Subaru OEM Sub Woofer Modification 04 WRX
Hey Nasioc:
I was wondering, is it possible to take apart the small subwoofer inside the sub box under the seat and install a better woofer that's the same size?

Not worth the trouble IMO given the small size of the enclosure and limited amp power. Changing the driver isn't going to make a stellar difference in how it sounds. If you're not happy with it just buy something better.

So what other options are there that will fit in that same location? I already have an aftermarket head unit, just want a clean install that has something that comes with a built in amp and sub. Similar to the stock but obviously a lot better.

There are some aftermarket under-seat amplified subs that will fit. I don't have specifics handy but I'm sure someone will post them, you can also search in here as this has been discussed previously.

I have been looking. I think I came across maybe a Boss and a Kenwood.

Last time I checked that was pretty much all that was available. There may also be a Pioneer that is very similar to the Kenwood. The best solution IMO is the RAAM Audio underseat box but they're nearly impossible to find. I had my eye on them since I first got my car in 2007, couple years later found one for sale so I picked it up. Couldn't be happier with it paired with my old Image Dynamics IDQ10v2.

So after alot of research and looking at different models and price differences. Looks like the Kenwood KSC-SW10 is probably what I would use for my purpose of mounting it under the passenger seat where the stock one is. My only question is what do I need to get this wired correctly? Just RCA cables to my aftermarket head unit?

Linky to the product manual...
http://www.kenwoodusa.com/UserFiles/...ls/kscsw10.pdf it has a few different ways to connect it, you could just use the wires that are there from the factory unit as it supplies speaker signal power and ground, but if your looking for control from your aftermarket deck theny your best off running RCA's you will also need a 10amp supply of constant (battery) power as well as a switched 12v turn on, which you should find as a blue/white on the back of your aftermarket deck.. |

Just for clarification, I can safely remove the sub, ground, and wiring harness completely of the OEM sub as I would not need it anymore correct?

Installed..this thing is awesome! Thanks everyone! It fits snugged right under the seat, the seat slides back and forth with no problem. I used Radioshack Superlock Velcro to mount the sub

well where is the rattling coming from ... turn up the music and try to pinpoint the noise maker... use your hand to feel the suspect and put pressure to stop it from rattling... honestly all cars have their own trouble spots, so you will have to do a bit of hands on to locate your specific issue

So it turns out it was the actual sub vibrating on the actual car chassis! So what I did was I used my old WRX rear carpet and place it under the sub vertically (I have all weather floor mats now). That solved all my rattling issues I was having the sound/bass is now much more clearer. Cheers!

bump... if it sounds blown, is it easy to source a replacement speaker cone or would the money be better invested elsewhere?
