Default I was told you could help

I was refered to this site for info on a new type of car (to me). I work on allot of cars, but I am ignorant as far as Subarus go. I just copied the thread openning over to see if you could help me out a bit more.

I just gave into the family thing with my third child being born, and traded a heavily modded 2000 Mustang for a 96 Legacy Brighton. I had the Stang on rails in the handling department, so this soft suspension has to go.

I would like to know what parts can cross from the higher end Subarus to my "grannie car" (my wife's words not mine). I would like a stiffer set of sway bars, adj. coilovers (for more height not less), better braking, and some input on rims to make the most of this AWD. I figure to raise it an inch or 2, and put some bigger tires on it. Also where can I get a CAI, UDP, and exhaust for it? Since this model is not one of the "performance" models I find it hard to find the parts for it. If perf parts from other cars work on it that would help me out a ton. I would like to acheive the stance of an Outback if possible.

Also it has no tach, or cruise, hod scoop, or fog lights. Could you give this newbie a list of what I need to put these in? I have a good source of parts cars with these options (I never thought of a tach as an option before).

I appolojize for the length of this post, and thank you for any help you all can give.

i'm too busy at the moment to get into it, but i will say..

oooohhhh the possibilities!!!!

think of it this way: brighton is the lightest most basic version of the car. read: best place to start.

well you asked a ton of Q's there.. i guess it would be easier if you break down what you want to do first? are you looking to upgrade the suspension? maybe more power? although to be honest you're never going to get much power from that car, it will NEVER feel like your stang. also what kinda cash are you looking to spend?

I'll start off with some suspension mods for you..

#1 Rear Sway Bar IPD makes a rear sway for your/our cars and its pretty cheap $180 for the bar and endlinks. that will make a huge diff becuase i dont think your brighton has a rsway at all.
#2 source a set of WRX 16" wheels and get a decent tire. you can find them for $200-$500 all the time on here.

If you really want to raise it, try finding a used outback wagon suspension. that will raise it up a few inches.. you will waste your money with coilovers and prob not be happy with the ride, and your babies prob wont like it either.

Intake = sound and very little HP gain, if any.. but it sounds cooler.

you could go the header/exhaust route.. but again money vs results are low.

If you want a hood scoop they only came on 97-99 LEgacyOutbacks/GT's so check the junkyards and boom, scoop. you can also look for a LEgacy GT front bumper if you want smaller foglights or an outback bumper if you want the 3" fogs. hope thas a place to start. but like i first said.. get some swaybars + wheels/tires and you'll already notice a huge change. then figure out how high you want your wagon.. and check the legacy FAQ's

i agree,

sway bars: i don't know if the IPD is adj, if not, get the whiteline like i have, 18mm-20mm-22mm. get endlinks too.

+1 for the wheels too.

springs: depends your resources, if you have quite a bit available, get adjustible KYB AGX and some good springs. if not too much, get some KYB GR2s and some H&Rs or eibachs, etc, search for spring stuff, there's a ton of info on here about it.

engina: you're not gonna make any power there. all i can say is swap it if you want power.

if you're good with wires and have access to an auction, you're set. get a wrecked WRX or STi and start bolting it all in. it would be wisest to get a whole wrecked car, take out the engine and tranny, ecu and wiring harness, transplant them. (it all bolts up, no ****) put the rest of what you want on, and sell the sspare parts for the going rate and you'll have a very cheap 230hp (wrx stock swap) or not too bad of an STi swap. (300hp stock)

body work: scoops: read above. lights: read above.

all in all, sways and wheels and tires. best bang for the buck of them all.

the rest is all in how much you wanna spend.

Okay, before I fly to work. I first need to stiffen this thing up some. I can't stand the body roll it has.
The options it's missing come next since I drive long distances a ton.
Infact, I go to 29 Palms (2500 miles) this fall for seven months with two trips back to Ohio while I'm there.
There is allot of desert out there that my Stang couldn't explore. So 'yote hunting from the back of this AWD is a probability.
The power could use some improvement, but this is first and foremost a family car. Nothing to severe in that respect.

well a swap isn't severe as long as you stay out of the boost

the sway will tighen it up great. shocks and springs like we said. that's the handling for ya.

there's a thread in here recently about the tach, supposedly it's all in there, but no cluster panel or needle or motor or something, so get a junkyard cluster and rup it apart.

The front bar is about the best thing you can do to tone down the body roll. I really like my whiteline one!

He wants to add height, not remove it. To get the highest, source yourself some Legacy Outback suspension for 97-99.

Is the outback a dirct swap? I took a ride in one, and the ride was allot better. Still had some lean, but not nearly as bad. A set of bars and stiffer struts would have put it right where I want to be.

Also can anyone find a link that tach story. As well as any thing on factory fog lights and cruise.

BUY a GT... its more cost/performance effective in the long run...unless your swappin in a 2.0L turbo.

hey gdcpony,

I feel your pain. Sacrificing a bit for kids, I was in your shoes, but I've had a lot of fun in my car now so I can't complain. In it's stock form, your wife is right. It is a bit of a granny car.

Unless the car has aftermarket rims, usually when I look at the drivers in Legacies, they have white hair.

If you're interested in a GT hood scoop hood, I may be able to sell you mine. I'm either looking to go after a larger 03+ STI hoodscoop or the birdcatching 04 Hoodscoop. It is probably going to be a couple months down the road though.

yep, thats a direct bolt on, find some outback struts/springs and put them on. it will raise your "L" up about 2"

Like others have said, go with outback suspension 97 and up is when they came lifted. The reason outbacks feel stiffer is they have a much larger rear sway bar. So, if you're looking to save money, find a wrecked outback and grab its rear swaybar, which if I recall is an 18mm.

Instead of a CAI or exhaust, just take the snorkus box out of the passenger side fender. Search snorkus and snorkusectomy on here and you'll find the info you need. Its just a mod that makes a fun little noise when you get deep into throttle. Definately fun coming out of a wagon.

Also, check out this post about lifting on outback suspension (I think his is a brighton or L):
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=990422

There are foglights available for your car as well, with holes in the bumper beam ready for install. You can source them on ebay for $40-60. I'm working on a way to mount my hella 500's that should be a pretty easy DIY, so check for that here in a few weeks.

correction: 96 and up Outbacks are lifted.

and yes, they have an 18mm swaybar.

You know.

I thought about this.

Did you just buy this car? Someone else just mentioned getting a GT.

The cost of trading in that brighton for a outback, 97-99 wouldn't be all that expensive of a difference I would think. Since you want a taller suspension.

First of all you would get about 30 or 40 more horsepower? I think the brighton had 122 horsepower? You could get the H6 outback (harder to find) but then you would get what, another 80-90 horsepower?

You wouldn't have to spend the few $100 to change out the suspension.

You would get the thicker 18mm rear sway bar.

Depending on the options, you might get the nice leather package, heated seats, etc.

Just a thought.

I traded the '00 Stang for this Leg and an 83 turbo coupe. Didn't want the payment with a new child. The 83 wil be ripped to pieces and most of the parts sold to pay for, well, more parts. This car is more than a family car to me. Don't tell the wife, but I plan to use it to learn about the Subarus. Having to work on it a bit will be good, and the money I spend is cheaper than a newer or better version. This will remain a work/family car, but why not have some fun with it? I have never driven a stock vehicle for long. I already scored a free hood scoop painted to match. I am well known to the salvage yards and have located 23 cars to use for sources. No Outbacks though. I routinely dropp off parts to them and am told to look and take what I need (within reason). So what parts should I pull for cruise? I have plenty of cars to look from if I know what parts from what years.
