One of the more frequent question I received after moving here is: "So what bridge do you take to get to RI."
BTW, the real name of the state is "Rhode Island and Providence Plantation". And Prince Edward Island is an actual island. [It's a real Canadian province too.] But Vancouver is not on Vancouver Island. -Ray |

Ok time for some more "Deep" questions?
Why do they call it the Long Island "Expressway"? Why to you park in a driveway and drive on a parkway? |

About the name: Way back when, theah was a dood that was booted owt of Massachusetts names Rogah Williams. Upon his travels, he came across an island. It was soo beautiful, it reminded him of the Isle of Rhodes in Italy. That island was given a name: Rhode Island, taking on the moniker of it's namesake. The capital of Rhode Island was: New Port. Which was simplified later to Newport. Newport RI is and was a pretty famous port and it's industry at the time was ship building. The Narragansett Bay (named after the Narragansett Indians) opened right into the ocean and other than Boston and New York, was a major point of Commerce for the North East. After sometime, the state was enlarged to what exists now and what was once Rhode Island was re-named to "Aquidneck Island." At the top of the Narragansett bay, there was a plantation called 'Providence'. Since the upper part of the bay could be easily defended against attacking vessels, the decreed Providence Plantation would be the new capital and moved from Newport to Providence. In a quick summary: The name really WAS of an Island, Rhode Island, which is now called 'Aquidneck Island". (Of which I am comfortably sitting with my butt firmly in a chair on this Island as I type.) --kC |

I have to work down there from time to time. A fellow once told me that everyone born there is sketchy or crooked in some manner. And so far no native Rhodies Ive met have proven him wrong.

Thanks KC for the corrections, and the history lesson. It was pretty late last night when I typed that.
BTW, are you sure it's named after an island in Italy? I have been on Rhodos in Greece, though. -Ray |

Rhodes (Rhodos or Rodos in greek), the beautiful island of roses, has a unique physical scenery that does not cease to impress its visitors. Also unique is its climate with more sunny days than any other place in Europe. With practically zero crime rate and friendly and hospitable people you'll be surprised how easy life in Rhodes can be. |

Sure, Aquidneck Island is pretty nice, but I'll take the one in the Aegean Sea anytime.
Oh, did you guys hear about the "sea monster" sighted in Portsmouth, RI? -Ray |

Why does the military refer to a forced run as a Fun Run? If it was so fun you wouldn't have to force them to do it.
Why is it OK to smack your dog when he's bad but you can't hit your kids for doing things that are worse? Why is it smoking is more dangerous then drinking but I only need to be 18 to smoke and give myself cancer but I need to reach 21 before I can legally drink? Why does the US still use daylight savings time. We've been saving all these hours for so many years yet have we actually seen any of these hours accounted for? Why do we refer to the US measuring system like inches and feet as being standard when the majority of the earth uses metric? Why is it even in metric societies when measuring rims they list them in standard US sizes? Why is it called the Mile High Club if there is no use of drugs involved? Why do we all vote for President on the same day if we have somebody else who casts the electorial votes for our state. Couldn't we vote at the same time since a mass voting isn't required? Why is it large corporate execs are going to jail for over inflating profits and not keeping accurate records when our own government has done many of the same things? Beans. Are they a fruit, veg, meat or really long running joke by some higher power? |
