Do some research. There are better subs out there if you look alittle. It all depends how much you want to spend.
I'm getting 2 10" Kove Armageddons ($600-$400 for both) and a U.S. Amp 150X ($550-$350, 500 watts bridged in 4 ohms) Both are competition units. They play hard as hell and made to be pushed. You get what you pay for. If you want one of those brand speakers then go with JL. and a nice powered amp. |

I have had good experiences with the JL W6 model line and Boston Acoustic Pro subs. Both of these use small sealed boxes and will sound great.
I have never cared much for bandpass boxes, but it depends on what kind of music you listen to. I would measure how much space you are willing to give up for subs. Calculate the internal volume of the box you can build to fit that space, and then decide on subs that will work well in that amount of space. Having greats subs in a mismatched box, will always sound like crap. Aaron |

Who's installing it?
IMO there are a lot of good subs out there, just depends on your budget and taste. And if a shop is installing it, I would recommend finding a good shop and picking something they carry instead of giving your business to a crappy shop just because they carry a particular brand someone said you should buy. (A lot of bad shops do good business selling JL for example.) |

a bandpass is hard to get right.
Most are one size fits all, which usually means it'll sound bad. They generally play a very narrow band and don't get as low as a sealed or ported box. I would go sealed or ported. I would listen to koves, boston acoustic, crystal cmp's, alumapro alchemy, audiomobile, before you settle on one. JL RF and MTX are all good but they are made for mainstream buyers so in order to be good all around they sacrifice a little sound quality, power handling, and spl. Go read the forums on www.sounddomain.com and it'll give you a million ideas about subs. But remember, no one can tell you what YOU like, only your ears can do that. |

I used an ACI (audioc.com) SV12 in a sealed box with dimensions of somewhere like 26x14x17. I have to say, this is a GREAT subwoofer. It is a home theater subwoofer so you will get the quality of home theater instead of these boomin JLs. It costs $140 for the driver. No car audio subwoofer will come close to the quality that this sucker can pump out. If you are looking for loud boomy stuff than stay away from this sub, but you could make it do it, if you put 2 in that is. I haven't SPL tested yet but it hits subsonic frequencies very nicely with great accuracy. Also, I added bass shakers to add to the musical experience. I swear to you, they do alot. Creates the feeling of a 15" and you wont even go deaf!. If you are in the Bay Area I would be happy to give you a demo of what my sub can do.

I'm not the only one that like's Kove's! They are awesome speakers but you get what you pay for. JL's are one of the best mainstream speakers out there. the W3 series is supposed to be as good or better than the W6 with less power. Make sure you get the stongest amp you can afford so you will have some headroom if you want to push your speakers to the max.

Also don't forget that you pay big $$$ for Name brand.
and go with SEALED if you want quality. |

I too have been very happy with the JL W6 series. If you want to fit 3 subs, it sounds awesome. I think a custom box is the way to go. If you have your spare removed they should be able to get it in there. I have also been really happy with my PPi amps. ALL CHROME!! Really cool.

Miracle Worker,
Those Armageddons are beasts. I have been thinking about going with Kove as well. I also agree with the US Amps. I have a 25HCA and a 25HC for my truck. Even though they are old, they are awesome. To bad 25HCA isn't made anymore. It was replaced by one of the VLX amps(I think that is the model name, been a long time since on their site). I also like Soundstream subs. Yeah, the two competition amps are the HC's and the VLX's. And lets not forget about the USA-800. 3000 watts in 2 0hms. think that's enough power?

If you have a well tuned ported box with a subsonic filter you can get 3 db's more than a seled box eith the same amp and sub.
