Default SCCA Road Rally - Midsummers' Night Dream...6/22

Greetings motorsport enthusiasts,

On Friday evening, June 22nd, a time-speed-distance (TSD) rally is scheduled. This was going to be an all-nighter, yet has been modified to be "nighter" without a guarantee of twelve teams. We'll be out on the road from at least 10P-1AM...maybe longer with more teams!

The Region will be having a rally school prior to the event, so don't let the fact that you've never been on a rally stop you from coming out to try one! And remember--Getagrip has promised to pay entry fees for anyone who "beats" he and Jeffro!!

Questions about the event?

Teams I know of--
Kimi and Mitchell
Ms. Fit and Doh
Getagrip and 5650
Sawada x 2

? The Ladies
? Cose and Stogs
? Oders
? Integra and Truck

We participated in the last event, and we plan to be at this next event, and hopefully the rally in July.

It's fun, in a different sort of way. Good teamwork, paying attention (watch for tricks), and following rules seem the way to go.

The girlfriend liked it, so that's all that matters.

Default GREAT IDEA . . . yet "which" map?

Yeah, yet which map? There is a quote that is oft bantered (and butchered) around the rally group, and it goes like this--"How can you get lost between Anchorage and Homer?"

Study the "generals" the Arctic Alaska Region's rulebook, yet I caution you--don't let it overwhelm you! It looks daunting (and a few sections are), yet we'll be holding a road rally school during a week-night prior to the event. Follow the course and you'll come along checkpoints where you'll "earn" penalty points equal to the time you are early (speeding or lost and just fell-into a checkpoint) or late. Yet, it is better to be on course, so we encourage you not to worry about being on "perfect" time--just average the speeds given and you'll do fine!

Wondering what a rally is?
Like orienteering for cars. Like going from here to Gma's house...yet no one (save the Rallymaster) knows where she lives! A long road trip (we'll have the 21st running of the Mayday Mayday Road Rally in September).

What do the route instructions look like? Pretend you're at QWIK Lube on Old Seward Highway (between Tudor and Intl).

0.00 1. Depart the QWIK Lube parking lot from driveway nearest the U-Haul Rental. You will be lined up with "Mobil" on the red post. Old Seward Highway is in front of you. Depart out at the official time + your car number. Remember to zero-out your odo!
2. RT Dowling Road
2.79 3. RT 76th Avenue

Now, are YOU lost? Remember that mention of "daunting" above? The MRR (Main Road Rules) would force you to make a LT (left turn) departing QWIK Lube and they keep you going straight at Intl (and all side streets), when RI #2 directs you to make a RT (right turn on Dowling Road), know how you get to 76th from Dowling Road?

Yes, the events are held on public streets. Yes, it is exciting, challenging, and unlike a Solo event where you spend 540 minutes at an event for 5 minutes of "sex"---a rally has you on-the-clock and in the competition the entire event. Easy? Yeah. Challenging? You bet. Do "the boys" (Jake and Jeffro) always win? Not! Teams are made up of buddies, the ladies, families, parents and kids, a few husband and wife teams, and four rallies in the last year have been won by teams put-together after registration!!

If you don't have a partner (or car), chances are you can find a Driver/Navigator for the event, or perhaps ride with another team. I've been involved with rally folks since 1973. It's a great sport, and I promise you--it can (and will) take you places you've never been before!

Questions?

Mike, if we can get out of a rally alive, you can too.

Wait, Henry's your navigator?
