As a former investigator this information can be a good tool for drivers (younger/inexperienced) to see what can happen and be aware of certain situations as many close calls and accidents have the same circumstances to them.

My latest with the WRX barely at 1000 miles. On a two lane rural road with speed limit of 55 MPH and commonly 65 without law enforcement issues. I come up behind a car doing maybe 50 MPH (or less). After a mile or so I wait for a passing zone. Drop a gear and start my pass. As soon as I get about his rear bumper out to the left in the passing lane the other driver starts to slow rapidly to make a left into a driveway and I can see him coming over to me and I am too far behind and going too fast to really do anything. So I get hard on the brakes and attempt to go hard right as the other car is already committed to cutting me off. I managed to get over to the other lane and other car makes it s left. I never got down under 45 MPH or so as this happened.
I have seen this many times and this type of action is involved in many pretty serious accidents. People just make the left never looking to see who s behind them or consider that some one could be in the passing lane as they are so involved in looking to the front on coming traffic.(Never mind no signal) I can say I was super hard on the brakes at a high speed and the WRX had nice braking power and the car pulled down straight although I could feel the ABS assisting as they did not fully lock up.

Cerbo, you reminded me of a close call similar to this. I was on a similar rural road with traffic moving a bit too slow, when the car in front of me put on their left signal. The intersection was a bit strange, it wasn't a cross shape but staggered(left turn preceding the right turn). I jumped into the shoulder to pass the left turner and to my surprise someone was in the shoulder ahead to make a right turn. So I went from passing mode to full emergency braking before I could really establish what happened or what queue I missed. I will say that the STi has really good stopping power.

We all do it but most states it s illegal to use the shoulder to pass (even around left turners). That is a solid line on the right.
As I am, you will be sure to be careful in that situation again, LOL.
I can imagine the STI stooping power to be even better!

I drive all day everyday pretty much. I see so many close calls. As for me I tend to be very cautious on the road always looking far ahead. I use my mirrors every few seconds especially on the highway. Looking out for tractor trailer coming in hot. Then I would change lanes if possible to allow that tractor/car/crazy mini van to continue their straight path. Once they pass I get back in that lane when it's cleared. I call this reverse passing. I reverse pass so many times.
Another spot to more cautious with is on and off ramps. I look far ahead and if possible at the direction of where the entrance ramp is coming from just by looking over my shoulder. Then I can adjust my speed to allow a vehicle coming in. As for off ramps it's all about the rear view and side view mirrors. You could be in the right lane that says Exit Lane only and I can guarantee you will have a car coming from the left to far left cutting you off as a last minute exit. I see that too many times.

Are you camping in the passing lane or are you talking about 3+ lane highways?

Most recent close call was the car in front of me turning right onto a side st, I slow down and start to pass him as he's turning (staying in my lane) and a car waiting to turn left where the guy was turning started to go.. he couldn't see that i was behind the car turning in front of me... almost drove into me but I swirved into the left lane to avoid.

I was talking about Interstate highways. I-287, I-95, I-684, and I-84. I am on those highways pretty much everyday during work.

Add I-87.

I do the same with regard to constant mirror watching, adjusting my speed to maintain a decent gap, watching for lane-changers, drifters (i.e. texters; make-up artists; etc), and the dreaded on/off ramp lanes that are used as mini-speedways.

Yeah I didn't add I-87 since I am rarely on there. You will see a lot of things going on when you really take a step back to watch.

Haha I have to share this one.
This was on my other car (07 Hyundai accent manual).

Almost 300 miles from home, clutch goes out. Slave cylinder seal blew.

Drove all the way home with NO CLUTCH. Gears are a little fussy now haha.

Got stuck about half way on a steep hill on an interstate when traffic came to a dead stop in a one lane construction area . nothing I could do. Pulled over and stalled. No clutch meant I couldn't start the car as it was stuck in gear and couldnt go into neutral. So when I turned the engine over, it attempted to go up the hill just from the crank and obviously couldn't fight the steep hill.

Waited 20-30 min. For all sorts of traffic to go by. So busy with tractor trailers and everything else.

I was on the right shoulder.
On the left shoulder before the grass median, was the contraction zone and fresh asphalt and cones blocking it off.

When there was a break in traffic, I threw it into reverse, and cranked it going backwards down the hill against traffic and swung it around into the cones off should on left side. Stalled.

Now facing oncoming traffic coming up the hill. I waited for traffic to go again. People slowed down thinking I was a crazy person facing the wrong way on the one way road.

As soon as there was a break, I cranked it in 1st going down hill. Started. Whipped it around and got going up the hill again. I some how did not have to stop for the next 150 miles home. went through stop signs and lights and everything else. I was in the middle of NO WHERE with zero cell reception for the first 200 miles...

But I made it. Grinded the hell out my gears slipping them in and out of gear just pushing on them at the right rpms. That was one crazy adventure. Got home and out the new slave cylinder in.

Car runs fine still just a little rough going into 1st and 2nd now. Haha

That was some ordeal you went through. Thankfully it was a manual transmission and not a blown automatic. Once a automatic fails there is no way around it.

Great thread, and I am new to the forum, so a great place to start. I bought my STI the beginning of January. My first AWD turbo (Had an M3 before my STI), and it was snowing the day I got it. That afternoon I went looking for empty parking lots and acted like i was 21 again, doing doughnuts and drifting. It was fantastic.

The following day was Saturday, and my wife and kids were out for the afternoon, so I took the Subie out of the city to a rural road with some nice curves in it. With the snow still on the ground, and because these roads were not main highways, it was awesome to play around. I came to a curved 90' turn to the right, with a house on the corner. Approaching the corner, you can see the road past the house really well. There hadn't been any cars on the road in the 15 miles I had driven so far. Thinking the way was clear, I wanted to see if I could drift the corner. I wasnt going very fast, downshifted from 3rd to 2nd and put it into the drift perfectly. Moving around the corner is when I noticed the car approaching that was hidden by the house, but I was sideways covierng both lanes, as the lady in the Hyundai has locked her brakes up and sliding too.

I saw her face, wide eyes and panic stricken. i am saying $#!+, $#!+, although not yelling it, rather oddly whispering it like I was trying to let her read my lips, all with the look on my face like I am trying to convey "I'm sorry, I am totally an idiot". When I started this drift I had no expectations of doing it well, only to see how I could handle it. If I spun out, I spun out. It is a wide road with virtually no ditch, nothing to lose. My adrenaline, skyrocketed with that "loss of control" feeling as soon as the front end of the Sonata came into sight. I somehow accelerated perfectly, and swung it back around, missing her by a foot at most. I drove away feeling like a complete tool box at first, then when I got back home found some humor in it.

My wife does not know this story hahaha

I had one just last week. I put my daughter in her car seat backed out of the driveway and made my way to a T intersection at the end of my street. Now there is a school bus pickup at the corner of this street and parents drop their kids off. Well this lady was on the corner (left hand side) as I was approaching while her kid was getting out of the car.

She said bye to her kid while looking at her and immediately started a U turn. I was directly in her path and had no room to stop so I started tapping the horn. What does she do? Panics and turns to her right shoulder to look behind her while continuing her U turn. So then I really lay the horn on and have to veer right and accelerate to get out of her way. How dumb can you be to not look directly in front of you before starting a U turn.

I have had two close calls both having to do with kids either running across the street or attempting to cross.
1st one was when I was driving up a winding hill. Speed limit is 30mph. I was going right as the hill curved right. To my right was a side street that was a one way. So no cars come out from there. At that exact street a group of kids I guessing part of the running team. One of them was about to run out just as I am coming around the bend. Thankfully I was looking far enough ahead to be able to brake and beep my horn. I happened so quickly.
2nd time was in a school zone. I just made my delivery and started to drive down the school zone. There is a line of cars on the left side getting ready to drop off there kids. I proceed slowly and scan like crazy looking for any sudden movement. Then I see a girl run right across. Thankfully again I was going slow and slammed on the brakes coming to full stop. No horn was applied since that's how quickly it happened. Also that's why you take it slow in school zones especially during drop off and pick up times.

Was having a total **** day the other weekend and decided to go for a drive for therapeutic reasons and someone's dog ran out in front of me and I missed it by a **** hair.

I was in a line of traffic in a 40 mph zone and if I'd been riding ass (5 feet ahead of where I was) then that dog would be dead and I'd have an insurance claim for bumper damage.

I could just imagine all the judgmental looks from folks driving by and seeing a riced out econobox and a smeared yellow lab on the road.

7 or 8 years ago I had just bought my first "fast" car(2006 Cobalt SS supercharged)

A guy in a VW Jetta was revving at me. so we hit it as the light turned green. We were at about 70 or 80 mph when a lady in a Ford Excursion turned out in front of us, thinking we weren't going that fast(speed limit was 40)

I swerved and went into the middle double yellow and he went up onto the sidewalk. Luckily nobody was there and I had no damage done to my car. I drove back to see if he was ok, and he popped all 4 tires and ripped his oil pan off dumping oil all over the sidewalk and parking lot he was parked in.

Vow'd to never street race in the city again.

just this morning, I take a lot of back roads on my commute to avoid traffic and such, some of which are narrow gravel roads.

Im coming to the end of the gravel section and I come around a sweeping blind left hand corner. it opened up just in time to see the huge dump truck in the middle of the road. Thankfully, I was in my crosstrek and had the ground clearance to go up the embankment on the edge of the road to get around the truck, but it was one of those wide eyed encounters where I was probably going a little faster than I should have been and did not expect to see a dump truck on a road that was barely wide enough to fit it.

I have had way closer encounters, mostly with deer, occasionally cattle, lol.

Last Wednesday I had two close calls.

The first was this strung out chick randomly deciding to go the wrong way on a divided 4 lane road. There was a break and the divider and for whatever reason she just turns and starts driving at us.

About 3 miles up the road, a dbag test driving a BMW pulls out of the used car dealership right in front a dude on a bike. The guy riding the bike dumped it and starts sliding in the lane I'm in. There was a semi to my right so I just locked my brakes. The guys head was about a foot from my front bumper by the time we both stopped. Then, Mr. BMW panics and runs over the front wheel of the bike to get out of the road.

As far as stupid stuff I have done, I took my snows off a month early last year because I had a sidewall puncture. Then had to work late on the night of one of the last blizzards we had. Leaving work, I was too tired to remember I was on no-seasons and skated through a stop light at 2am with the ABS freaking out. Luckily no one was around for miles.

several years ago, i fell asleep while driving around 3am on the turnpike. i was abruptly awoken at 5am when i crashed into the median...luckily i just had to replace a fender. i thank god nobody got hurt because i lucked out for sure. i'm still perplexed as to how i drove 2 hours without any recollection and there were a lot of cars on the road when i woke up.
