Default Anyone near Hanover MA? Check out this STI limited for me?

I've really been wanting to get an STI for a few years now. Had all sorts of muscle cars, but never a turbo'd nor awd car!

Really love the '07 STI limited editions. However, they are hard to come across! Located this one at Planet Subaru in Hanover, Massachusetts.

http://dealers.autouplinkusa.com/v/?...&DealerId=6270

It's exactly what I want, STI limited, WHITE, relatively low miles. However, I live in Austin, Texas and am unable to inspect or test drive the car myself (obviously). I am posting this to see if anyone local to that area who is familiar with STIs can go check out and test drive the car for me. If it's worth it, I would fly out and drive the car back or at least fly out and handle the shipping of the car back (1800+ miles) to Texas.

I have already obtained about all the info I can get from the dealer. The car was bought at auction in Florida and ended up at Planet. Planet did some restoration work (sales droid said they did a couple of things to return the car to stock such as replace a couple(?) of the interior pillars, (I would assume the car had an aftermarket gauge pod perhaps?), added wheel locks, replaced a tire. The car still has an aftermarket exhaust on it although it would be nice to know if it still has the cat (i.e. how much of the exhaust was replaced).

Due to the fact that the car has been modded and returned to stock, I need an experienced eye and driver to inspect the car. Check for obvious signs of parts that have been removed and reinstalled (missing screws, etc), things like evidence of damage to the undercarriage, and during the test drive assess the condition of the clutch, if it has any alignment problems, abnormal drivetrain noises, transmission smoothness, etc.

Wow! Quite a favor to ask, but I would be willing to do the same for a fellow gearhead if the car was in my neck of the woods

Thanks in advance!
Drew

Hey operativex, I work at Planet Subaru and I'll tell you a few things about that Limited. It came from Florida, so it doesn't have any New England weather issues like most cars that stick around up here . also, it does have a big cat back on it, atleast 3". along with that some dark tint. After saying that, I did take a look in it when it first came in and the inside looks very clean. If I had the money right now, I would buy it i'm sure once timeXlost or someone else test drives it for you they will tell you the same thing. Usually the sales people are pretty good at dealing with people far away, and im sure they can arrange to have the car shipped to you if you don't want to make your way up here to drive it back, they are very good like that

edit: I didn't know most of what I said was already on the page for the car, but oh well. If you have any other questions about the car I can try to get answers for you

I have been looking into '07 STi Limiteds for a couple of months and was suprised to find one so close me, when this arrived at the dealership a couple months ago. I recall at the time they were looking for some thing like 28k or 29k, so it looks as though it has come down in price a little.

I noticed from the pictures that it doesn't appear to have the leather door cards and also doesn't appear to have the STi Limited chin/lip spoiler, makse me think the prior owner may have parted out some of the STi Limited goodies. I didn't care for the fact it had an aftermarket exhaust and stereo either. For the (at the time) asking price of 28k or 29k I would have expected a prestine STi Limited.

That said from the pictures the car does appear to be in very good condition, and the price is reduced from what they were asking originally, so they maybe willing to work on the price. When I first contacted them they seemed very firm on the price due to the limited production.

Wow, I missed the fact about the door cards! That is very strange.

I can see bumping a curb and not replacing the front lip spoiler, but the fact that the door panels have all been replaced is rather unsettling...

I will wait for a board member's report on the test drive and go from there. Thanks so much for the info guys!!!

The fact you're willing to go this far for a car, you should wait for one that doesn't have so many missing/questionable stuff.

Pillar gauges, exhaust, missing lip, door panels. That is a lot of strikes.

Without even seeing it, I am going to say this thing has been in an accident. Do yourself a favor and keep searching.

So, I just got back from looking at this car. First off I have to give credit to planet subaru for their honesty..there are many shady subaru dealers in in area, and this place always seems to stay squeaky clean now I know why.

I checked out the car the best I could without driving it I asked to drive it, but they were a bit hesitant which I understand. A couple things popped out right away as potential problems. The car has a K&N Typhoon intake, and a HKS carbon TI catback. The cat back doesn't worry me so much as the intake, there is really no way of knowing if this car is still on the factory tune, or if the previous owner had it tuned Without either talking to the previous owner, or taking it to someone who can tune these....judging by the rest of the car, I'm leaning tward the factory tune. I looked over the engine really good for signs of parts being removed and reinstalled before getting rid of the car. The heat shields over the turbo have never been touched. The intake manifold and all Assc. hardware look like they have never been touched same goes for the factory TMIC. I asked if a compression test had been done on the engine, and they said it have not done one. I would ask for compression test results...especially seeings how this is an 07, and we all know about the 07's and their engine issues. The car sounds healthy at idle. No abnormal knocks or ticks. it dosent smoke at all. Id say the engine is pretty healthy, but you really never know with a moded used car.

The car is full, and I mean full of dynamat. This thing is covered with the stuff, the trunklid is totally covered, and you can see it sticking out the sides of the door panels. Who ever had the car must have had some crazy stereo in it. planet told me they replaced many of the interior trim, including the door panels because there were wires everywhere (again being totally honest about the car). Im also not 100% sure the door panels they put in are correct. The drivers dead pedal is also missing from the floor. Other than what I stated, the interior is very clean. The carpet shows no signs of damage. The leather on the seats is perfect and there are no scratches on the dash. Over all the interior in this car is very clean.

The paint on the car is eehh ok. The front bumper has a crease in the center where it looks like it kissed like the corner of a building or something. It has never been cut for a FMIC and as far as I can tell, the front bumper beam is still there. There are several scratches (all have been touched up) all over the car...very very typical of a subaru...the paint is a hair about nail polish at best. A couple of deeper scratches are scattered over the car as well. Biggest thing with me though....the limited lip is missing for some reason.

Its still the got the factory wheels and tires on it, I looked at them quickly and saw no damage at all. The brakes look good, and so does the front end. I looked under the car and found no leaks, however the shield that goes from the front bumper to the rear of the sub-frame is missing....and I forgot to check if the rear defuser was still there.

I know this sounds like alot, but I just want to be a detailed as i can before you potentially come out here from texas. Planet was totally honest with me about everything and answered my questions the best they could. they showed me the car fax and their repair records, the car fax is clean 1 owner vehicle, and the in service date is 1/07 Planet has done all kinds of work to this car to get it the best they possibly can, and they have all the records to prove it...and the car is still covered under factory bumper to bumper warranty.

It does seem like a reasonable price but even still I would want my v-limited lip and the correct leather door cards if it were me looking to buy this. Also, the bumper-to-bumper runs up in only a few thousand miles at this point.

I also didn't see floor mats.... lol

Honestly...if it were me..i might consider this car, though im not sure id come from texas for it. I mean..sure its got its problems, but its a limited. For 26k you are getting one of 800 ever made...and all the problems with the car are very easily corrected. the car is still under factory bumper to bumper...so if something were to go wrong you'd be covered. Another thing to consider is a subaru extended warranty. i've got one on my sti, and its worth every penny.

honestly i wouldnt touch an 07 without a compression and leakdown test. they are effing nightmares.

the fact that the lip AND door cards and exhaust sold at dealership level etc more missing means its an auction rat/repo slapped back together.

the fact they can't take the tint off which is way illegal to pass up here means they dont care. My guess is its a repo they got cheap and was worth their time reassembling it with RS/TR door cards....yup quality here.

similar cars have been sold for 22k.

If the spoiler and the door panels are the only deal breaker tell them to make installation of those items a condition of the sale on the P+S..that is if you REALLY want the car.

First of all, thanks!!! I owe you a 6-pack for going out of your way and providing such detailed info.

Man... not exactly what I was wanting to hear. While I haven't ruled this car out, I definitely wouldn't be comfortable offering the asking price (they still want 27k right now) considering all the "issues" with the car, even tho they could be considered relatively minor. I mean, I am specifically looking for a Limited, and it's unfortunate that some of the pieces that differentiate the Limiteds from the regular STIs are missing from this car. Good to know it hasn't been *totally* taken apart and rebuilt tho (at least motor-wise).

Thanks again for the report man. I've got some thinking to do on this car, and will keep looking in the meantime.

Do you think you could sum up the engine concerns on the 07's? Is there a thread I could read on the subject? I have plenty of knowledge about GM and Honda performance cars but am still learning about the suby's.

actually i cant because there are so many things wrong with them, there are 100 page threads though regarding them

basically in one note: 07s came with ****box pistons compared to other years and horrible ecu tunes. If the car wasnt tuned or the motor wasnt replaced recentlyand it was modded at one point untuned, odds are its already low compression. Bad enough I and other tuners make every 07 we service go get a compression test first and alot of local dyno operators dont even want to put 07s on because of how bad they CAN be.

if you want a solid sti get an 06.

Use common sense here - auction rat no one wanted, missing lots of weird items to be missing, slapped back together? dont be emotionally attached, just find another one they are out there.

I'm buying this car in a few days. I already gave some money and I'm picking it up this Thursday. The car looks very clean inside. This is a limited sti so i would not mind getting the lip and installing it. I don't mind the door panels eater. The car is very clean. The engine has never been dealt with. The only two modifications are the intake and the exhaust. The car is running the factory tune. When my brother installed the typhoon on his sti it felt a little bit sluggish like there was a little loss on the low end compared to my father's stock sti. When he tuned for the modifications the car gained about 10whp and everything was ok.

I always wanted an sti but could not afford it. My father didn't help my brother buy his and he had to work like hell to afford it. The same thing happened with me so i have like 3 years saving money and now i can finally afford one and this is the one i want. I know that i may be making a mistake but still this is the one i want i like everything about this car specially how it sounds. I would get it tune for the mods once i get it.

sorry for the typing and spelling mistakes English is my second language.

I'd bring it somewhere that can tune it on a dyno, that's what I'll be doing after 3" exaust install.
