correct. you could be 16, learning to drive a stick shift while being timed in a racing event. sounds crazy, but it's true

^in all honesty, when i've been to the track its not the straight beginners you have to worry about. i've never seen wrecks from people that just came to the track. its always the intermediate to intermediate adv. people.
but that is true you can come to the track be a beginner and i think the only mandatory thing is a lead follow no pass by session for almost the whole day. |

Having just gotten back from my 2nd HDPE event ever, I would HIGHLY recommend that a beginner NOT going onto a track without an instructor. Two good reasons:
1) If you have not done it before, you really have no idea what you are doing, regardless how much you have read or watched on TV. At best you are going to get in some of the other, more experienced beginners' way, slowing them down. At worst you will try to do something that you can't really do unless you know what you are doing (which, see above, you don't) and mess up the track, your car, and/or yourself. 2) Without someone giving you instruction, you are not going to get better - at least not very quickly. Maybe you'll eventually figure some things out, but why take the extra time and struggle for so long when you can get an experienced driver in there with you? The improvement will come 10x as fast. I've been to two HDPE events and have progressed a ton. I should be in the intermediate group next time but I can say for sure that I will not feel comfortable driving without someone with me for at least a few more schools. The extra set of eyes comes in helpful for things like watching the corner workers, seeing things on the track that are not right in front of you, watching for faster drivers from behind. It really does take a while before you are comfortable looking at anything but what is in front of you. I've had an instructor that I liked and one that I didn't. I made much more progress with the one I did. Find one that you get along with and listen to them. |
