No, what makes you think that? Because it blocks the radiator?
Just noticed I mentioned getting a "real" radiator, that was more in reference to one that is mounted how and where I want it. Also just the fact that its one of the few stock parts connected to the engine still. LOL

Yeah once I do anything ill post it.
Ill most likely start my search at the local street rod shop that welded up my trunk holes called Zig's. I am sure they will have a guy who does it or point me to the guy they have make them. I like to keep it as local as I can. |

Well started the New Year by pulling the engine. Found a few minor issues beyond just the small oil leak that drove me to want to pull it.
So far: Chips on turbo inlet impeller Clearance issue on one intercooler pipe (first one out of the turbo) Torn air filter Other than those I mostly just want to re-do some of the hose routing to improve it. I will post pictures tomorrow. |

Fix it. Just might keep the car down a bit longer now, I need to figure out what I'm willing/able to spend on it this winter. I did not plan on needing to fix more than a valve cover seal and front crank seal. Ill get it all fixed but I spend my "play" money on the fuel upgrade I mentioned I was adding.

Too late, already picked it up. I was going to install it when I had the engine out. Just holding off on the details of that until its in, working, and I have some results from it sense it is a new product.

I have looked into if the damage to my inlet wheel will cause further damage to the turbo/engine and it appears as far a Garrets turbo is concerned this type of damage is nothing to get too worried about.
The "solution" will be to replace the filter and protect or move it at the same time. I also was provided with examples of cars that have had a Garret with much more chipping/dings in the same way and in those situations it never became an issue. So my game plan will be to leave that alone for now and focus on the oil leak/fuel system to keep life as far as this car is concerned simple. I figure when I do mess with this turbo I will go v-band so will end up digging into a much much larger project because of that and do not currently have the funds after my recent car purchase. So stay tuned for some uninteresting projects in the mean time. LOL |

Well I have been ignoring my car for a bit with the Portland Boat show and Sportsmen shows both over I will actually not be working 60-80 hour weeks. I removed my battery tray to make room for the surge tank, just plan to toss primer on the unpainted areas until my next winter project in what I hope is 2 years if this all holds up well.
Honestly have put in 10x the effort/time into my garage the last month than my car but its worth it to be organized. |

So I have some progress on the car, new tools, and built a new work bench. So mostly been getting things set-up to not need to go use my dads shop every time I feel like doing something to my car.
Here Is my motor home safe from getting the oil leaks taken care of, when they pulled my timing a idler pulley was falling apart so had to switch those out as well. I will need to get over my fear of timing these interference engines sooner than later to avoid all the waiting involved in taking it places. You can also see my new engine hoist I just picked up (that's its box still on the floor). 2014030695100835 by Scuby04STi, on Flickr This is the new bench set-up I have been building, only thing left to do is add the trim around the edges and drop on the finishing board I plan to top it with. I just tossed a quick coat of paint over where I removed the spot welds, I will worry about how it looks later for now I just need function. I will get more into this topic after the re-tune, hope to get the engine in and buttoned up this Sunday if I have time. Welp, first time not using a real garage wasn't too bad got it in myself with no issues. I stopped after I got it snugged up to the tranny and the engine mounts tightened. I am going to pick up some new jack stands so I can set the car higher to do the DP and such. I just prefer to have more room to work with, the blocks of wood I had on hand just didn't give me enough clearance to use both arms when I was under the car.
As it sat when I left it last night: 2014030995220712 by Scuby04STi, on Flickr Just need too: 1) Attach DP and WG 2) Re-do fuel lines so they come out on the front drivers corner rather than the rear so its a more direct path to the new "surge tank" I still don't know what they are even referring to this product as technically (might be the best time to lose my stock FPR and get a aftermarket one) 3) plum intake/intercooler pipes and lines 4) Wire the new fuel pump 5) Add fluids 6) Turn key and cross fingers I did not miss something 7) If all is well after #6 drop it off for the re-tune Ill do a little here and there this week seeing I typically don't have time to tinker on week days I will likely not be through the list until the end of next weekend. But who knows I might just bust it out one of these nights. |

Well I am done with most everything basically just waiting to get some help on the wiring the pump, rather get my work double checked from a buddy who does it for a day job than just assuming I did it correctly before calling it good and actually hooking it up. Also I forgot I need to trim the fog light mounts a bit more to fit my bumper a little better around the intercooler pipes/intake.
Considering my tires are basically toast I have been digging around to see what I want to run next. I have had the Toyo 888's before and really liked them, could use a stiffer side wall but I will always want a tad stiffer side wall. After looking at as many options I could think of I ordered up a set of 235/45R17 Pilot Super Sports, the "Cup" version per tire would cost roughly what a SET of the Super Sports cost so that drastically helped my decision. I have experienced both, just not on a Subaru so REALLY wanted the Cup but it just makes no sense spending more on tires than I was unwilling to spend on wheels this year. |

Finally able to wash her again so snapped a quick picture, no hood seeing I didn't happen to have a second set of hands around. Looked kind of sick, just not one to leave it that way. 2014032395160549 by Scuby04STi, on Flickr So the surge tank I have been mentioning was the FST from Perrin, here is a quick picture of it: 2013121995153856 by Scuby04STi, on Flickr As for the installation of this product it was very simple and easy. I already had my battery relocated to the rear so just drilled out the spot welds holding the tray down to get to a solid flat surface. Then painted the area just to keep it from getting corrosion on it and drilled the mounting holes in the sheet metal. The sheet metal in that area is VERY thin so I made a aluminum sandwich plate to add strength (both top and bottom of the sheet metal). Once it was mounted the lines where very simple to run, only one that matters is the feed from the surge tank needs to run to the feed line on the engine, all the rest simply connect to the pot. As for wiring I personally tapped into the fuel pump relay to get keyed power but any keyed power would have worked just fine (I just like to keep the fuel system all on once wiring system). I would be happy to expand on this, I just don't have a lot of time this week to do a solid write up and was to happy to have it running not to post. Well I got EXTREEMLY lucky yesterday.
I went to drive home after work and 3 blocks down the road I noticed the motor running oddly and I smelt fuel. I looked down at my AFR and it was all over the place, glanced at my fuel gauge and it was dropping FAST. Pulled over once I got the chance and shut it down. After popping the hood I saw were my feed connected to the "T" in the rail feed came off, I lost 1/2 a tank in under a block (adds up around 6 gal/100 yards, so at least I know my fuel system flows well). Fortunately I always have some water around and poured it all over the exhaust/engine before things got really bad aka Within 20 min I had around 6 cars at different times pull into the parking lot to offer a hand, a common statement being "if you see WRB and an open hood you just have to stop" man I love some Subaru people. I got the tools needed to reattach it, poured around 3-5 gal of soapy water on everything and rinsed that all off with a few more gal of clean water. Then drop it home without another issue. That could have been BAD!!! I think I will be double checking no other clamps are on top of the keeper lips on the connections. |
