![]() I did this to my EJ205 when one cam bolt gave out on me. After I welded a 1/2 nut on the head of the bolt. I was able to break it with a breaker bar by myself. I need to do it to two more of my ej’s. I’d like to start a thread for my 24 hour of lemons wrx (yes I got a wrx for the cheap) but I need 3 replies first. Can someone help me out please? Much appreciated

![]() I use this same method with suspension components on Midwest/East Coat cars. Works wonders. Great old school tip!

![]() Great to know! I Went to remove mine to replace cam seals during a t-belt change. They were wicked tight so I left them alone. Good to know this for next time! https://youtu.be/Lsqts5oISK8

![]() Another solution (not sure if mentioned) i used a 3” extension and a 17mm socket. The extension provides a place to seat my air hammer. Ram the 6 sided 17mm socket over the cam bolt. Takes a good bit of force but then it zips off with the impact. Then using the bench vice i use the air hammer to knock the cam bolt from the socket. Always works for me. I have a welder but for those who don’t this trick is great. Plus I have a very large collection of Chinese sockets I’ve collected in a drawer over the years. ***128513;

![]() Creative! BEFORE YOU USE 10mm ALLEN TOOL, guys, make sure to use SNAP-ON ONLY! The problem with the cam bolt is not the bolt itself but cheap auto parts store quality of the tool. I purchased 1/2 inch drive 10mm Allen from SNAP-ON and it works like a champ! No more problems, and I rebuild lots of EJ motors.

![]() Cheers and Happy Weekend [quote=outfrontmotorsports;34607909]***********We have seen a lot of posts regarding the removal of stuck cam bolts and methods of how to hold the cam gear in the futile attemps to remove these bolts with success. We have heard of horror stories of drilling, special bits and long times to do it, we have personally seen the results of dealerships using cut-off wheels/air chisels and the damage left behind on the gears that the dealer reinstalls. the video was not edited, the motor we have is a ej205, three of the four cam bolts came loose with an impact gun, the forth one did not. this method for us is so fast that it's not worth the time to clamp the timing belt together, nor to use the cam tool. On really tight ones with the tool, we have chipped the gears. we have also seen broken head castings due to using a wedge/prybar on the cam lobes. Often the cam bolt get really tight due to heat cycles, with the welding we do, the rapid heat applied to a stripped bolt makes them come off like butter, not damaging the cam gear at all. If you are local to us, we would perform this operation for $20 per bolt <iframe width="425" height="349" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/WjZ0XtLYtzc" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
