Default Help! Need new turbo ASAP

Is anyone local selling a WRX turbo? Stock TD04, VF30, or VF24. My turbo let go at the track today, and I need to drive 1100 miles next week. I'm looking for a low-milage used unit.

Thanks,

Berndt

Where are you at? I have one that has been sitting around and only has 3k miles on it.

Default turbo newbie question

Good luck replacing it. Sounds like you got a good lead.

What is the expected lifetime of the stock unit? How do I know its going "bad"?

Mine has always been loud after I put in the TXS downpipe (flutters pretty good at 0psi; wastegate I'm told). It has gotten louder and I wonder if the rise in noise is normal or if wear is starting to take its toll. I'm not boosting much higher than stock (~15.5 PSI via UTEC) but I do drive enthusiastically most of the time and autox about twice a month. Can I do anything to extend the life of my turbo (already running mobil 1 at every 3K)? Lightening up on the far right pedal is not an option.

Well, I have 53,000 miles on the car now. The car has been running stock boost control the entire time except for a couple weeks last summer when I was playing with an EBC. However, the car see a lot of track time. I would guess I'm up near 2000 track miles. To be honest, I'm not at all surprised that the turbo went so soon. Luckily the car still runs, it just won't hold boost.

Ray, I wouldn't expect to get 100,000 miles out of your turbo. It is operating out of it's peak efficiency, so it's working pretty hard when you have the pedal down. Auto-x probably won't hurt it at all since the runs are so short. Heat doesn't get a chance to build up. So, all in all, your turbo is probably doing pretty well, and I would expect 70,000+ miles.

Holding boost. I'll have to monitor for that. Does it loose boost immediately after it peaks or does it not boost as much?

No 100K turbo; dang
Just trying to guage if I should jump on a good deal for a used stock unit ($150 is somewhat inexpensive).

I have a VF34 for sale. $700 7K miles like new mechanicly. Needs a couple of studs pulled from the stock turbo to replace ones that elected to become bolts.

Well, thanks everyone. I ended up buying a new VF30 from Carter-Subaru. It was local, new, in-stock, and the matched the price of the OEM TD04. Jamie was quite surprised at the price they agreed on. I'm happy. It goes in on Sunday.
