Oil spraying from fill cap 2011 Wrx
Alright, I tried searching for the answer to this but couldn't really find what I was looking for. As we all know, ringlands are the things that every Subaru owner worries about, especially after mods. I'm currently at 26k miles with my Stage 2+ '11 Wrx on Torqued Performance Stage 2 map.
I went on a big trip up to NC last week with a bunch of other local scoobs for a weekend on the Tail of the Dragon. Of course we were all getting on our cars quite a bit over the trip. I just got home a little over a day ago and after pulling in from work tonight I pulled off my oil filler cap to look for smoke like I always do just to make sure I don't have any piston damage, because that's the main thing I worry about. No smoke, but I put my hand a few inches above the filler and after a few seconds my hand had oil all over it. I noticed it slowly getting little drops of oil nearby in the engine bay as well from the spray. Accessport isn't showing any signs of knock, and I'm still hitting peak boost every time on WOT, AFR seems normal as well. Has anybody had this issue in the past? If so what was the cause? I'm going to do a compression test as soon as possible, within the next few days. I've treated this car like my baby since day one. Shell 93 only, Rotella T6 every 3000 miles, do data logging often to make sure everything is running smooth. Any info or past experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time =)

Its normal. The oil system is under pressure and will naturally pulse air out if the cap is off. Small drops of oil travel with the air, which is what got all over your hand. Its normal.

Okay, that makes me feel much better. I noticed the air pulsing out before, but never oil. Honestly, wasn't sure if it was something serious or normal. Just spoke to someone who said I should check the PCV but it's most likely fine.

Some is normal. Best way to know for sure is to do a compression/leakdown test.

i wouldnt lose too much sleep over our glass pistons, and certainly wouldnt be doing the oil cap test on a regular basis. Just install a boost gauge and monitor your vacuum at idle. Normally for most it is 22-24 inhg, but with a blown piston it drops to 18ish and will also be accompanied by a rough idle.

I wouldnt go by the vacuum reading off of a boost gauge. that could just mean you have a vacuum leak....my car only pulls 20 in of vacuum at idle. maybe 24 under load after letting off the gas pedal. fwiw. everyone is so paranoid about these cars. just drive it and have some fun.

Oil blowing out of fill port while engine is on is normal. Learned by forgetting to put cap on the plug after an oil change and turning the car on. Resulted in oil all over my windshield...

You might want to fill all that oil you just lost from opening the fill cap now.....
Im just kidding! It's fine. You got oil spraying down there along with air shooting out. Of course some oil will spit out |

Just did the same test on my car and I was surprised at how much air it pushes out. I placed a dry paper towel over the cap to see how much oil it spits out. If I completely seal it, there is obviously no airflow and the towel stays dry. If I hold it about 1/2" away there is some mist that collects after 30 secs or so.

really guys? -__- this is COMPLETELY normal. air pulses out and whatever oil residue is in the fill tube it ejects.

Thanks for all the input guys. Like I said earlier, just wasn't sure if it was something to worry about or not, but I guess it's normal. Also tried checking it a few more times since then, no oil. So it must be under certain conditions.
Asharus is right, I need to keep mainting my car as well as I do and just enjoy and stop worrying all the time. I'm sure if something goes drastically wrong, I'll notice it immediately. Quote:
Not sure how many miles exactly, probably around 8k. I've been running his tune since late Nov. I had a Perrin Stage 2 map before which I liked, but there's no comparison between that map and the TP stage 2. Only 1 psi more boost, but the whole car feels different. The map feels much more refined. According to Eric at Torqued, the Perrin Realtime flash changes roughly 10-12 engine parameters while the TP Reflash changes about 45-50. I'm very pleased with his OTS map and service. Will have him do my e-tune as well. |
