resonator will perform this function. You sound like a perfect candidate for a full custom exhaust from any local muffler shop. Ask for a full 2.5" or 3" exhaust in full stainless. Ask for them to place a wideband bung where you like and meets the wideband's recommended location. Ask for a loud/medium/quiet exhaust based on your desires and they should have a general idea what will work best based on their previous experience. The above should be a 10 minute conversation speaking to mufflers, tips and other variables. |

maybe i was looking in the wrong places. i was told long ago by an old school guy that backpressure was necessary, and thats where i went wrong. ill keep looking into it, and talk to a local shop.
i really appreciate the advice, thank you! |

Do you need a custom exhaust?
Why not get a Cobb or whatever and make it work, like all the other forester guys have done. Also, you might get better input at a forester specific forum. Sent from my iPhone using NASIOC |

I always thought the resonator was so you could minimize the interior drone sound on the highway.
