If Mercedes pulls out in 2021 McLaren may be the place to go.
They may get the factory engine and some Mercedes support. Just like the old days.
Maybe Lewis will go there instead of Ferrari. That's a train wreck waiting to happen.

Yeah, RIC to Ferrari doesn't seem very likely considering Charles has proven to be the next big thing. As not one of the "top dogs", Sainz is a fast, reliable and strong driver. Perhaps a tier below Ricciardo but again, with Leclerc, they won't care.

I guess it wouldn't have mattered if Vettel switched to Ferrari or not. Nothing was up for grabs in the turbo hybrid era, it's been all Merc.

The Australian will replace Carlos Sainz, whose departure for Ferrari will be confirmed in parallel, as the Spaniard replaces Sebastian Vettel.


Both drivers will come to the end of their initial two-year deals at the conclusion of the 2020 season, although McLaren had an option on Sainz for a third year.

Ricciardo came close to joining McLaren when he was considering his options while still in discussion about a contract extension with Red Bull in the summer of 2018. Ultimately he decided to go to Renault instead, while in turn Sainz left the French manufacturer to join McLaren.

Ricciardo’s move to McLaren – which gains Mercedes-Benz engines next year – opens up a seat at Renault alongside Esteban Ocon, who has a deal that runs to the end of 2021.

Fernando Alonso is understood to have indicated his interest in returning to the Enstone team for a third stint.


Speaking to Sky F1 last week Renault boss Cyril Abiteboul said he hoped to keep Ricciardo, but hinted that there were no guarantees.


“We like Daniel,” he said. “Daniel embarked on a project, that was very clear from day one, and that project is clearly incomplete, both at a team level and I guess also at Daniel’s level.

“In particular the circumstances are very strange in that the season has not even started, so we are literally just halfway into what we need to do together, and already we need to think about the future.

“I like to think we can do more together, accomplish more together, and get more results that what we’ve done so far. Clearly that’s the intention.

“Having said that, we have a strategic plan, that plan was around substantial investment for the 2021 car. It happens that it’s 2022 because the rules are delayed by a year, it doesn’t mean that we are dropping the ball on what we need to do this year and next year before 2022.

“We’d like Daniel to be part of that construction but clearly we know that we need to be focussed on what’s been missing so far from the team, and what’s been missing is not the pace of the drivers.”

Suited to Newey/Redbull cars, maybe.

He sure didn't seem to be looking forward to the season as much. Makes more sense now. Also explains last year a lot.

As much as I understand the move there's something I don't like about it. (as always)

Mercedes and Wolf are fighting over Vettel.

According to the latest reports, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff and Daimler are at crossroads over Sebastian Vettel. Allegedly, Mercedesí parent company is in favor of signing the 4 times World Champion but Wolff isnít on board. Keep in mind, these are rumors so treat them accordingly.

While Toto Wolff hasnít rejected the possibility of Vettel joining Mercedes, heís hinted at the team retaining its drivers. However, the Austrian has acknowledged Vettelís strengths and how Mercedes would benefit from Seb joining the team. Being German, Vettel would greatly help the Brackley outfit, if he joins Mercedes.


Apart from the Marketing aspect, Vettelís experience could come in handy for the German team. Yes, some would argue that Lewis Hamilton is experienced enough but the Germanís insights could help Mercedes build the ultimate machine.

Despite all the positives of Vettel signing with Mercedes, there are some very good reasons to not do the same.

All Mercedes needs to secure Championships is one strong driver and a team player who can rise to the occasion when needed. Lewis Hamilton has been the teamís star driver since the turbo-hybrid era and is showing no signs of slowing down. Mercedes can rely on the Brit to do what he does best and bring the silverware to Brackley.



With Bottas, they have a strong driver whoíll play the team game when required and support Lewis when the need arises. More importantly, Bottasí role in helping the team secure the Constructorsí Championship isnít insignificant by any means. As a result, Mercedes can stick to their current drivers and continue dominating the sport.

However, it appears the teamís parent company is pushing for Mercedes to sign Sebastian Vettel. According to Italian columnist Giuliano Duchessa, Toto Wolff is reluctant to break up the teamís current pairing. Allegedly, Hamilton is in favor of keeping Valtteri Bottas as his teammate.

F1 fans have been dreaming of Sebastian Vettel facing Lewis Hamilton in equal machinery. Hamilton against Vettel makes for great entertainment but also results in a giant headache for Mercedes.

The odds of Vettel joining the Silver Arrows are very slim, but could pressure from the higherups force Toto to rethink his decisions?

The future of Renault's F1 team could be known as early as next week, as the French car manufacturer stares into the abyss, with finance minister, Bruno Le Maire admitting the company is in "serious financial difficulty" and could "disappear".
At a time the company is said to be considering dropping a number of its models and closing several of its factories, with talk of partner Nissan shedding up to 20,000 jobs alone, mainly in Europe, the French finance minister, Bruno Le Maire has admitted that the car manufacturer is in "serious financial difficulty".
Among the factories being considered for closure is its flagship facility at Flins, north of Paris.
"Flins must not close," Le Maire told Europe 1 radio. "This is the position of the government and the state shareholder."
The French government and Nissan are the biggest shareholders in Renault, each holding a 15% stake.
The government is currently in talks to loan the manufacturer $5.4bn, which Le Maire has yet to sign off.
"We sign when we know what Renault's strategy is," he said. "We want Renault to be more productive and to produce even more of its vehicles, particularly electric, in France."
The future of the company's F1 team has been in doubt for some time. Despite being the driving force behind the introduction of the hybrid formula, which it has never mastered, winning just 12 (9.9%) of the 121 races held since it was introduced in 2014, the team, which finished 'best of the rest' in 2018, slipped to fifth last year behind McLaren.
While Red Bull and Toro Rosso previously used its engines, both subsequently switched to Honda, and while McLaren currently uses the French power units it switches to Mercedes next season, leaving Renault only supplying its own team.
In the wake of Sebastian Vettel's split with Ferrari, clearly seeing the writing on the wall, Daniel Ricciardo, who was on a two-year contract with Renault at around £20m a year, jumped ship to McLaren, replacing Carlos Sainz who is heading to Maranello.
A proposed merger with Fiat Chrysler, which would have created the world's third biggest car manufacturer, fell through last year, while the company, which was already damaged by the Carlos Ghosn scandal, has, like most manufacturers, been hit hard by the effects on sales as a result of the ongoing pandemic.
The French manufacturer is due to reveal its cost reduction plans next Friday (29th), with all the signs being that the plug will be pulled on its F1 programme.

Guess we now know why Riccardo jump ship.
