The stickers are to thank sponsors, but also for contingency money from manufacturers whose products you paid for. Simply put, if you run the stickers and place on the podium you get money. It's usually not huge, but a couple hundred bucks here and there makes a HUGE difference to a privateer or small shop.

Something a lot of people also don't understand is that to get sponsors on board with your car you almost invariably have to had spent quite a bit of your own money already. Nobody gives you free parts or a heavy discount on parts just because you think you are cool This holds true regardless if you are a shop or not. I think it does kind of suck that the NASIOC voting public seems to be a bit biased against the "shop" cars in this competition because they really don't have any substantive "advantage" over the privately owned cars.
Wow, that's two 2nd place finishes for two '08+ Imprezas that couldn't be more different!

And for decals and stickers (or in my case, magnets also), I completely understand. For me, JNA Performance has given me good deals on pretty much all of the parts I've put on my car over time, and as a result, I try to thank them in my posts, tell my friends about them, and also put their name and web-address on my car's side windows and my autocrossing magnets.

Not the best picture, but shots from the autocross this weekend aren't up yet. You get the idea. And if they were to sponsor me one day, and I'm working hard to be a good Subaru driver, a good person that people would WANT to sponsor, then I'll run bigger stickers of theirs. Yes, at the beginning it aggrivated me that there were so many shop cars, but as a wise man once told me, "Don't ask a sports fan what they thought of a loss the day after it happens. Every day between that loss provides clarity. Wait a week and you'll be golden." So looking back, it's just another way to play the game. If you don't like how they play, don't vote for them. There are plenty of self-made STis (and 1 2.5i) on here that would graciously (I especially!) accept your vote.

gee....wonder why RCE sent Kevin from IWSTI a set of springs? This happens ALL the time (I've been the beneficiary before so I'm not saying it's not kosher...but let's not pretend about it).

wrong. I know for a fact that some parts on the 'shop cars' in Round Two were donated by vendors (i.e. 100% free part). Not to mention the inherent advantages of having a shop and techs to work on them (sometimes it costs $$$ but many times not).

There's a gradation of folks....true privateers on one side, fully sponsored shop cars on the other and lots of room in between.
