Default Re used head bolts?

Has anyone ever had a problem re using head bolts on their ej20? I found this thread and Novacivic stated this.

fyi I work at a subaru dealer and in the past 4 years I have done probably at least 50 headgasket replacements and have never once replaced the bolts. you only need to follow the manufacturers procedures for new bolts to do the initial stretch. When reusing them I just torque them to 74 ft/lbs starting with the center bolts and going outwards in a circular pattern. To this day not one has returned with any issues.

If I follow that method should I have a problem? Thanks

Are you just replacing head gaskets, or building a motor? Either way about $100 for a set of ARP's isn't that much. Especially if building a motor.

Use the factory sequence every time you replace HG's. I think that a bolt that it meant to stretch, doesnt stretch JUST the first time, it will keep stretching until it becomes useless.

If you are truely worried about it, buy a set of oem bolts. If you think you are going to be upping your power level to something reasonably high, get the ARP studs.

I've re-used head bolts 3 and 4 times on different motors, no problems, just followed the factory sequence every time...

Hot rod Subys are not like any other motor when it comes to reliable head gasket sealing that I know of.

Alright, alright. Sorry about the price misquote. I wasn't being literal. I was trying to say that when building a motor, my opinion is not to cut corners and re-use head studs. If building, and throwing a few thousand dollars or even more, why re-use factory head studs, and spend maybe a couple hundred dollars on some ARP's, Cobbs, or Cosworth studs. Mine were cheaper as I bought the motor, gaskets, studs, timing belt, etc at the same place, and had the motor swap done there also. I would have to pull up the reciept to get the exact price. I guess to each their own. You can use whatever you want. I am just expressing an opinion about what I would have used.

-Thanks
