New engine time! (crap)
I just blew the engine in my 1992 Legacy Turbo (160,000-miles). How about suggestions for a good place to source a used turbo 2.2 engine replacement? I 'm shooting for a whole new long-block.
Ideas?

I think Primitive has one, possibly Teagues as well.
CCR almost certainly has them. Dave |

Rising Sun out of Cali has a Japanese imported used engine (long-block) for $895+89 shipping. While on the topic, does anyone know what other engines I can swap into this bay with minimal fuss?
Is a Japanese EJ22T going to be the same as a domestic? |

Or you can do a WRX engine swap. You already have the cross member.
This setup is still for sale. If you want the whole pop, make an offer. http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...ghlight=Engine |

www.fsautoparts.com is a very big Subaru salvage facility here in CT. I'd be willing to bet they could help you out. For the money, though, I would recommend going with a JDM engine with a bit more juice.
BTW, what exactly did you do to your current engine? I could very well be cheaper to rebuild that rather than trying to find a complete engine to swap out. Pat Olsen '97 Legacy 2.5GT sedan |

f&s auto
I just wanted to second that recomendation to f&s auto, I've heard nothing but good things about them. They're very polite which is about as rare as a dodo bird in the junkyard business, ESPECIALLY the ones in Connecticut. Not only that but they often remember you even if you haven't talked to them in a month or two, thats even rarer than a dodo bird in the junkyard business

I'm almost certain Dale Teague still has a short-block for sale. I noticed you posted wanting a long block, but just thought I would throw it out there.
You can get Dale's number from his website: www.teaguesauto.com |

We haven't pulled the engine apart as of yet--so the engine is still in the bay. Right now I'm exploring my alternatives. I have only 4-weeks to get this car back shape for the Alcan 5000 rally, so I may just drop in a JDM import-used motor for the sake of time...and keep the other one around for a rebuild...not sure yet.
Still open to more suggestions... Ryan http://www.midnightcafe.com/rally |

A new short block from the dealer is about $1200.

Time to go EJ20!
(forgive me but this is all 2nd hand from memory)
I believe the Legacy Turbo RS came with the EJ20 engine as supplied in the 1st gen WRX in all other markets outside North America. Last year, someone here in Vancouver swapped in an EJ20 after his BC EJ22 packed it in. I believe you need the wiring harness and ECU or lot's of patience to splice in your own wiring. Also, if you want to go Group N later in your rally career, there are still lot's of trick parts around for the BC Legacy/Liberty platform. Anyways, aparently there is a source stateside for good used JDM EJ20 engines (they're popular with the home built aircraft and dune buggy crowds!). I can try and get this for you if you like. Try the BC-BF Legacy List at YahooGroups http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BC-BFLegacyWorks/ You'll find lot's of help from enthusiasts down under if you choose to go this route - ask about the "Possum Link" if you want to spend money for big power through ECU mods! More info on the conversion is posted here, including scans of the Legacy/Liberty Manual for the turbo http://www.rrunracing.com/home.html Good luck, Bill |

Is the block cracked or damaged beyond rebuilding? If not find a set of newer EJ20 Heads and rebuild the block possibly boring it out .30 or .60 over. Why get rid of something if it is still workable If your setup is a complete lost cause I know of a few closed deck Legacy EJ20t's on ebay right now with or without tranny for really cheap.

Oookay, so the first shop that said it was a dead engine was wrong.
The "thunking" was apparently just some carbon buildup in a cylinder that built-up from a loosened spark plug. After I transferred the car the Smart Service in Shoreline they cleaned out what they could, and it's now running fine. I'm both pleased and annoyed at the same time... I was ready to do some serious upgrades...just as well..my clutch, on the other hand, is almost completely gone. So I just ordered a bunch of parts to upgrade it a bit: STi Pressure Plate, 6-puck disk, new t/o bearing (from Royal Moore Auto in OR) and a lightened flywheel (from Primitive Racing). |
