Default Good source for used USDM EJ25?

I've got some valve chatter (tick-tick-tick, not slap-slap-slap) and after looking at used heads to have redone (machined, ported, polished) it's going to be about the same as another engine. And I would have done nothing for the bottom end. So ...

Where is a place to get a complete, used EJ25? I'm probably going to do the rebuild myself for cost-saving and experience.

Thanks.
(1998 Forester L, 197k on the odometer BTW)

probably just due for a valve adjustment, no?

easy DIY if you have a SOHC engine:
https://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=30325

more involved if you have the DOHC engine.

1998 is likely a DOHC, so, shims. You can check easy enough engine in the vehicle. Just get the valve covers off.

As to a used engine, they're all really old by now. Either high miles, or have been sitting a long time.

1998 Forester is the one-year-only (on the Forester and Impreza RS) DOHC EJ25D.
Used engines:
- Craigs
- car-part.com
- ebait
- local yards

Buying a used 2.5 is not (even remotely) recommended as you'll likely buy another dud. And you'll want to do the HG on it even if 'low mileage' unless they've been done (w/receipts).

Do some research on buying the better Phase 2 '99+ EJ251 or Ej253 shortblock, JDM engine (same issue w/the Ej25D though), or going my suggested route (edit):
- Swap in a '95-'98 EJ22e from a Legacy L/Brighton or Impreza L/Brighton/OB....just like all the '96-'99 Legacy Outbacks and GTs that had their 2.5 swapped for a 2.2.

GL,
TD

Hmmmm.... I believe only the Impreza L and Legacy L had the 2.2, the outbacks had the 2.5 just like the Legacy GT, Forester and Impreza RS.

yes....to clarify:
"just like all the '96-'99 Legacy Outbacks (and GTs) have had done" :-)

And by 'all' I'm being a bit 'melodramatic' as certainly there are many that weren't swapped, but had the HG fixed, 'til the rod bearings failed shortly thereafter.

Yes....there are mythical stories of the 200K+ mile original HG EJ25D, but I'm not that superstitious. :-)

FWIW the 25D in my 97 OB made it to 177k on original gaskets before the PO had it done.

currently at 210...and im certain the block's never been cracked open to do rod bearings either.

a 253 block should work too, right?
