Local Gas Quality Issues?
Some of you know that I've been having some hesitation issues (at idle), so I've had to get higher octane gas to try to solve the issue. The 89 octane worked for a while, then I guess the ECU caught up...
Well just recently I changed gas companies, I used to put Phillips 66 in the car religously. I put some Amaco 87 octane in the car and here is the kicker. The hesitation is now gone and the car feels like its got more power. Just thought I'd share. I also think I found an easy way to get rid of those "pseudo rust spots under the clear coat". I'll keep you guys updated. edit: I think I found a way to hide messages inside of these posts. [This message has been edited by Revision (edited April 05, 2001).]

I've had similar problems with certain gas stations... Speedway, Clark. So I've been using Mobil and the car runs smoother.

I've always used Shell personally...
And maybe if you'd stop going to Taco Bell at 3AM, you wouldn't have those gas problems. |

yup the bimmer is rated at 93 which is why i run either 93 or 94 depending at where i stop. it was tuned by the factory to run that octane and that is what i give it
whereas my scooby was built (err..thrown together) to run high octane gas due to the higher compression i was running. the main thing for high octane is to keep it from pre-detonating and pre-ignition from occuring. |

what were you running in the subaru? Compression i mean, and were they stock pistons and rods, did you increase bore? This is the first i hear of this, what was the story?

I use Mobil or Ammaco 93 octane all the time. I noticed not hesitation, as my engine is stock at this point, but acceleration issues with lower octane or other brands when forced to use them.

the subaru either got 93 or 94+ octane boost or 100octane from gas City
The CR was ~11:1. The stroke was the same as well as the bore on the deck The heads had work done to them, as well as some other tidbits on the internals. All i have to say is there is a MUCH cheaper and better way of getting power...called forced induction. I am a V8 guy myself so i went the old school route of building a high compression NA motor on the boxer 4 scooby. Well.. i learned to leave that to the 8 cylinders and honda's I sunk as much money into getting that pig running good as i would have spent on a reasonably good turbo kit with IC at 7lbs pretty much i had new gaskets, ported and polished the heads, did some milling, had everything pretty much torn off the heads and re-clearanced..and it still wasn't as good as i would have liked it to be life is about choices..i seem to make the wrong ones edit: oh yeah i did Jon's trick with the injectors as well..had them bored out to flow more [This message has been edited by 98mpreziveRS (edited April 05, 2001).] |

Gary will probably say TAD did the work...
I'm still trying to figure out why the various gas stations are "watering down" the gas. At least they got rid of the "oxygenated gas" requirement this year. |

nope
actually i had the gaskets made by my buddy at flatout group (they mainly do carts..but with a LOT of persuasion and the stock gasket they normally can get what you want done), the labour mainly me and a good buddy or three and the injectors a truck shop bored out (it helps when your uncle is Larry Keller who owns Keller Trucking ) As for the porting and polishing *sigh* that was done by a muscle car guy in his garage not exactly the BEST way of doing things, but hey it worked I can get you his number if you want to have some head work done for a somewhat reasonable price edit: the only thing TAD did was look at the car once or twice when i was inquiring about a STI swap that got scrapped when i sold the car then i sold the drivetrain as well the harness was installed by *shudder* Mike at Carboutique edit again: i spelled a LOT of stuff wrong [This message has been edited by 98mpreziveRS (edited April 05, 2001).] |

Gas is not unique to a company or station for the most part; your problem probably comes from wither a vendor watering down their fuel (don't know if any one company or station makes this a policy), or just a bad batch of fuel.
I personally will get gas from all but the most dubious looking stations, with Clark being the best choice in Chicago 'cause it's always less. Avoid getting gas at a station with a tanker unloading; they stir up particles in the underground tanks that have settled. I don't know of any "brand" of gas that's any better or worse at the 87 Octane level. See you all Sunday. |

Personal opinion on gas:
Get a MAJOR COMPANY gas and get 92 or 93 octane..Better performance, cleaner engine, less hesitation at idle. I Always put 92 or 93 in the car. I think it takes care of a lot of internal things in the engine. Plus you have better combustion and compression. Later. Tony. |

i could repost the link to both Tim K.'s and my big old post on Octane and such..but instead i will just shut my trap and say you will gain nothing on a bone stock motor tuned to run 89 by running 93
Anyhow i used Gas City when i had the scooby and now i just run the highest grade gas at whatever station is closest feels better paying 1/2 of what i used to |

CarBoutique huh? Well that explaines all the eye bolts going THROUGH the car into the underbody.
You should have sued them for damage to the car. |

I wouldn't be so sure about the "oxygenated fuel" requirement being dropped this year, as the news is reporting that, the closure of a big refinery, and "uncertainty in energy prices" as reasons gas has jumped 20 cents already.
In other words, they want to gouge us while the getting is good. |

I have always used Speedway if I am putting 87 in the tank. My car got the hesitation problem(hesitates at full throttle between 3-4k) after I put a tank of Mobil gas in it. The only reason I did that was because the bastards at Gerald Subaru gave me the car on fumes after it was done with service(Think they took it out joyriding?). Well the hesitation problem started immediately after putting that gas in. So now I only use Speedway if I am going to use 87 and I don't care where if the scoob is getting premium.

yeah i should have..but that is life i suppose
which is why i don't reccomend them to anybody for anything except floor mats.. they do have some cool floor mats available for pretty cheap but that is about it. Oh and the fog prices ain't THAT bad if you need them now instead of waiting and going internet or mailorder which is cheaper..but you can most of the time get it quickly through the idiots |
