Dear lord, I've never seen more hand wringing. How the **** does some random dude at a conference create a harassing g workplace situation? She doesn't work with him, she is not emoyed for or by him, and a conference isn't really a workplace per say (even if you do some work there). Those columnists be high.

Oh yes I did'd'd'd
I love strong women in general, but strong black women just have a way of making you feel like a 10yr old boy that got caught looking at a playboy OTOH if you stay on their good side they will always treat you like family. I miss my old receptionist |

If she had turned around and instead said "I don't appreciate those comments" and then they kept going on, then the two holding the private conversation would be culpable. However... she didn't (according to the story), and the rest is history. She's the one that didn't take the proper action. Now of course, should there had been any action needed? IMHO, no. It was a joke between two people. Be the bigger person and ignore it, and move your seat. Attacking the two on Twitter publicly without being a grown up and talking or removing oneself should have been done before abusing her position. Not that the to having the conversation were right or wrong... but I can tell you what she did could have been handled much differently, and grownuply. --kC |

It seems people are missing a critical element. The behavior has to be repetitive and the perpetrator has to be warned in order to establish harassment.
Theres no case here, just a business afraid of someone using EEOC protected status to bully and shame people. The first employer panicked. Thats all. |

Exactly. THe offended has to ask the offender to stop 1st, or a warning to their supervisor. Her just acting like she did was 100% the wrong thing to do. Guy, girl, yellow, red, black, white, doesn't matter. She handled the situation incorrectly.

So hearing the conversation of the people sitting behind you in a crowded auditorium now counts as "evesdropping on a private conversation"?
I think not. |

Also, those bleeding-heart columnists...why do they assume the crazy comments about rape and violence come from the 'tech' world/audience? I LOVE how they assume they do, and use that to highlight the hardships women face in the tech world. IMO, and I may be way off base, it's more likely random non-techies who never would have heard the story if it weren't for her total efficiency at ewhoring the story, and just happen to be ********.

If Sendgrid was losing money because of Richards' employment, they have every right to let her go immediately. Any employee that causes a company to lose money should expect to be fired, plain and simple. |

It depends on the context, something adults are supposed to have learned to figure out by the time they are old enough to be sent off to conferences alone. Were they speaking quietly to each other, or loudly? Was she straining to hear? Was it meant for her ears in any way?

I bet the lady got fired as a 'final straw'. As in 'oh god finally a reason to can this insufferable bitch'. She sounds awful to work with, her co-workers probably hate her more than the guy she got fired.

I'm waiting to see some fallout from a situation at work last week. Older dude that's been with the company at least 20yrs sent an internal IM to a younger chick that was inappropriate. She went directly to HR. IT did a sweep of his emails and other IMs and it appears it may not have been isolated occurrence. Dude gets canned.....it could have been handled differently, but per the training we have annually, it was likely justified.
The particular group this chick works in has an unusually high number of women in it...there are four or five women in the group, all but one of them only a couple of years out of school at the most. Of course, nobody knows which particular woman was the subject of the inappropriateness. Now here's the part I'll be watching over the next couple of weeks..... I noticed late last week that most of the males that work with these women have drastically changed their behavior around them. A lot of them are avoiding any sort of contact whatsoever simply because they don't want their jobs at risk. I have a feeling these women are going to quickly become lepers and its really not their fault. I'm thinking a simple adult discussion of "hey, not cool" with the dude in the first place would have stopped it entirely. And perhaps she did that. But I see a lot of unintended consequences. I know several people have commented to me they won't be using IM anymore (people generally treat those far less informally than email). And I think its going to make the workplace a whole lot less friendly and much more sterile. |

On that topic here's her "taking my shirt off For software" campaign from 2009
