Is this stock blow off-valve sound normal?
I have owned my 2012 WRX for 2 months. I have not heard any unusual sounds until now. The only modification, other than the short-throw shifter is a full SPT exhaust that was installed at the dealership. All of a sudden I'm hearing a hissing sound as the car accelerates into the higher RPM's. It even happens under normal acceleration. I took it in to the dealer and they told me that the sound is coming from the blow off valve and that it is normal. I'm thinking if that is normal, then why haven't I heard that sound since the day I bought it? Any input on this possible issue and what I should do about it? Thank you!

Sounds like what you are hearing is your waste gate. You probably wouldn't have heard it much when you were going through your break in period. Also it's (obviously) much more noticeable with the windows down, so if the weather has been better lately you might be hearing it more these days.
Your car has a bypass valve stock and its pretty hard to hear unless you have an intake. Also you would only hear I when letting off the throttle, not when accelerating. |

Hmm, interesting. I haven't driven w/ the windows down yet since its still too hot. Maybe it is the waste gate. I'm going to have to take it back to the dealer though because the sound is becoming quite annoying, especially since I had never heard it before. I'll have a tech test drive it this time.

I'm having a similar issue on a 2011 WRX sedan. The car was stock for the first 20,000 km, then I went to Cobb AP Stage 1 91 octane map. I'd been putting 94 octane in the car for about a month before. I enjoyed the map and the extra torque down low. I did some monitoring for a week before going to the Stage 1 93 octane map. As mentioned, the car is otherwise completely stock.
This morning, heading into to, I did a 2-3 full throttle acceleration on my favorite little stretch (not to redline in either gear; short-shifting) with no issues. Got to my second favorite corner and did a hard pull in 2nd, short-shifted at about 5500 rpm, then got into 3rd. I immediately heard a new noise and backed off the throttle. I did some experimenting as I got on the highway. It can best be described as "whooshing" air sound, like compressed air. It appears proportional to boost; I can cruise at 120 and not hear a thing, but give it some gas and it starts getting louder; basically, the sound of the car boosting has gotten much more noticeable. The sound is coming from the driver's side of the car. I realize this all sounds like a boost leak, and my first thought was: "Great, I blew a hose/connection loose and am now have a massive boost leak." I pulled over, popped the hood and checked. No obvious signs of anything wrong. I started the car back up and sat there for a minute or so. Car idles fine, no CEL. Hooked up the AP and did some live monitoring on the highway; full throttle in 3rd. The car feels as strong as ever and appears to be boosting fine (see attached AP). Got to 16 psi (target is 16.5). The fine knock learning of -2.45 corresponds to me mashing the throttle in 3rd and is apparently common. Any other thoughts before I return the car to the stock map? Well, here is an update. Just like the previous post, when you're cruising, you don't hear the sound. Only when you're accelerating. Took it in to the dealer and this time a tech drove the car. He said what I'm hearing is the turbo spooling up and that it's normal. That just doesn't sound right to me. I had never heard that sound before until all of a sudden one day. He said I may not have heard the sound previously because the car hadn't broken in yet. They called Subaru about it and they supposedly verified what the tech said. I'm just not buying that answer. After having a passenger get in my car and asking me what that sound is, I'm going to another dealership and getting a second opinion. Will post the outcome later....

boost leak? Most likely place would be intercooler -> throttle body. You'll probably never prove it to the dealer

Ok, well here's the update I've been waiting to post! I wasn't going CRAZY! That sound is NOT normal! I drove 75 miles to get a second opinion at the next closest dealership. I went with the service manager on a test drive, with him driving the car. The moment we pulled out he heard that whooshing sound and said,"I know exactly what that is". After a short drive we went back to the dealership. The intake tube leading to the intercooler became defective. As air rushed through the tube, the leading edge of it pulled in, developing a flanged edge. The rushing air as it passed through the tube created a "Venturi Effect", and that correlated into the sound I was hearing. The part had to be ordered. He said this happens occasionally and could not guarantee that it wont happen again but at least now I know what the problem is if it happens again. On installation, the technician showed me the tube and the flanged edge was extremely noticeable. It took about an hour to replace. Now my car sounds like the day I bought it....that clean Boxer rumble is absolutely beautiful! Hope this helps the next guy that this happens to...

Is there any chance you can post some pictures of that defect?

You don't need a new part. You need to remove the rubber end caps from both ends of the intercooler to throttle body hose. This is a common problem. Those end caps are there for alignment, but unfortunately they come loose and create leaks, even at stock boost levels. If it happened once, it's just as likely to happen again. Take an hour and remove those rubber things on BOTH ends of the hose. Then tighten it back down and it will never leak.

I failed to take a pic of the part! Sorry! :-(. However, I have the part #! The part is: OEM Intake Duct / Hose for Throttle Body #14459AA660. Xluben seems knowledgeable about this regarding cutting off the rubber edges and I may need to do that myself in the future if it happens again but for now it's under warranty and they just put in a brand new hose.

I only read the first post.....
Answer. It's the stupid stock intercooler/throttle body hose. Buy a grimick throttle body hose and some t bolts and it's fixed.. Now I'm going to read the thread and i hope this was eventually found without you needed to spend any time at other dealerships, most techs are morons so check here first before taking the car in. Hope this helped lol Edit: k, i read it. If i were you i would not trust the seal without the "caps" buy a silicone one http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B007URDQMA/ref=redir_mdp_mobile/182-6477365-5472428 Just an fyi the gimmick one is TIGHT and it makes putting the ic back on a bitch so take your time and dont get pissed. It's worth the 60 bucks Last edited by Jmhm17; 08-29-2012 at 09:53 PM. |

I think my car just developed this TONIGHT on my drive back from work. I'm going to try driving it again tomorrow morning and will probably get out of work early and go to the dealership to get this stupid thing checked out.

At best the dealer will give you a new hose, with the caps still in place. And then it will happen again. Just remove the caps, or if you have money to throw around, but a silicone hose. |

Bullcrap! They better have some good news tomorrow because they were like, "Yeah, we need to take a deeper look." I told them to take a deep look the first time I brought the car in for the first oil change at 3800 miles, and they just simply said everything was stock and was in pristine condition. Grrrrrrr. Never buying another pre-owned car FFFFFFFFFUUUUUU |

UPDATE:
I went to the dealership yesterday after they took off the turbo hose and there was a rubber piece that was torn. I'm not really sure how that happened since I've never taken anything out of the engine bay before but the dealership says it's due to someone taking off the turbo (but they also didn't find evidence of someone taking off the turbo so they couldn't deny my warranty). I think it's just poor worksmanship on Subaru's part in putting the hose. All that stuff is being covered by warranty. I didn't get to snap pics of the part because they already bagged it and was sending it back to Subaru for review but I know that with the tear, it was causing 27 psi of boost (completely stock) and then when reflashed to the factory map, it was making 29 psi. Both numbers are MUCH higher than what the stock turbo would normally make on a hot summer day (10-11 psi). The dealership replaced the part, flushed the coolant and test drove it this morning. Everything checks out and they're saying that the car is good to go |

Thanks for the update bud! I took mine to the dealer, and they flipped the diamond shaped o-ring between the BOV and the intercooler to get rid of the noise, then ordered a replacement BOV. The tech there said that the SPT intake is coming soon for the 08+'s, I'm so excited for that!

I wonder if the SPT intake is also going to need a tune like many of the other intakes....

The rubber caps can come loose even if you haven't pulled the intercooler, but I'm sure the dealer will say that is the cause. If they "repaired" it by assembling it back the way it comes from the factory, then it will probably just happen again.
