It's not too bad here yet. High 50's during the day. I'm honestly bored of auto stuff right now. I've run out of stuff to shoot. I just walk around the yard now looking for stuff to shoot.

Other people's cars usually don't interest me too much. I spend enough time editing photos that doing some "for fun" isn't that fun. Usually I only do it if I'm documenting something I'm doing on my car.
The new body and lens might be enough of an excuse for me to get out and do something, though. And I'm getting pretty close to finishing up with my shoots/edits for the season (not much photo work in the winter in MN), so then I might have more time/motivation to take photos of my car. |

Surprise for everyone! I was having some harsh engagement into 3rd gear so I decided to replace the synchro. While I was at it I bought all new synchros and also upgraded to a straight cut 2nd gear! With my power/torque I was thought it made sense to do this to reduce thrust loads, and with only 1st and 2nd being straight cut I didn't think it would be too bad for daily driving. Here are some photos.
Input shaft (with straight cut 1st and 2nd), 2nd gear, and 3rd gear synchro cone from PAR. Gears assembled into the case. Didn't take any photos of the synchros before install. Case halves assembled. 5th gear is exposed. Ready to close it up. I don't have many miles on the new setup yet, but so far it seems great. All the shifts are nice and smooth with very good engagement. The new synchros appear to have been worth it (I originally installed it with used synchros that I got with the gears). The straight cut 2nd gear sound similar to 1st, but I don't think it's as loud. It really doesn't seem that bad. I'll have to update with more impressions once I've driven on the new setup for a bit longer. |

When I was doing the tranny work, I also put on the new mounts. The motor mounts went on first. It was a bit easier to get at them with the tranny off. Once the motor was jacked up the rear bolts were actually quite easy to access. The fronts were fairly difficult due to the Invidia header. Other headers I think would have more access. When installing these mounts pay very close attention to orientation. It took me a little bit to figure out which direction they go in.
The tranny brace was assembled, but off the car, so I bolted the new tranny mount onto it. When I went to install it I realized that one of the bolts that attaches to the tranny is impossible to install with the tranny mount assembled. I had to remove the mount, and remove the two large bolts holding it together. Then drop the small bolt into the hole and reassemble the tranny mount. Once I had done this I reassembled the tranny brace assembly and went to install it on the car. I loosely started all the bolts holding the brace to the car, but then the holes from the tranny mount didn't line up! I had to loosen all of the bolts holding the brace assembly together and then I had enough wiggle room to start all the bolts. The bolts from the tranny mount to the tranny are a pain to install. I had to use a stubby wrench for them all. It was time consuming, but it all went on fine. I torqued these down first, then the bolts holding the tranny braces together, and lastly the bolts holding the braces to the car. No issues at all once I got the tranny mount bolted to the tranny. The pitch stop was straight forward. No surprises there. Once I got the car all back together I started it up and could immediately tell the difference that the mounts made. There was a lot more noise being transmitted into the cabin and you can feel the vibrations in the floor and center console area. Getting started in first and also at low-ish RPM's around town there is a lot more vibration. There is a lot more gear/driveline noise when in gears 1-4. 5th is still quite so cruising isn't that bad. So far I think it's definitely bearable, but it's not ideal for a daily driver. I hope this extra NVH means they're doing their jobs! |

You can get rid of some of the idle vibration noise by raising the idle rpm but other than that yeah they transmit more noise but its worth it IMHO

Odd. I'm guessing it has a lot to do with the resonance frequency of the mounts. It will be different based on how stiff they are. But I could have sworn mine seemed to smooth out pretty well once it warmed up. Maybe I'll have to check again.

Perrin Mounts
Mine isn't as sold as yours so I'm not really comparing apples to apples with their directions for raising the rpm Side note: props on the pictures you always do a great job of making some things that aren't meant to look pretty that way haha. I assume that is what you do for a living? Last edited by Jdub.csu; 10-15-2012 at 01:51 PM. |

I do not do photography for a living, but my wife and I do it on weekends during the summer as a part time thing. Mostly weddings and portraits (some sports), but I have a setup at home for product photos. Thanks! It does look nice all cleaned up! |

Yeah, never did anything other than change oil or tires before this car. I've learned it all along the way. Just the other day I was reminiscing about how worried I was about doing the downpipe the first time and now it's basically just the last (and possibly easiest) step for other things (ie. tranny install). I really feel like I've learned a lot and I'm really happy I've done it.
I actually do not have the short shifter any more. The PAR gears have shorter throws and I actually liked how the stock shifter felt so I sold mine to a friend. He had the SPT kit. I believe we set the shifter to be as short of throw and overall height as possible let without bending or modifying the shifter trim. |

Ben.. Your build/details/photography and car are amazing! I have throughly enjoyed watching your car's progress from day one! BTW, I really need your transmission. I think you should hand it over...

I want to know how the hell you got to the point where you can just casually pull the transmission out and replace synchros and 3rd. Is it really that easy? Hire much time was involved in that and did you do it alone?

LOL.
Pulling the tranny only takes a couple hours. Jack stands, tranny jack, and my brother helping. I just pop the axles out of the tranny and then drop it. Getting it back in can be more of a pain. Took us around 4 hours this time, but ideally it could probably be done in 2.5 or 3 hours, maybe even less. I do not assemble the gears into the case myself. I have a local tranny builder do that for me. |
