But as far as word of mouth, my buddy tracks pretty often with his car and loves the ATI Racing pulley since he can DD his car as well without stalling. IMO, I think I will just fork over the $400 just for piece of mind.

No problem with spending extra money if YOU think its worth it. You are doing what you think is right and are doing so with a broad foundation of facts to determine your result so bravo for doing things right! I wish we had more like you here.

Was reading this info the other day and found it interesting from a practice perspective. Obviously not apples to apples as it applies to an EVO, but still interesting.. the biggest concern for me is also the oil pump sitting right there on the crankshaft...

You are attempting to draw a parallel between ONE Mitsu story and thousands of Subaru owners who think otherwise...not good logic.

Not really, I appreciate all of your expertise on it and am not questioning that. What I got from this thread was the poster never had catastrophic failure, just as I haven't seen any posts of catastrophic failure. I can't help but question the possible degradation internally over time however.
I also wonder about the accuracy with SOA's letter that Subaru's don't use a harmonic dampener/balancer. I can see it not being a balancer as the engine is reported to be balanced and not in need of it, but the torsion created by the compression and power strokes isn't something that can just be balanced out. I haven't pulled the LGT's crank pulley yet as my timing belt is a few k out, but our other Subaru definitely had a rubber ring inside, if that's not a dampener what's it for? |

Let's say for the sake of argument that the pulley on a Subaru is in fact a 100% germane needed harmonic balancer and MUST be used on our cars. Please list the amount of cars that have blown motors due to aftermarket lightweight pulleys. THAT'S how you play devil's advocate!

That would be one way to do it... except the guy listed above never had an engine failure, what he saw was bearing issues at a considerable amount of power above what the typical user here is seeing, that may be a key to his equation....
Without tearing down the motors to see possible wear, how can a person know or make statements definitively either way? On top of that is different driving styles and abuse a motor may see from one driver to another, ie YMMV. |

Did you happen to notice DSport's featured hawkeye in the issue out now? I love that magazine but I'm hating on the car featured, I just don't agree with the way the build was accomplished....but all of that aside....they mention a harmonic balancer on the car and go on to explain it's purpose. On that Scoob? What gives?

Harmonic Dampers
http://www.epi-eng.com/piston_engine..._absorbers.htm - good discussion on crank dampers and absorbers
http://www.epi-eng.com/piston_engine...on_engines.htm - good description of how torque pulses cause twisting spikes in the crank as far as balance, an opposed 4 cyl, straight and flat v6 engines are perfectly balanced in rotational modes. Only the 6s are balanced with respect to firing also. This led me to think (wrong) that harmonic dampers would not be used on a 6 cyl. The article on torsional excitation of the crank explains why a 6 cyl engine need one more than an 8 cyl.. - also why a 4 cyl needs one more than an 6... We have a Subi H6 and it does have a damper pulley (has rubber ring). I think the reason why people on this forum do not report problems without having dampers is that a high performance car is not staying at steady rpms. There will be certain rpms that coincide with the pulses from the cylinder firing matching up with the natural frequency of the crankshaft, and this would be real bad if we were not quickly passing through those ranges. In aircraft, where the engines typically stay at a certain rpm, there are forbidden rpms that must not be used for cruise, even on 6 cyl engines... I got here because a friend with a lot of aircraft experience warned me to look for a harmonic damper for the Subi H6 engine that we are turbocharging. - following pretty close a Perrin H6 build that he did a few years ago - w/stock crank and rods, low comp pistons, injector and pump upgrades, water injection, and 16 psi boost they made 440 hp at the wheels of a WRX with the H6. I will run pulleys for system accessories but I never run an after market crank pulley.. Not gonna risk it

Glad to hear you aren't going to risk the possibility of having no issues. You should follow that logic through by not driving your car at all to decrease the risk of an accident and engine failure.

I've had a GrimmSpeed pulley on my FSXT for a few months and a few thousand miles. The only qualm I have is that low-speed on/off throttle response is a little jerky with the 4eat. Otherwise - no problems.

I think I have noticed the same thing, but didn't realize it was from the pulley. I only started to notice it after I got my 18g installed, so I thought it was my tune. It has only happened to me about 3 or 4 times.

On a slightly unrelated note, what the hell is this thing and what is it for?
http://www.fluidampr.com/SUBARU.html According to the catalog, this thing weighs 6.9 lbs. That's heavier than the stock pulley, isn't it? |

I think it may be safe to agree that modifying your car in any way adds risk of failure in related parts. It's also safe to assume that since the many dd cars with said pulleys either aren't damaging the mains enough to cause failure or that the rest of the masses connected to the powertrain take care of harmonic vibrations. I'm just assuming things based on the zero reported failures on high mileage dd cars. The drag evo example is out of context as the engines did not run long at all, are inline, showed signs of wear either way, and are known to have crankwalk issues. The machinist I go to swears by the evo as a source of income in engine rebuilds, so much so that he bought his son an STi as a college graduation gift (he's probably fixing a ringland on the thing by now though :P).

RPP OE Drive Billet Crank Pulley, OBX-R 15% CNC 2014 Aluminum Underdriven Power Steering Pulley, UR 6061 Aluminum OE Drive Alternator Pulley, Gates "Racing Blue" Belts.
If it's humid the alt belt squeals, and it took two tries to get the PS pump to accept an alloy pulley, but now that it is done, with an ACT clutch and flywheel, it revs like a champ... Glad I read this stuff! Worth the effort for a more economically fast and fun car. |

I have a tweaked 2004 EJ257 and wanted to know the tech specs on the engine. the factory service book is kinda lame. i have looked everywhere to find the size of the stock crank pulley and have had no luck. i need to know stock size to compute the ratio with my Vortech V-5 F trim supercharger. does anyone know of a place where i can get all the tech garb on this engine?... thanks in advance for your help

You have two sources....factory service manual or measure the actual part. That's it. No and then.

Hey guys, I have a 2010 2.5 NA, looking for more power. I was looking into a lightened pulley, but I wasn't sure if it would be worth it. I know that I would need a special tool to get it off and on. Anyone else use the tool and any problems/noticeable gains? Thanks guys.
