Default Gumball 3000 Cancelled Due To Fatal Crash

Dont know if anyone has posted this yet.

The 2007 route was scheduled to travel from London to Istanbul, via Amsterdam, Munich, Venice, Dubrovnik, and Athens. Over 100 contestants were scheduled to drive through 16 countries in 8 days. The entrance fee for the 2007 rally was GB£28,000 (US$55,060) for first-time drivers. The drivers could be tracked live in real-time from their GPS satellite navigation CoPilot Live at www.trackthegumball.com.

On April 29, at their arrival in Holland, Dutch police awaited the participants with 14 police cars and 7 unmarked cars. Seven pilots lost their driver's licence for speeding more than 50 km/h and two cars were confiscated. The Dutch government is currently looking into the possibilities for forbidding street rallies.[1]

On April 30, German police stopped about 70 cars taking part for speeding violations; they were escorted off to the airport. A police spokesman told the media that the information about the racing route had been available on the official Gumball 3000 website.[2]

On May 1, after complications with the German police, Gumball drivers were flown to Istanbul, but the Antonov planes set to bring their cars was diverted to Athens.[3] The drivers were then flown to Athens the next day, but four teams (Team Polizei, Team Turkish Taxi, Team Aytac, and Team 15) chose to drive the distance in other vehicles. [4]

On May 2, a convoy of four Gumball 3000 vehicles was involved in a traffic accident near the town of Struga, Republic of Macedonia. The Techart Porsche 911 Turbo of Nick Morley and Matthew McConville hit an oncoming car, at a reported speed of more than 200km/h, after which, according to media reports, they tried to escape the country via the nearby border post. However, they were stopped and arrested by the police, and will be held in custody until their trial has begun. The casualties reported in the accident were 67-year old driver of the other vehicle involved, a Volkswagen Golf, who died on his way to the hospital; and the second - his wife, who was seriously injured. [5] [6]

On May 3, the rally was cancelled as a sign of respect towards the casualties of the accident the day before. [7]

That kinda sucks...both the crash and the cancellation...There will never be a race like this in the states now...The Gumball was always exciting.

No it wasn't. There's nothing intriguing about it. Just a whole bunch of people speeding on public roads in fast cars. It's not truly a sporting event and it's barely controlled at all.

At least a TSD is mostly street legal(let's face it...people speed on them...but not usually dramatically, as finishing too fast can cost you anyways). This little farce was just an opportunity for some drivers who can't cut it in a real race circuit, to try and show off.

wow, that's really sad.

although, i have to comment that for an accident at a reported speed of over 200km's
i expected to see less car.. and more scrap metal
it's amazing anyone survived the head on collision at that speed.

Since I was wondering who the rich pricks were, I'll save you the search: "Nick Morley, 29, lives in Altrincham, UK with his older brother, Oliver, the managing director of a large property development company. Matt McConville, his co-driver, is the company’s property director."

Tragic on so many levels...

They hit a guy, head on, going 120mph and then walked away and tried to flee?

Either the speed is sliiiiightly exaggerated or the 911 is the safest car in the world.
