18x9 +43, enough to have a nice little lip, and a little concavity.

The composition of the car is pretty good, but I do think it's a little close to the frame edges. The pole, fence, and parking lines are a bit distracting though However, great time of the day to shoot, since the colors are very nice I might bump up the exposure just a tiny bit, but that's nitpicking.

First off, excellent choice in wheels. The fitment is spot-on for an 05-07 STI, and I'm honestly surprised why more people don't get the XD9s in this fitment. It's just like you said...decent lip with some concave too. For someone who wants a good, rock-solid set of daily driven wheels and don't need to worry so much about wheel weight, I think these wheels are perfect. The more I see them on Subarus, the more I like them

Anyway, your compositions are great (although #4 is a little too center-weighted), but what kills them is the harshness of the sun. It's so harsh that it overexposes the side of the car facing the sun, so your camera tries to compensate by underexposing everything else. There's really not many ways around this...either wait until the sun is lower and not quite as harsh in the sky, if you shot RAW try increasing the shadow highlights, or do a double exposure (one for the bright sun, one so that it exposes all the shadows properly) and stitch them together. Other than the exposure issues, I think everything else is looking good

I don't have a tutorial on it, but it's really rather simple. Take one photo to properly expose for say the car, then take another photo to properly expose for the background. Tripod is essential of course. Then, in your favorite image editing program, copy and paste one of these on top of the other, and then use the eraser tool accordingly. That's really the simplest way to do it...you can make layer masks and stuff too, but honestly I use this basic method more than anything more complicated.

thanks

so photoshop would be a good choice lol thats pretty much my only choice other than lightroom but dont think i can do that there..

yea i knew thats how you would take the photos but wasnt really sure on the editing side of it.. so i would pretty much drag the images i want on the photo then erase all the extra crap? how hard is it to line up everything good?

You really shouldn't have to worrying about lining up anything, because if you used a tripod, everything about the photo should be exactly the same except for the exposure. Thus, when you copy the image and paste it on the other exposure, it should already be lined up perfectly.

Don't underestimate what you can do in Lightroom though...it's very powerful. Make use of all of the different sliders (especially exposure, fill light, recovery, and shadows) and often times you don't even need to do a double exposure, provided your camera can capture that much dynamic range of course.

I've only had my D300 for a couple months I'll be using my D200 in conjunction with my D300 tomorrow for a wedding...so I think you'll be just fine.

Does the huge black spot under the rear spoiler bother you? I think it's fine, but some have said otherwise. I shot this into the sun in order to capture the sunset, so I don't see any way I could have corrected for the darkness. I could have used a single strobe on it (if I were a strobist), but then it'd look fake.

Your thoughts?

Yes, it does bother me...the whole photo as a whole is very contrasty. Even just a little shadow highlights would go a long way. But then again, that's one of the challenges with shooting a black car, and why they're not as easy as grey, blue, red, or silver cars

I should point out that the lack of reflected light is exactly why you very rarely see black cars in magazine features, much less on the cover of a magazine. It just simply doesn't draw attention when a magazine is on a newsstand.

Thanks for the kind words Armin. I love the wheels and like you said I'm not sure why more people don't run them. I run a 255/35/18 tire and I really don't have any rubbing issues.

I'll try and go out there later in the evening or earlier in the morning and see what I come up with. What I want is somewhere super cool to shoot, but up here in the desert spots are kind of limited.

i like the composition and contrast against the brick wall. but IMO i think for side profile shots you want to keep the car straight. the angle throws it off a bit.

I completely agree...a side profile shot shouldn't really have an angle to it in my opinion
