Give me all your info..NOW!!!! haha

So I'm taking the advice of a fellow NASIOC member, and starting this thread.
Since the other thread is strictly for the cool guys with Ver7+ ej207's, lol, I thought I'd give us OG ej207 guys a thread to shred!
I am currently in the process of a Ver5 STi Type-R swap. It was almost a Ver6 RA ltd, but the price was just right with the Type-R. Click HERE to Peep The Swap
Anyways, I am trying to dig up as much useful info as I possibly can on these pioneer ej207's.

-What kind of power can they handle stock?
-What mods are required to hit 300hp?
-400hp?
-Max hp you got with your builds.
-What are the weak points?
-What are the best beginning mods?

One of the main things I would love to have is the actual SPECS of the engine, are they all the same?
STi vs Type-R/RA,
Useful Part#'s ect...

Also, I would like to hear your experiences with your ver5/6 build, and hear some tips/pointers on what to do or not do when approaching a certain point in the build.
Comparisons of different brands of parts and which ones you prefer. Best websites to get certain parts, and where to find those "Hard to Find" Parts. Basically, I'm fishing for it all so that I can make the most out of this build. This is the 2nd one i've owned, and I've rebuilt a Ver6 before, but just the engine with OEM parts. I've never done a complete swap like RYAN23, AMS Mike, or DEVILTEG, and I've seen SIMER's fresh ass build with the 20g shortblock and all of his Ver5 RA parts to complete it, and there are just so many legit builds on these Forums, so it would be sweet if I could get all ur 2Cents, maybe make a Dollar. Haha stupid I know.

So here it is... Hopefully we can get some useful info together to make all of our experiences better!

EJ207

The EJ207 has an 8.0:1 compression ratio.

1998.0 9 : Impreza WRX & Impreza WRX STi 5 [Type-F] The Impreza WRX gets an improved PHASE-2 engine with brand new intake manifold and camshafts to realize improved low-end and mid-range response. It also adopts inverted strut suspension, Sports ABS(STi), and WRC car type rear spoiler(STi sedan). Horsepower 280PS/6500rpm torque 34.5Kg-m/4000rpm (WRX, WRX Type-RA) Horsepower 240PS/6000rpm torque 31.5Kg-m/4000rpm (wagon) 1998.11 : The limited edition version was introduced.

1999.09 : Impreza WRX & Impreza WRX STi-6 [ Type G ] There were some minor changes only. It is equipped with a clutch start system. Horsepower 280PS/6500rpm torque 34.5Kg-m/4000rpm (WRX & WRX Type-RA) Horsepower 240PS/6000rpm torque 31.5Kg-m/4000rpm (wagon) 1999.11 : The limited edition version was introduced.

2000.04 : The Impreza S201 STi version was released. The S201 STi features an exclusive ECU tune, large size intake duct, exclusive exhaust muffler, exclusive aero parts, RAYS alloy wheels, front helical LSD, and an adjustable suspension.

I've heard that the STi RA Cams are more aggressive compared to the regular STi. If anyone can confirm that, it would be great. I think on SIMERS build page, he said that they have a "IN 242, EX 248] [BIG intake ports] [sodium filled EX valves]"
And I know that FujiK has done a thread on the heads, FujiK's Ver6 Head Port Gallery and they definitely are the BIG PORT heads. Is this just the Ver6? Or both 5&6?

Also, does anyone know if there is a difference between the Type-R & RA? Besides Sedan & Coupe

"Version 6 STi has a Open deck block, a VF28 ball bearing turbo, Yellow top Side feed injectors, Big port heads and some very trick forged pistons. They also have the same very unreliable MAF as the Ver 5 and 99 RS." -Scoobie Steve

From NorthUrsalia.com

STi Version V
:
The Version 5 sees an upgrade on the exterior- a new front bumper is notable, with slightly larger fog lamps and new turn signals, plus the characteristic front brake vent holes. The rear spoiler becomes much larger, with a more effective airfoil design. The front grill now protrudes over the front bumper by about an inch, offering a more aggressive looking front end. All body parts (mirrors, trim strips, etc.) are color-coded to the body paintwork (on all but the Type R/RA models). A new, multifaceted headlamp design is adopted.

Notes or Special Features:

-4-sensor 4-channel ABS

-Front strut tower bar
-Carbon Fiber strut tower bar (Type R/RA)
-STi engine and intercooler
-Forged Pistons
-Competition clutch (Type R/RA)
-STi ECU (Type R/RA)
-Positive gear shift
-Inverted mono-tube strut suspension
-4-pot front brake calipers
-2-pot rear brake calipers (Type R/RA).
-Center differential with viscous LSD and rear Suretrac LSD (WRX)
-DCCD (Driver controlled center differential) and rear mechanical LSD (Type R/RA)
-Intercooler water spray (Type R/RA)
-Roof ventilator (Type R/RA)
-15:1 Power Steering (13:1 Type R/RA)

STi Version VI
The Version 6 bears little physical change from the Version 5. It gains a front lip spoiler that is color-coded to the body color, a slightly more aggressive pitch to the airfoil on the rear spoiler, and 6-spoke gold alloys that shave and extra half-pound off the weight of the previous 5 spoke wheel. The STi black/red/gray alcantara interior is retained.

The RA meant "Race Altered" and it was a Light weight WRX. It had less bells and whistles so it was more affordable.NO...foglamps, boot spoiler, underseal or radio, air conditioning, or electric windows. A majority of the sound deadening material was romoved too. RA engines prior to 1996 had a closed-deck block, after they went to semi-closed block. Doing a 99 WRX RA engine build for my 03 WRX wagon. Thanks for all the info WelDon1

Have to correct on this, "RA engines prior to 1996 had a closed-deck block, after they went to semi-closed block."

In between 1996 Ver2 and up to 2001 Ver7, all Type RA, R and STI had open deck blocks.

Not much, 350-370 bhp tops.

Remap, bigger exhaust and a good panelfilter. Might need a walbro 255lph fuelpump also.

New shortblock internals, mainly new rods and bearings. But aftermarket pistons would be a wise investment. ARP headstuds also.

Right now i've got 325-330 bhp, but it's ready to cope with 450 bhp.

The rods don't like high revs accompanied with more horsepower, makes the nuts holding the big end rattle loose and you've got rodknock.
They've got open deck block so max safe hp is about 450.

Maffless ecu, 3" exhaust, aftermarket intakehose and conefilter, larger capacity fuelpump, highpressure oilpump, NGKPFR7B sparkplugs, Organic clutch.

When swapping into an 01 rs could I just use WRX p/s pump and lines as well as throttle cable and intake hose to MAF sensor.

If it was me, i would just do a usdm WRX ecu/harness running the ver6 longblock. If looking for more strength you should up the rods and pistons. If you don't want to pay a premium for the JDM engine, a built USDM WRX 2L with gutted intake ports will work the same.

Ver5/6 are big ports whether WRX or STi. Impreza GT in Europe with an EJ205 engine runs the same big port heads. It's not STi exclusive

Too late, I'm already in this swap neck deep. I regret not going with the 205 I haven't driven my car for over 2 months. Nevertheless, I have the APEXi power FC and fmic (Arizona gets 125 degrees in summer) a 205 swap would be much less of a headache and cheaper. I let the mechanic talk me into what's "better"

I was thinking about running the 205 harness with my Ver5 Type-R.
You can get the USDM 03 harness @ WRX USA for $350. Their swaps are fairly cheap as well. I just couldn't pass up this Type-R tho. It's in so good of condition, and only One owner with 40k on it! And I got the whole car minus the rear sheet metal.

Not to rave but, after knowing about what all is out there, it brought me to by current build.

-'06 usdm WRX TR swap ecu/harness immobilizer; AVCS D25 heads
-built '91 EJ22T (Stroker currently in progress with thrust bearing conversion)
-'04 JDM DCCD 6spd

I will probably get some Ver9 heads eventually, but for now, I am going to try and build this ver5 ej207. I'm not just after maximum HP, I'm looking to be around 400whp, and I want to make it look good. I think making these engines look good is just as hard as creating HP.
So you are running a 91 ej22t with a 06 ECU/harness and heads? Wasn't the.drive by wire hard to wire in? I will probably be asking you a few Q's throughout my build. Thanx for your input! Much appreciated!

Yeah, that's another thing I have to figure out. Mounting the pedals from my clip to my shell. I'm following RYANS 00 STi Ver6 Type-R Swap instructions on the firewall swap, by drilling out the spot welds instead of cutting the whole panel out. It's so much easier, and doesn't require much welding skills.

More info Please!!!
I want Specs ect...
Can I use the USDM Bugeye ej205 head gasket on my ej207dw1pr?(Ver5)
Also does anyone know which water pump has the "Cast Turbine"? There's an ARTICLE ON EJ ENGINES in Import Tuner.com, and guys from Crawford, AMR, & Yimi share some very helpful info on building a ej motor, and one of the Mech's from Crawford talks about how certain Water Pumps with Cast Turbines flow more water than an OEM, bcuz water gets through the blades. I think its great how they talk about all the Forum Mechanics that think they know it all, and spread bad info! Awesome! I can name a few.....
Anyways, if anyone is doing a ver5/6 ej207 build, PLEASE, share your stories, including you Screw Ups, along with your helpful tips!

i know most of the gasket fits the ej207 from the ej205. I haven't tried the head gasket, ive replace valve cover, intake manifold gasket, spark plug seal, tb gasket. But i am assuming the HG work as well.. they got similar compression ratios i believe

most stuff u can use from the ej205 motor.

you can use USDM WRX EJ205 gaskets on your ver5 engine longblock.

Cast water pump wheel? '02 WRX.... We have no issues running the regular steel fin water pump revving all the way to 9000RPMs.

I purchased a full engine rebuild kit for my MY00 V6 from http://rallispec.com/ there is a PDF document that you can get part numbers for your specific year STI also Dave is very well versed in STI he can answer any of your questions.

Cast water pump wheel? '02 WRX.... We have no issues running the regular steel fin water pump revving all the way to 9000RPMs.
Yes, I'm talking about the wheel. Instead of having blades, its a solid cast turbine. Check out the Article I posted the link to. The guys from Crawford talk about it being one of their trade secrets. I think I trust the word backed by CRAWFORD haha its a great article on the +/- of the ej engine, and some very respectable tuners give their 2Cents.

Wow, I've heard ppl say it, its just hard to believe. Not saying you are lying, but if you look in the JDM parts catalog, it says that all Ver5/6 STi ej207 are forged. I would be pissed if I found out that I had Cast pistons! Did you remove the pistons themselves, or did you look at them while still installed? Thanx for sharing.
