Default 02 WRX JDM EJ205 tranny swap, good idea?

So my transmission has failed (no more 1st gear) and the clutch system is getting finicky (needs new hydraulics and possible clutch replacement). The cars sitting at the shop right now waiting to get torn down to see if the first gear synchro just needs replacing, however I'm starting to wonder if just having the shop swap out the tranny would be a better option. Newer wrxs have the better RA width gears but unfortunately they're almost impossible to find these days.

But, I did find a few good deals for a JDM EJ205 transmission with low mileage. Everything I've found indicates it's a direct swap, correct? Does anyone know if all the JDM 205 trannies are the stronger, wider gears like the newer year WRXs in the states? Does this swap make sense?

Just don't wanna shell out thousands of dollars to get this all working properly and end up with a drivetrain that still has 113k miles on it if I could just shell out a few hundred extra bucks and freshen things up with something stronger, and lower mileage.

People swap in JDM 5MT transmissions all the time. The biggest factor is to make sure whatever transmission you get, to make sure you have a matching rear diff or you will tear up your "new" transmission in short order.

What he said. 02-05 USDM WRX's had a 1.1:1 Transfer gear meaning the 3.90 Final drive is actually like a 3.54 rear differential. Most JDM trannies are 1:1 and 4.11 or 4.44 so make sure you get a matching rear end. 4.11's are very common NA 2.5L 5mt rear ends, and 4.44 are common 2.5 NA auto rear ends

Default Avoid 4.44 for daily drivers

As Long as you have the matching rear diff, JDM 5speeds are plug and play. The importer I got my 4.44 from (Jspec Auto in Richmond,VA) included the matching diff and I assume most importers do the same. If you go JDM I would avoid the 4.44's for a daily driver. Cruise in any gear other than 5th and the RPM's scream. It is also incredibly difficult to drive in traffic comfortably..
